The World Is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
Jane from Kentucky
I thoroughly enjoyed Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell but I guess it's really not what you'd ordinarily think of as a "Best Book of the Year." But it really fits the bill for me. It had it all...history, humor and even a little travelogue. What the hell --- I'm nominating Assassination Vacation!

Maybe a Miracle by Brian Strause. It's so well written and provocative, and it's a promising first for a great new writer!

The World Is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

This year's best book was The Good Wife by Stewart O'Nan. What a great story! Something you think can only happen to someone else and then you realize this could happen to you. And then O'Nan makes you think, how would I react to this situation? The good wife elects to be faithful, to survive the unthinkable, to discover her strength. This is a marvelous book.

Sidney Sheldon is one of my favorite authors, and he finally wrote his autobiography, The Other Side of Me, which was excellent. It was inspiring and informative, and it gave me a lot of insight into his writing style for the intriguing and exciting novels that he has previously written. (I've read all of his novels.) For a man who is 88 years old and still writing, he is the MASTER of his game. This is a great book that covers his life's journey.

The Tender Bar was my very favorite of 2005. It's excellent; it sits alongside Angela's Ashes in my bookcase.

The best book published this year would have to be Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling. Even if the reader is not a Harry Potter fan, the magic that comes with these books is unstoppable and unmatchable. The Harry Potter books create a phenomena unlike any other, and even if the book was horrible, this would be the best book published this year simply by the number of copies sold! However, the book was not horrible. Rowling did not disappoint and, as usual, left the reader hungry for more Potter!

The best book published in 2005 was Zorro by Isabel Allende, a close second to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling.

I absolutely loved The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty and so did the other members of my book club. This is a great story of a Vietnam vet coasting through life. When his parents are killed in a car accident, he takes off across the country on his boyhood bicycle to find his sister who disappeared decades before. Beautifully written, it is a story of family devotion and a man who makes a conscious decision to take his life back.
