Here are comments from our group of Advance Readers about Alan Campbell's SCAR NIGHT.

Ann from Madison, TN

What fantasy authors do you read?
I read fantasy by Neil Gaiman, Anne McCaffrey, Jasper Fforde, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Jim Butcher, J. K. Rowling, Tananarive Due and J. R. R. Tolkien.

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
I really liked SCAR NIGHT. I was caught up in the intricate world very quickly and found the unique characters, especially the angels and the spine, to be fascinating. The lengths that the inhabitants will go to survive in the harsh reality of their existence is amazing. The setting is an essential part of the story, [as well as the] wide range of vividly drawn characters. Alan Campbell explores their motivations and emotions and pulls the reader along on a suspenseful ride to the end of the book, where the denouement does not disappoint.

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
I would definitely read another book by Alan Campbell and hope we hear more from Dill, Rachel and Carnival in a future book.

Thanks for sending the book!

Brenda from Kenosha, WI

What fantasy authors do you read?
I usually read Dean Koonz, Stephen King, Orson Scott Card, Gregory Maguire, C. S. Lewis, Poul Anderson, Piers Anthony, Ray Bradbury, Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, Anne Rice, J. K. Rowling and J. R. R. Tolkien, to name a few; I am adding Alan Campbell to my list.

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book as an advance reader. I am so sorry it took me so long to read this one. Normally, I read much faster and have more time to read, but the holidays held many changes for our family, so I just now finished reading this adventure, which will remain a part of my life fantasies.

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
WOW, definitely!!! This book held me mesmerized every minute I was not at work. I even dreamed about it, and I can hardly wait for at least a sequel to SCAR NIGHT. Actually, if Alan Campbell has any other books coming out, I would love to read them, as I believe he packs an awful lot of reality into our little craniums, [seemingly] without any effort on his part. I felt so taken away that I would compare reading this book to the only experience I had with virtual reality (at the science and industry museum in Chicago with headset, goggles and gloves on during the 5 minute walk-thru. That experience was like nothing I had ever experienced before...until I read this book and experienced it again).

Dale from Las Vegas, NV

What fantasy authors do you read?
Anne McCaffrey, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, and Stephen Donaldson are among my favorites. I also read several others and am always trying to discover new ones.

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
It was a great book. The story was imaginative and fast paced, and I enjoyed reading it.

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
After reading SCAR NIGHT, I can't wait to read its sequel or sequels. I am not sure if Mr. Campbell has written any other novels, but [if he has, I'll try to find them and give them a look]. I was not sure (or maybe it is just my memory), but I did not notice if this was his first novel or not.

Jean from Danielson, CT

What fantasy authors do you read?
I've read books by George R. R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Elizabeth Moon, Sherri Tepper, Octavia E. Butler, and others who don't come to mind right now.

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
SCAR NIGHT would have to be one of the finest fiction novels I've read in the last year. I've not been able to read the whole book yet because of the holidays and other family responsibilities. This has been one of the high points of my reading year. Because of my relatively long commute to and from work ( 3.5 hours), my usual medium of book consumption has been books on tape and CD.

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
I would definitely read other books written by Alan Campbell.

Keep up the good work! and thanks for choosing me to preview a very good book.

Nicole from Marietta, OH

What fantasy authors do you read?
J. R. R. Tolkien, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Steven Erikson, George R. R. Martin, Robin Hobb, Sarah Ash and more!

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
SCAR NIGHT starts with an intriguing prologue that continues through the first two parts with good --- although slow --- character and plot development. Some negatives are that there aren't any much-needed back stories for the settings or characters, and the author needs to trim down on ramblings that do nothing for the plot. While the world Alan Campbell creates with vivid imagery is interesting and unusual, it can be confusing to the casual fantasy reader. Part three is the best-paced [section] of the book, and starts with a bang that keeps going until the end.

Even though the book has minor faults, the author is deftly able to capture the reader's attention with fine writing and interesting characters. There are many questions left unanswered, which will make many [wish] that the sequel were here already; a fine debut that is a great start to a new (and intriguing) series!

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
Yes.

Patrick from Nepean, ON

What fantasy authors do you read?
C. J. Cherryh, Terry Brooks, Charles de Lint, Michael Moorcock and probably others I'm not thinking of.  It's difficult to remove the science fiction from the fantasy.

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
It started off with a slow pace and a rich original world. Over time, this became fast paced and the world all at once familiar. An interesting, original book.

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
Yes.

Verree from Katy, TX

What fantasy authors do you read?
Here is a partial list: Jeanne Kalogridis, Mercedes Lackey, Melanie Rawn, Lloyd Alexander, C. S. Lewis, Brian Lumley, Anne McCaffrey, Laurell K. Hamilton, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Terry Brooks, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Anne Rice, John Saul, Margaret Weis, Andre Norton, R. A. Salvatore, and many more.

What did you think of SCAR NIGHT?
Thank you for picking me to read SCAR NIGHT. I really enjoyed it and was brought in from the very beginning. The characters were wonderful and very real. The descriptions were just enough to allow you to see the city and characters brought to life in your imagination. Not all books can do that, but this city and these outlanders were very real. The book was very well written and I cannot wait for the sequel. There has to be one or more to come about these characters, and how things evolve. I hope, at some future time, Alan Campbell also writes a prequel series, much like Terry Brooks and Anne McCaffrey have done with their popular series.

Would you ever read a future book by Alan Campbell?
I will definitely read more of Alan Campbell as the books become available.

Thank you again for allowing me to be one of the 10 who were chosen, as I felt it an honor and was truly excited to be chosen.
