One day I'd like to go into a bookstore and pick up whatever title I wanted. Even
better, I'd run a shopping cart through the aisles, tossing in books willy-nilly. Maybe I
even could have a cute stock boy to follow me around, his arms loaded down with hefty
hardcover bestsellers, thick biographies, and weighty tomes about the rise and fall of
something or other. But until the day when my as yet unknown millionaire relative dies and
leaves me everything, I will be an unabashed paperback buyer. I have trained myself to
hold out until books arrive in this smaller, cheaper, more accessible form.
For my fellow softcover devotees, here are the best new and notable paperback titles for
you to read while fantasizing about the day when you will snap your fingers and your
lackeys will come running with big, pricey hardcovers.
