Ann Patchett's multi-nominated novel BEL CANTO took home the 2002 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, beating out such contenders as Jonathan Franzen's THE CORRECTIONS. Patchett tells Reuters "I'm thrilled. There were so many great books on that list. It feels much more like luck than achievement, like finding money on the sidewalk rather than coming up with a really clever patent."
BEL CANTO is presently on the longlist for the 2002 Orange Prize for Fiction; results will be announced in June. The novel was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award earlier in the year and was included on Amazon.com's "Best of 2001" list.

The PEN/Faulkner Award is a national prize which honors the best published works of fiction by American citizens in a calendar year. Affiliated with the international writers' organization PEN, this is one of the few literary awards with which writers honor their peers. It's also the nation's largest juried prize, worth $15,000.
The award is named for William Faulkner, two time winner of both the National Book Award and The Pulitzer Prize for Literature and chosen as a Nobel Laureate. Over two hundred books are read each year and judged by a panel of three American novelists.
