August 2009

Time knows no boundaries this month, as August’s Books into Movies feature highlights three films that span decades forward and back. The sweeping romance of The Time Traveler’s Wife, based on the bestselling novel by Audrey Niffenegger, traverses an entire lifetime as a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to uncontrollably jump backwards and forwards in time struggles to build a life and marriage with his soul mate.

Tempering the high dose of drama are the more lighthearted but equally moving and thought-provoking films Julie & Julia --- an uplifting comedy that parallels the lives and personal struggles of two women: legendary chef Julia Child, circa 1940s, and present-day Julie Powell, a professionally frustrated young woman who attempts to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s MASTERING THE ART OF FRENCH COOKING --- and Taking Woodstock, an Ang Lee-directed homage to one of the greatest events in pop music history and the behind-the scenes characters who helped shape the 1969 festival into the cultural icon we know today.

And releasing on DVD this month is The Soloist, a poignant and emotional film about the redemptive power of friendship, based on true events first chronicled by journalist Steve Lopez in articles for the L.A. Times.

MPAA Rating: R
Release Date: August 14th (limited)
Based on: TAKING WOODSTOCK by Elliott Tiber

Taking Woodstock, the new film from Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee, is based on the memoirs of Elliot Tiber, who inadvertently played a role in making 1969’s Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the famed happening it was.

Working as an interior designer in Greenwich Village, Elliot feels empowered by the gay rights movement. But he is also staked to the family business --- a dumpy Catskills motel called the El Monaco that is being run into the ground by his overbearing parents, Jake and Sonia Teichberg. In the summer of 1969, Elliot has to move back upstate to the El Monaco in order to help save the motel from being taken over by the bank.

Upon hearing that a planned music and arts festival has lost its permit from the neighboring town of Wallkill, NY, Elliot calls producer Michael Land at Woodstock Ventures to offer his family’s motel to the promoters and generate much-needed business. Elliot also introduces Lang to his neighbor Max Yasgur, who operates a 600-acre dairy farm down the road. Soon the Woodstock staff is moving into the El Monaco --- and half a million people are on their way to Yasgur’s farm for “3 days of Peace & Music in White Lake.”

With a little help from his friends, including theater troupe leader Devon, recently returned Vietnam veteran Billy, and cross-dressing ex-Marine Vilma --- and with a little opposition from townspeople, including Billy’s brother Dan --- Elliot finds himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life --- and popular culture --- forever.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone --- from his girlfriend Billie Frechette to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang --- later including sociopathic Baby Face Nelson and Alvin Karpis --- thrilled many, Hoover hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’s men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals --- from the infamous “Lady in Red” to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti --- were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

Sara and Brian Fitzgerald’s life with their young son and their two-year-old daughter, Kate, is forever altered when they learn that Kate has Leukemia. The parents’ only hope is to conceive another child, specifically intended to save Kate’s life. For some, such genetic engineering would raise both moral and ethical questions; for the Fitzgeralds, Sara in particular, there is no choice but to do whatever it takes to keep Kate alive. And what it takes is Anna.

Kate and Anna share a bond closer than most sisters; though Kate is older, she relies on her little sister --- in fact, her life depends on Anna.

Throughout their young lives, the sisters endure various medical procedures and hospital stays --- just another part of their close-knit family’s otherwise normal life. Sara, a loving wife and mother who left her career as an attorney to care for her daughter, is sometimes lost inside the single-minded caregiver she has become in her efforts to save Kate. Her strong, supportive husband, Brian, is often rendered powerless and passive by his wife’s strength and determination. And their only son, Jesse, drifts, at times all but forgotten as Kate and Anna take center stage.

Until Anna, now 11, says “no.” Seeking medical emancipation, she hires her own lawyer, initiating a court case that divides the family and that could leave Kate’s rapidly failing body in the hands of fate.

January 2009

This January, Bookreporter.com’s Books into Movies feature is kicking off the new year with six literary-based offerings for both the big and small screen. Running the gamut from the Elmore Leonard thriller Killshot to the family (and pet)-friendly Hotel for Dogs, these films are loaded with drama, action, suspense and entertainment, while also promising to inspire some laughs, a few tears and plenty of food for thought.

Quite heavy in the drama department are Not Easily Broken --- based on T. D. Jakes’s novel about a longtime couple whose already fragile marriage is put to the test when one of them is seriously injured in an accident --- and Defiance, a raw and poignant tale based on true events about three brothers who organize what was to become the largest armed rescue of Jews by Jews during the Holocaust.

For a more light-hearted alternative, take the kids to see Inkheart, a fantasy adventure based on Cornelia Funke’s beloved bestseller about a young girl and her father who both possess the ability to bring storybook characters to life, and the unexpected and disastrous consequences that follow an outing to a used bookstore.

For an excuse to spend a few nights in, be sure to check out “The Last Templar,” a new primetime miniseries to air on NBC starting January 25th. Adapted from Raymond Khoury’s bestseller, this historically-based thriller explores the legend behind the Templars, an order of Knights from early Christianity that, strangely enough, seems to be thriving in present-day New York City.

And lastly, new on DVD this month are the futuristic thriller Babylon A.D., the period classic Brideshead Revisited and the sci-fi fantasy family adventure City of Ember.

Dave’s dreams of major league baseball success were dashed by an injury in college, leading him to a steady but unfulfilling career as the head of a small construction firm. Clarice is basking in the glow of real estate stardom, creating a life that revolves around her rise to the top. She has become blind to Dave’s needs, the most important being his desire to become a father and start a family with her.

They face a total disruption in their lives when a car crash seriously injures Clarice, whose meddling mother, Mary, blames Dave for her daughter’s leg injuries and derailed career.

Help comes in the form of a kind-hearted physical therapist and single mom Julie Sawyer, whose son Bryson is coached by Dave and his pals Brock and Tree in Little League baseball. Though Clarice is helped by Julie’s care, she becomes concerned that her constant criticism of Dave has pushed her husband away possibly into the arms of the empathetic Julie. “The Last Templar” stars Oscar winner Mira Sorvino as Tess Chaykin, a Manhattan archaeologist who reluctantly teams up with FBI agent Sean Daley, played by Scott Foley. The pair are drawn into a fast-paced, romantic adventure as they attempt to uncover the lost secrets of the medieval Knights Templar. The miniseries also features Victor Garber as Monsignor De Angelis, high-placed Vatican envoy. Veteran thespian Omar Sharif rounds out the all-star cast. Sharif takes on the newly-created role of Konstantine, a Greek wise man who rescues Tess and Daley after they are shipwrecked and wash up on the beach at Symi.

"The Last Templar" opens in 1291 with the fall of the Latin Kingdom's reign in the Holy Land in Acre. As the burning city is taken by the Sultan's forces, a lone galley escapes out to sea, carrying Martin of Carmaux, a young knight from the historic order of the Knights Templar. Also on the galley are Martin’s mentor, Aimard of Villiers and a mysterious chest entrusted to them by the Order's dying Grand Master. But the ship never reaches its destination.

Fast forward to present-day New York City. During a gala opening night for an exhibition of Vatican treasures at the Metropolitan Museum, Tess witnesses four masked horsemen, dressed as Templar Knights, storm into the Museum, scattering Manhattan society. Tess watches in silent terror as the leader of the horsemen hones in on one particular piece --- a strange geared device that he grabs as he disappears into Central Park.

As the horsemen's dead bodies start turning up --- and the importance of the stolen device becomes more apparent --- Tess and Agent Daley are drawn into the dark, hidden history of the crusading Knights and of the last surviving Templars' fateful journey from Acre. The pair is soon propelled into a dangerous adventure that takes them into the cemeteries and sewers of Manhattan, across continents, through desolate Turkish highlands and finally to a violent storm on the Mediterranean that shipwrecks them onto a remote Greek island --- and into the very heart of an incredible Vatican secret.
