Dear Reader:

Happy 4th of July!

Writing this newsletter is the last thing I am doing before I hit my lawn chair with a book. Last weekend I read THE LOVELY BONES by Alice Sebold. It just swept me away. Sebold's use of imagery and metaphor coupled with a powerful storyline had me thinking about this book all week. I encourage you to pick up a copy.

I always am recommending books to friends. Last year I asked my friend Jimmy to recommend one back to me. I was looking for something a tad different from my usual read. He mentioned the Left Behind series. I had never heard of it, but when he mentioned some of the titles --- THE INDWELLING and THE MARK --- I knew they had been on all the bestseller lists. As I am always interested in what interests readers I picked up the first one --- and then rapidly read through the next eight in the series.

This week 2,750,000 copies of the 10th book --- THE REMNANT ---hit the bookstores, and last week the series played prominently in the cover story in Time Magazine about the Apocalypse. This week Jimmy and I interviewed Jerry B. Jenkins, the co-author of the series about its success, the controversy that often surrounds it, and why he feels that people are finding this Christian fiction so appealing right now. This interview will serve as a great introduction to any of you who have been wondering what these books are all about.

We love to read stories about authors mentoring new talent. Here is one that came across our desks recently. Rolex, the Swiss watchmaker, recently inaugurated a new philanthropic program: the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. This unique program gives five gifted young artists the opportunity to collaborate with contemporary masters. The disciplines covered are dance, literature, music, theater arts and visual arts. The mentors involved in this initiative are chosen for their artistic genius and their ability to nurture young talent. For the first cycle, the literary mentor is Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison. Her protégée is young Australian writer Julia Leigh, whose first novel has won accolades on three continents. Mentors will spend at least 30 days with their protégés during the 12-month program. Click here to read more about this program.

We are changing the prize we give away each month to one lucky newsletter subscriber. The new prize --- 5 free hardcover books! This month's selection includes Courting Trouble by Lisa Scottoline, The Dive from Clausen's Pier by Ann Packer, The Legacy by DW Buffa, The Lobster Chronicles by Linda Greenlaw and The Remnant by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. So long as you are on our newsletter mailing list, you are signed up to win.

Some of the lineup below may look a bit familiar. With the holiday, we are doing a lighter than usual update, so we are including some of last week's titles with the thought that you may not have gotten through them all. We'll be back with a full lineup on July 12th.
