Dear Reader:

I have always been a news junkie. Last weekend, like many of you, I watched the story unfolding in the mine in western Pennsylvania with rapt attention. My perspective on the miners and their characters/way of life was colored by Homer Hickam's titles on growing up in the coal mining country of West Virginia. You may have seen Homer on some of the cable news shows over the weekend sharing his optimistic thoughts about how the situation would end. It reminded me how often books can take you behind the headlines and give you a perspective you might have missed.

Early this morning I finished reading a book that just came out this week --- AMONG THE HEROES by Jere Longman. Longman is a New York Times reporter who conducted extensive interviews with the families of Flight 93 passengers about what happened that September morning between Newark and Pennsylvania. For many of us with unanswered questions about that fateful day, this title shares some new perspectives. The twists of fate that brought these people together will keep you reading. The emotions the book stirs remind us that we can never forget the horror of 9/11.

Staying with this week's news theme --- I am calling this issue of the newsletter "Ripped from the Headlines," I go to Lance Armstrong and his amazing fourth win at the Tour de France. Before I read Armstrong's book, IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BIKE, I knew nothing about the Tour. His story of courage and determination remains one of my favorite and most recommended titles, especially for people facing their own challenges.

Watching the forest fires racing across the country these past few months, I realize how little I know about how these fires are combatted. How many of you can tell me why they light a fire behind a fire to try to extinguish it? We see these snippets of information brought to us on the nightly news, but often a book is the only place to learn more details on why and how things work. I have been told that Sebastian Junger's FIRE has some excellent chapters on battling forest fires. And our Editorial Manager Ann Bruns reminds me that as so many of this summer's fires have been arson, Joseph Wambaugh's THE FIRE LOVER also could provide fascinating reading.

Cyrogenics. Till the death of Ted Williams, how much thought had you given to this? Thomas McCollum III's new novel Palmer Lake that explores cyrogenics against the backdrop of a murder mystery. Following the cryonic suspension of Williams, and the controversy surrounding his being frozen, Thomas has been inundated with requests for TV and radio shows around the country. Larry King raved about this book in his new online column, "King's Things.". You can learn more about this title at www.ThomasMcCollum.com.

I'd love to hear about books that gave you greater insight into news stories. Please share them with with at Carol@bookreporter.com.

Keeping with our summer tradition of publishing new content every other week, below please find a re-cap of last week's titles. Next week we'll be back with a full lineup including over 25 new reviews as we bring you some of the Titles We Missed in the past few months.
