| A Week to Remember... |
What an emotional week! After reading books for our 9/11 feature, I thought I was approaching the anniversary of September 11th with an intellectual eye instead of an emotional heart. I was so wrong. What a very heavy couple of days where once again I was drawn to video footage. As part of the coverage, there were many interviews with authors who I had read, and as always it was wonderful to hear writers sharing thoughts about their work.
What I enjoyed most was hearing the stories of volunteerism that came out of this tragedy. One that particularly warmed me was the one about the folks on Delta Flight 15 who donated a scholarship to the town of Gander, Newfoundland who hosted them when their plane was forced to land there. This story prompted me to donate a book to a local Read Out and Read location in the name of my friend's husband who died at the World Trade Center. Bookreporter.com has been a supporter of Reach Out And Read for about four years now. (They can be found online at ReachOutAndRead.org.). The charity gets books into the hands of needy pre-schoolers as they make well doctor visits. For many children, this may be their only first chance to own a book of their own.
This gave me an idea. Real readers know the power that books can give people. For so many it is a way out of a one-way world. If any of you know a charity worthy of receiving books, please let me know by dropping me a line at Carol@Bookreporter.com. We will then share selected charities with readers in the months to come. Keeping our focus on sharing and giving can lighten the mood in troubled times.
Many thanks to all of you who passed along your compliments about our new newsletter format --- we are glad you like it! One feature that I failed to point out last week: At the bottom of the page there is a place you can click to forward this newsletter to a friend. Instead of telling people about Bookreporter.com, just click on this link, add a quick note (if you want) and you can send this information on to a bookloving friend. We'd appreciate it if you would thumb through your address book and pass us along!
Don't forget to vote in our Poll --- "Do the author blurbs on the back of a book influence your buying decisions?" (Click on the link on the upper right to vote.) Our Question of the Week continues on this theme --- "Who are some of the authors whose blurbs on the back of a book jacket might matter to you?" Send your replies to Question@Bookreporter.com.
And now onto our week, where we have a very full lineup..

| Author Roundtable: Books That Changed After September 11th |
Something I forgot to call your attention to last week was our 9/11 Author Roundtable. Seven authors shared their stories of books that needed to be rewritten after 9/11. For some, characters had to be changed. For others, an entire plot needed to be re-thought. This was one repercussion of the terrorist attacks that I had not considered until I spoke with some authors this summer.
