Cooking With Nigella, SOUTHERN LIVING and the new Homer Hickam book

When the weather is warm, I try to cook and eat healthy. Last week I pulled Nigella Lawson's latest cookbook FOREVER SUMMER from the shelf and made four recipes --- Broiled Tuna with Wasabi Butter (the butter also was great on steaks), Butterflied Chicken with Lemon and Rosemary, Lemon Rice and Soba Noodles with Sesame Seeds. I paired them with flatbread recipes I got from the BOBBY FLAY'S BOY MEETS GRILL cookbook(which is still a favorite). Each dinner blended flavors in a new way and was a winner. This weekend I am going to try a new Nigella recipe with a cold salad of green tea noodles and cucumbers.

I have a passion for writing about the South and its culture and charms, especially when it is witty and sharp. Last weekend I read SOUTHERN LIVING by Ad Hudler, which is due out at the end of August. Some of you may remember Ad's book HOUSEHUSBAND, which came out last year. Fans will not be disappointed with this new book. In fact, I love SOUTHERN LIVING even more. Here's the plot --- three women come together, to hilarious effect, in a comedy about Southern manners. Whether you have lived in the South, visited there, or just love Southern writing, this book is worth checking out. You can read an excerpt by clicking on the link below. By the way, I know a book is good when I am telling anecdotes from it throughout the following week.

As promised, here is a look at another Fall title. This week I read THE KEEPER'S SON by Homer Hickam, who many of you know as the author of ROCKET BOYS, THE COALWOOD WAY and SKY OF STONE. My oldest son is a lighthouse aficionado (for a trip next week he has plotted out a route to visit 32 lighthouses in New England) so any title that references a lighthouse gets special attention in this house. The story takes place on the fictitious Killakeet Island located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which for generations has been the responsibility of the Thurlow family. The Thurlows consider themselves the guardians of the island and the light. But tragedy comes to the family when the wife of the keeper dies at childbirth, and two years later, the baby boy, Jacob, is mysteriously lost at sea due to an error of judgment by Josh, his older brother. After that, nothing is the same, not for the family, Killakeet, or Josh who joins the Coast Guard and is sent to the Bering Sea. I am enjoying the writing, the pacing and the plot. Will be in stores in October.

The top clickthrough in our newsletter last week was about Chick Lit, so we are plotting more about this for the weeks to come.

For now lots to share this week, so keep reading.

Have a great weekend. I spent a lovely evening last weekend swinging in my hammock reading with a light from the house pointed toward my book. Hoping to try that again this weekend.
