Celebrating The Coming of Summer

I love summer and I always seem to read more this time of year. The last few summers there have been really slim pickings on what I call "Beach Reads." This year that's not the case. We read a lot of summer books these last few months and got inspired to created a Summer Beach Bag of Books feature. But we did not stop there. We added a contest where EACH week we will spotlight a title with very cool beach bag prizes. Read on for more about all fourteen titles and how you can win our HISSY FIT Beach Bag this week. Many thanks to Shannon McKenna and Joni Rendon who worked with me on creating this sizzling summer list.

Our new Mystery Mayhem author is Laurie R. King, who many of you know well from her Mary Russell series. Her new book is LOCKED ROOMS and it will be in stores on June 21st. We have 20 advance reading copies to give away. Interested? Then send your name and mailing information to Mystery@bookreporter.com by Friday, June 3rd.

We have a video of King where, among other topics, she discusses LOCKED ROOMS, the challenge of writing the character of Sherlock Holmes and using San Francisco as a character in her books. Click here to watch.

Our latest Suspense/Thriller author is Perri O'Shaughnessy, whose new book CASE OF LIES will be in stores on June 28th. It's the latest in her series with Nina Reilly. We have 20 advanced reading copies to give away to readers who would like to preview the book and comment about it. If you are interested, please send your name and mailing address to SuspenseThriller@bookreporter.com by Friday, June 3rd. Please note: We have two contests going to this address this week. Please be sure to note CASE OF LIES in the subject line!

I am reading Steven Gaines latest book, THE SKY'S THE LIMIT: Passion and Property in Manhattan, which is about the posh real estate market in the city. I like reading books with history layered in with over-the-top insider scoop like this. His last book PHILISTINES AT THE HEDGEROW was about life in the Hamptons so I picked this one up since Gaines does this kind of a subject well. I can see myself parked in the hammock this weekend turning some pages. The weeds can wait!

Have a great week. Keep thinking summer-ish thoughts. We noticed that many major newspapers --- Wall Street Journal and USA Today, for example --- already have announced their summer lists though I seem to remember those always coming out right before Memorial Day weekend. I think we ALL are ready for summer.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Steve Berry, Author of THE THIRD SECRET

http://bookreporter.pmail.biz/pmailweb/ct?id=-96+63512902+89+1+24124

Bookreporter.com's Suspense/Thriller Author Spotlight Team (Carol Fitzgerald, Joe Hartlaub and Wiley Saichek) interviewed Steve Berry, author of THE THIRD SECRET. Berry addresses the coincidence of events surrounding the publication of his latest novel and how he hopes the public will react to the book, especially considering the recent death of Pope John Paul II and the election of a new pontiff. He describes his fascination for writing about the "greater mysteries" of world history, explains how he conducts research for his novels (which is an ongoing process), and shares with readers details about his future projects.

THE THIRD SECRET by Steve Berry (Suspense)
Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub
Explosive in both its pace and its revelations, this intricate, well-written tale is a remarkable international thriller. Bestselling author Steve Berry tackles some of the most controversial ideas of our time in a breakneck journey through the history of the Church and the future of religion.

Beach Bag Of Books: Spotlight on HISSY FIT by Mary Kay Andrews and Weekly Beach Bag Giveaway

http://bookreporter.pmail.biz/pmailweb/ct?id=-94+63512902+91+1+24124

Whether your "beach" is on sand, your backyard deck or a grassy meadow in the country, the summer months mean it's time for "beach reading." Bookreporter.com is celebrating the lazy days of summer reading with a special feature, "Bookreporter.com Beach Bag of Books."

Every week from May 20th through August 19th a different title in the Bookreporter.com Beach Bag of Books promotion will be featured with a review and author interview, as well as a  contest prize --- a beach bag stocked with that book, plus summertime essentials that tie in to its theme. Five FABULOUS beach bags will be given away each week, as well as five copies of the book to additional winners.

Our first spotlighted title is HISSY FIT by Mary Kay Andrews, a book that made us both laugh --- and decorate! Our HISSY FIT Beach Bag prize is a hot pink beach bag, complete with a cellphone holder, copies of Mary Kay Andrews books --- HISSY FIT, LITTLE BITTY LIES and SAVANNAH BLUES --- as well as a HISSY FIT go-cup, frozen margarita mix for a crowd, chocolate covered jelly beans and a copy of Southern Living magazine. We have five to give away, as well as five additional prizes of copies of HISSY FIT. To enter to win answer the question below:

What does it say on the barbecue apron that A.J., Keeley's fiance, is wearing?

You can find the answer by reading an excerpt here:

Author Talk: Martha O'Connor, Author of THE BITCH POSSE

http://bookreporter.pmail.biz/pmailweb/ct?id=-92+63512902+93+1+24124

Martha O'Connor covers a number of intense subjects in her debut novel, THE BITCH POSSE, which some are calling "anti-Chick Lit." In this interview O'Connor explains why she thinks her book is a good read for young people and offers advice to writers who are trying to get published. She talks about the ways in which she is able to identify with her protagonists, the advantage of having a spouse who's also a novelist, and her deep involvement in diabetes advocacy.

In 1972, on the day of his sentencing, renowned artist and serial killer Marsden Hexcampis shot dead in the courtroom. Members of his Mansonesque band of followers are imprisoned or simply disappear.

Fast-forward more than thirty years: A suspected prostitute is found murdered in a candlelit motel room, the first in a series of horrors suggesting Hexcamp's art remains alive and treacherous. Following a trail of beautiful --- and profoundly disturbing --- artwork, homicide detectives Carson Ryder and Harry Nautilus descend into the shocking world of the Death Collectors, people who spend vast sums to collect serial-killer memorabilia. As Ryder and Nautilus race to solve a thirty-year conspiracy, it becomes sadly evident that at the intersection of art and madness, death is beauty, tragedy a memento, and suffering suitable for framing.

When a friend is found brutally murdered in her New Orleans apartment, former homicide detective Stacy Killian has reason to believe her death is related to the cultish fantasy role-playing game White Rabbit. The game is dark, violent --- and addictive.

As a former member of the Dallas police force, Stacy was exposed to more than her share of the horrors of crime. Moving to New Orleans was her attempt to pursue a quieter life. But her friend's murder plunges her back into the role that she fled.

She finds White Rabbit is more than a game. It's more real than life and death. And anyone can die before the final moment when the game is over...and the killer takes all.

More About LOCKED ROOMS (on-sale June 21st):

After departing Bombay by ship, Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes are en route to the bustling modern city of San Francisco. There, Mary will settle some legal affairs surrounding the inheritance of her family's old estate. But the closer they get to port, the more Mary finds herself prey to troubling dreams and irrational behavior --- a point not lost on Holmes, much to Russell's annoyance.

The more questions they ask of Mary's past, the more people from that past turn out to have died violent, unexplained deaths. Now, with the aid of a hard-boiled young detective and crime writer named Hammett, Russell and Holmes find themselves embroiled in a mystery that leads them through the winding streets of Chinatown to the unspoken secrets of a parent's marriage and the tragic car "accident" that a fourteen-year-old Mary alone survived --- an accident that may not have been an accident at all. What Russell is about to discover is that even a forgotten past never dies...and it can kill again.
