Spring Break

I am headed to the Outer Banks tomorrow. I am hoping it will be sunny and 10 degrees warmer than New York, which it usually is this time of year. I was spoiled in Charlottesville last weekend where all the flowers were in full bloom. The hyacinths smelled particularly lovely.

I am looking forward to the usual routine of reading, knitting and walking on the beach. The big debate is as follows. The house we are renting is not available until Sunday, so what can we do on the drive down and still get to watch the first round of the Final Four on Saturday? (We all are pulling for Georgetown.) We each have favorites to see on the way, thus the drive down may be as much fun as the rest of the trip

As always the packing dilemma looms --- books, yarn, and oh yeah, clothes. I typically wear jeans and white t-shirts the entire time when I am gone, so I am determined not to overpack. I went, um, a little crazy in The Needle Lady, the yarn store in Charlottesville last week. Besides the four projects in progress, I now have four more ready to start. I have said in the past that I am addicted to yarn, and I truly need a 12-step program. Oh, and may I mention that my favorite yarn store on the Outer Banks, Knitting Addiction, is having a trunk show next week? I can see the car going there on auto pilot. I console myself saying this addiction is better than chocolate. I also look forward to seeing Jamie Layton, who is one of the managers at the Duck's Cottage bookstore in Duck. Jamie also teaches water aerobics three mornings a week, and I can see us chatting upcoming books with the other class members as we work out. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS - kick - THE BLOOD OF FLOWERS - jump. You get it.

Speaking of books, I am reading LITTLE PINK SLIPS, a novel by Sally Koslow, and just loving it. It's in stores in a couple of weeks. Sally was the Editor-in-Chief at McCall's, and she is just dead-on fabulous at describing the magazine world. It's more insightful than THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Reading it I felt like I was reliving my years at Conde Nast. If you love magazines, or just a wickedly smart insider read, then you want to note this one. I cannot wait to finish it. I keep sneaking time to read a few pages.

We are so excited to be featuring Cathy Lamb as our newest One to Watch author. Cathy's deliciously funny, heartfelt and moving debut is JULIA'S CHOCOLATES, which hits stores on April 24th. As I am telling the staff, we are going out of March with a Lamb. I know, how witty am I? Or do I really need a vacation? We have 10 advance copies of JULIA'S CHOCOLATES to give to readers who are interested in previewing and commenting on the book. Interested? Send your name and mailing address to OnetoWatch@bookreporter.com by April 6th.

We have advance reader comments on David Morrell's SCAVENGER. We also have announcements of  some new award winners and nominees, including the Rita Award nominees, Gumshoe Award nominees, the Thriller Award nominees and the Book Sense Book of the Year Award winners.

Our New in Paperback feature for March was just added, so if you always "wait for the paperback" your moment has arrived. Among the new titles in paperback are KILL ME by Stephen White, JUDGE & JURY by James Patterson and BLUE SHOES AND HAPPINESS, the seventh installment in Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

We also have a newly updated Books into Movies for April. The big ones are The Host and The Nanny Diaries, but book-loving moviegoers whose tastes run the gamut from independents to blockbusters to science fiction all will find some enticing picks in theaters this month.

Our Word of Mouth prize titles are I HEARD THAT SONG BEFORE by Mary Higgins Clark, WE SHALL NOT SLEEP by Anne Perry and the paperback of MOCKINGBIRD: A Portrait of Harper Lee, by Charles J. Shields. Tell us what you are reading here to be eligible to win.

I have written a blog about my adventures in Charlottesville last week. That event gets better and better every year. Next up will be Sleuthfest in Miami the third weekend in April and then the LA Book Fair the last weekend of the month. If you are headed to either, let me know.

Happy Passover to all of our Jewish readers....more next week from the Beach.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Lisa Jackson, Author of ABSOLUTE FEAR

Lisa Jackson is the bestselling author of more than 75 novels, including FATAL BURN, SHIVER, DEEP FREEZE and THE MORNING AFTER. More about JULIA'S CHOCOLATES:
From the moment Julia Bennett leaves her abusive Boston fiancé at the altar and her ugly wedding dress hanging from a tree in South Dakota, she knows she’s driving away from the old Julia, but what she’s driving toward is as messy and undefined as her own wounded soul. The old Julia dug her way out of a tortured, trailer park childhood with a monster of a mother. The new Julia will be found at her Aunt Lydia’s rambling, hundred-year-old farmhouse outside Golden, Oregon.

Filled with warmth, love, and truth, JULIA’S CHOCOLATES is an unforgettable novel of hope and healing that explores the hurts we keep deep in our hearts, the love that liberates us, the courage that defines us, and the chocolate that just might take us there.

More about THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE:
When Fiona Sweeney tells her family she wants to do something that matters, they do not expect her to go to Africa to help start a traveling library. But that is where Fiona chooses to make her mark: in the arid bush of northeastern Kenya, among tiny, far-flung communities, nearly unknown and lacking roads and schools, where people live daily with drought, hunger, and disease.
In THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE Fi travels to settlements where people have never held a book in their hands. Her goal is to help bring Dr. Seuss, Homer, Tom Sawyer, and Hemingway to a largely illiterate and semi-nomadic populace. However, because the donated books are limited in number and the settlements are many, the library initiates a tough fine: if anyone fails to return a book, the bookmobile will stop coming.

More about THE WILDE WOMEN:
The Wilde sisters dove headfirst into this world on fire with life and expectation. With hair black as midnight and eyes blazing blue, they grow into truly irresistible women. But as well as being blessed with beauty and determination, the Wilde sisters are cursed with equal tastes for mischief and bad men. And both of these appetites always lead to trouble. Love either lifts a woman up or drags her down. When a Wilde woman dies, they don't have to dig a hole.

On Black Friday in Five Points, Tennessee, Pearl Wilde finds her sister, Kat, in the barn wearing both her favorite shoes and her fiancé. As quick to fury as she is to passion, Pearl leaves town immediately. She returns five years later a sophisticated femme fatale, with her claws sharpened like stainless steel and a demeanor so cool that the townspeople can no longer tell if she even has sweat glands. Slowly and deliberately, Pearl begins her revenge on Kat by captivating all the men of Five Points, but all the while never forgetting the one man who had the power to break her heart.

In THE WILDE WOMEN, Paula Wall once again bewitches the reader with humor, sass, smarts, and sensuality, creating a hilarious and beguiling world where sometimes the best revenge is forgiveness.

More about OBSESSION:
Katharine Lawrence has no idea what hit her. The attack came out of nowhere. Only hours earlier she had been enjoying a girls-only weekend with an old college friend. Now she finds herself lying bound and gagged on her kitchen floor, staring with terrified eyes at her friend Lisa while two masked gunmen search her house for –-- what? She doesn’t know. She only knows that, unless they can escape, whatever it is could end up getting both her and Lisa killed.

But Katharine’s nightmare is only just beginning. When she awakens in a Washington hospital, her nose crushed, her body battered, her brain tells her things aren’t right –-- and it’s not the attack that’s disorienting her. She doesn’t recognize herself when she looks in the mirror: her slim body, her manicured hands, her blond bob. And the smiling, handsome doctor at her bedside –-- Dr. Dan Howard –-- is familiar, but in a totally unfamiliar way. Perhaps the trauma of the attempt on her life has given her some kind of weird amnesia. She’s twenty-nine, the special assistant to the head of the CIA, and she’s lucky to be alive. She also knows she can trust no one.

If he's chosen you to play, he's chosen you to die.....

The victims are former beauty queens found with a single rose beside their bodies. Lindsay McAllister has seen this signature before, when she was a rookie detective with the Chattanooga PD investigating the death of Judd Walker's wife, a murder that sent the handsome lawyer off the deep end. Now, Lindsay has the brutal task of telling Judd that his wife's killer has struck again, and she's going to need his help to outplay their opponent --- because the killer is getting bolder, faster, and more ruthless. The game is escalating, and no one is safe.
Now as the body count rises, the rules are changing. A killer will do anything to win. And the only way for Lindsay to stop a madman's twisted game is to play it herself...

More about GENGHIS:
He was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Temujin’s young life was shaped by a series of brutal acts: the betrayal of his father by a neighboring tribe and the abandonment of his entire family cruelly left to die on the harsh plain. But Temujin endured—and from that moment on, he was driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon.

Through a series of courageous raids against the Tartars, Temujin’s legend grew. And so did the challenges he faced --- from the machinations of a Chinese ambassador to the brutal abduction of his young wife, Borte. Blessed with ferocious courage, it was the young warrior’s ability to learn, to imagine, and to judge the hearts of others that propelled him to greater and greater power. Until Temujin was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of a thousand warhorses, to subject unknown nations and even empires to his will.
