Here Comes Summer....
|
|
Here comes one of my favorite three-day weekends. The pool here is crystal clear, the lawn chairs are out and the hammock looks inviting. I have no plans except for watching the local town parade on Monday, which the boys and I always call "a Mayberry moment." It's incredibly amateurish, but watching it I always get a lump in my throat at some point --- usually when the older veterans walk by. Knitting (making this cool shawl in a new pattern) and reading on the agenda....lots of both. Oh, and we have a new grill, which supposedly has a ton of features I "am going to love." I think that that was hype to get me all excited about Tom and the boys hitting the hardware store to buy this last weekend. I got an amazing sales pitch from them on why we "needed" this.
This week we have GREAT interviews with Barry Eisler (I told him the other day that after sharing his books with readers I now know the correct spelling of requiem and assassin for future Scrabble games) and Khaled Hosseini (who with this new book I now am calling by name instead of "THE KITE RUNNER author"). I loved both books, and they would be great long weekend reading.
Also, my son Greg's first Bookreporter.com interview runs this week, as he interviews f-stop Fitzgerald (yes, Fitzgerald interviews Fitzgerald) about his new book THE MIGHTY FALLEN. My sons and husband enjoy touring war memorials on vacation trips, so this book was one they all pored over. Greg has a great eye for photography and thus he welcomed the opportunity to talk to f-stop about this book, which gives readers a look at more than 150 war memorials. As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend and think back on our fallen soldiers, we have made this our "Don't Miss" title of the week. The photography is breathtaking, and author Larry Bond writes terrific prose to accompany the photos.
We also kick off our Father's Day Duffel Bag of Books Contest today. We have SEVEN great books and what I am calling "manly prizes." It's not too early to shop for dad. And dads, may we suggest you read our list, print it, circle your faves and leave it where your family can find it? Trust that ideas for gifts always are welcome! Way I see it, books beat socks and underwear! See details on how to win this duffel for dad below.
A couple of years ago I was invited to a book party where the author greeted me in her pajamas. Marian Keyes hosted a party in her jammies for her book UNDER THE DUVET. We had lunch and great conversation while she chatted with us. This fun memory still has me smiling as I share news that her book ANYBODY OUT THERE? is our new Summer Beach Bag of Books title this week. I had great fun shopping for this one...including tucking in some Irish tea to honor Keyes's roots. See details below.
Our new One to Watch author is Holly Peterson, whose book THE MANNY will be in stores on June 19th. It's the story of a woman who hires a male nanny to care for her son who is in need of some male attention, as her husband is too busy to have time for him. What happens? Well, you just have to read it. If you would like to be one of our 10 readers who will read the book and comment on it, please send a note to OneToWatch@bookreporter.com by Friday, June 1st.
Funny story: we had a male nanny one summer. He was great with the boys, and they all had a great time. The house was never clean, but the adventures were noteworthy. His last day the boys and I flew to Atlanta. Before we left, the "manny" packed the boys' backpacks. We hit a four-hour gate delay and I thought...at least we have things to do in the backpacks. Oh, I was so wrong. We had a stuffed bunny, crayons and a videotape. The boys STILL laugh about this; I guess the look of horror on my face was memorable. Since then, when I ask them to pack, they say, "Can you REALLY trust us to do this? We're guys." Okay, no mail about this being sexist. THEY said it, not me!
This week we also have advance reader comments about THE CASTRO GENE by Todd Buchholz and THE CHRYSALIS by Heather Terrell, as well as our May New in Paperback feature. Fiction titles include THE HUSBAND by Dean Koontz, KILLER INSTINCT by Joseph Finder, MARKED MAN by William Lashner, ONCE UPON A DAY by Lisa Tucker, QUEEN OF BABBLE by Meg Cabot and HELEN OF TROY by Margaret George. Among our nonfiction highlights are DISPATCHES FROM THE EDGE by Anderson Cooper, CHASING GHOSTS by Paul Rieckhoff and CONFESSIONS OF A WALL STREET ANALYST by Dan Reingold. My hammock is calling so I am off. Have a great long weekend of reading and a terrific week.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Barry Eisler, Author of REQUIEM FOR AN ASSASSIN
|
|
Barry Eisler's new novel, REQUIEM FOR AN ASSASSIN, is the sixth book in the acclaimed John Rain series, which features a half-American, half-Japanese assassin attempting to leave the killing business behind. In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Joe Hartlaub, Eisler attempts to shed light on his character's actions in this latest installment and explains the steps he takes to plot each book. He also discusses the travel involved to both accurately capture the series' exotic settings and realistically portray the mindset of Rain, reveals details about a prequel in the works and shares with readers some of his favorite authors and writing influences. REQUIEM FOR AN ASSASSIN by Barry Eisler (Thriller) Assassin John Rain wants out of the life. Unfortunately, though, he can't just walk away --- because the only way he can rescue a friend is to employ his deadly skills in a series of operations performed at the behest of an enemy with a secret agenda. Author Talk: Khaled Hosseini, Author of A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS
|
|
Following the tremendous success of his debut work of fiction, THE KITE RUNNER, Khaled Hosseini once again takes readers to the unfamiliar territory of his politically tumultuous homeland in A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. In this interview, Hosseini discusses his experiences visiting Kabul after an absence of over 25 years and explains how he was inspired to model his main characters after the Afghan women who have suffered from persecution, poverty and oppression under the rule of the Taliban. He also compares the thematic elements of his two novels, describes his humanitarian work with the UN and shares his thoughts on the current landscape of Afghanistan. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS by Khaled Hosseini (Fiction) Khaled Hosseini's follow-up to the runaway bestseller THE KITE RUNNER is a worthy successor to that absorbing novel. Set against the turbulent and painful backdrop of recent Afghan history, A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is the story of two remarkable women who endure persecution and violence. Our Newest One to Watch Author: Holly Peterson, Author of THE MANNY
|
|
The start of summer is the perfect time to kick off our latest One to Watch feature with Holly Peterson, whose book THE MANNY releases on June 19th. It's the story of a work-crazed TV producer who hires a male nanny, or manny, to attend to her son, who is less than attended to by his workaholic dad. What ensues? A terrifically fun romp of a book.
We have 10 advance reading copies of THE MANNY by Holly Peterson to give away to readers who would like to preview the book and comment about it. A description can be found by clicking the link below. If you are interested, please send your name and mailing address to OneToWatch@bookreporter.com by Friday, June 1st.
More about THE MANNY: What’s a Park Avenue working mom to do when her troubled son desperately needs a male role model and her husband is a power workaholic? If she’s like the gutsy heroine of Holly Peterson’s astute new comedy of manners among the ill-mannered elite, she does what every other woman on the block does. She hires herself a “manny.”
A solid middle-class girl from Middle America, Jamie Whitfield isn’t “one of them” but she lives in “the Grid,” the wealthiest acre of real estate in Manhattan, where big money and big media collide. And she has most everything they have --- a big new apartment, full-time help with her three children, as well as her very own detached Master of the Universe attorney husband. What she doesn’t have, however, is a full-time father figure for their struggling nine-year-old son, Dylan. But the rich haven’t yet encountered a problem they can’t hire someone else to solve.
Enter the manny.

Bookreporter.com Talks to f-stop Fitzgerald, Photographer of THE MIGHTY FALLEN
|
|
Bestselling author and world-renowned photographer f-stop Fitzgerald has published 12 books of his own photography on subjects ranging from fly fishing to Jerry Garcia, and has collaborated with Stephen King on NIGHTMARES IN THE SKY and Ken Follet on PILLARS OF THE ALMIGHTY. In this interview with Greg Fitzgerald (the son of Bookreporter.com's co-founder Carol Fitzgerald), f-stop recalls the family vacation that inspired THE MIGHTY FALLEN --- co-authored with Larry Bond --- in which he captures over 150 photographs of the country's greatest monuments and war memorials. He also discusses the stories behind his favorite images, shares memories and anecdotes from the 10-year process of putting this book together, and provides details about current and future projects. More about THE MIGHTY FALLEN: THE MIGHTY FALLEN: Our Nation’s Great War Memorials --- a collaboration between international photographer f-stop Fitzgerald and bestselling author and Navy veteran Larry Bond --- is a poignant and elegant tribute to some of the significant conflicts and the heroes that have contributed to America’s rich and noble history. Consisting of over 150 photographs and descriptions of memorials across North America during a 10-year period, Bond and Fitzgerald capture the essence of honor and sacrifice conveyed in these structures, which range from the newly erected World War II memorial in Washington, DC to Civil War battlefields and Revolutionary War figures.
The book presents hundreds of memorials, monuments and statues that honor over 300 years of military service and are meant to convey more than just a time and place. Intent on bringing history to a more personal level, Fitzgerald’s photographs --- along with accompanying text by Bond that describes the memorials and tells the stories behind them --- focus on the memories and emotions that the stone and bronze structures evoke, and often highlight the names and faces of the fallen soldiers who did not live to see the battle’s outcome.

More about THE SONNET LOVER: Did Shakespeare pen a series of passionate sonnets, unknown to modern scholarship, ardently praising a mysterious dark-haired beauty? This tantalizing question is raised in a letter to literature professor Rose Asher. But the letter’s author, Rose’s star pupil, is not telling. A troubled, enigmatic young man, he plunged to his death in front of the college’s entire faculty, an apparent suicide. Determined to find the truth, Rose journeys from New York to Italy, back to the magnificent Tuscan villa where as an undergraduate she first fell in love.
Lush, lyrical, and enthralling, THE SONNET LOVER vividly brings to life the Tuscan countryside and the fascinating world of the Renaissance poets. Unmatched in her ability to evoke atmosphere and intrigue, Carol Goodman delivers her most ambitious and satisfying work to date, a seductive novel that skillfully propels its reader headlong to the final suspenseful page.

13 BULLETS by David Wellington (Horror/Thriller)
All the official reports say they are dead --- extinct since the late ’80s, when a fed named Arkeley nailed the last vampire in a fight that nearly killed him. But the evidence proves otherwise.
When a state trooper named Caxton calls the FBI looking for help in the middle of the night, it is Arkeley who gets the assignment --- who else? He’s been expecting such a call to come eventually. Sure, it has been years since any signs of an attack, but Arkeley knows what most people don’t: there is one left. In an abandoned asylum she is rotting, plotting, and biding her time in a way that only the undead can.
Caxton is out of her league on this case and more than a little afraid, but the fed made it plain that there is only one way out. But the worst thing is the feeling that the vampires want more than just her blood. They want her for a reason, one she can’t guess; a reason her sphinxlike partner knows but won’t say; a reason she has to find out --- or die trying.
Now there are only 13 bullets between Caxton and Arkeley and the vampires. There are only 13 bullets between us, the living, and them, the damned.

Now in Stores: A GOOD AND HAPPY CHILD by Justin Evans
|
|
A GOOD AND HAPPY CHILD by Justin Evans (Psychological Thriller)
As George Davies delves into his childhood memories, he begins to recall things he hasn’t thought of in twenty years. Events, people, and strange situations come rushing back. The odd, rambling letters his father sent home before he died. The jovial mother who started dating too soon after his father’s death. A boy who appeared one night when George was lonely, then told him secrets he didn’t want to know. How no one believed this new friend was real and that he was responsible for the bad things that were happening.
Terrified by all that he has forgotten, George struggles to remember what really happened in the months following his father’s death. Were his ominous visions and erratic behavior the product of a grief-stricken child’s overactive imagination (a perfectly natural reaction to the trauma of loss, as his mother insisted)? Or were his father’s colleagues, who blamed a darker, more malevolent force, right to look to the supernatural as a means to end George’s suffering? Twenty years later, George still does not know. But when a mysterious murder is revealed, remembering the past becomes the only way George can protect himself --- and his young family.
A psychological thriller in the tradition of Donna Tartt’s THE SECRET HISTORY --- with shades of THE EXORCIST --- the smart and suspenseful A GOOD AND HAPPY CHILD leaves you questioning the things you remember and frightened of the things you’ve forgotten.

ROOTS: The Saga of an American Family - The 30th Anniversary Edition by Alex Haley
One of the most important books and television series ever to appear, ROOTS galvanized the nation, and created an extraordinary political, racial, social, and cultural dialogue that hadn’t been seen since the publication of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. The book sold over 1,000,000 copies in the first year, and the miniseries was watched by an astonishing 130,000,000 people.
ROOTS opened up the minds of Americans of all colors and faiths to one of the darkest and most painful parts of America’s past. ROOTS also fostered a remarkable dialogue about not just the past, but the then present day 1970s and how America has fared since the days portrayed in ROOTS.
Vanguard Press feels that it is important to publish ROOTS: The 30th Anniversary Edition to remind the generation that originally read it that there are issues that still need to be discussed and debated, and to introduce to a new and younger generation, a book that will help them understand, perhaps for the first time, the drama and reality of what took place during the time of ROOTS.
