Bailey Weggins was onto a good thing as contributing writer for Gloss magazine --- but as we know all too well, all good things must come to an end. Bailey's just sorry it had to be now. With her first book coming out soon, she was counting on her affiliation with Gloss to lend credibility to her debut effort and help with its promotion. Now she needs to find a new position, and quick.
Enter old friend and co-worker Robby Hart. While it might not be the most prestigious of jobs, Robby is employed by celebrity gossip rag Buzz. Before Bailey has had time to clean out her desk at Gloss, she lands a new position as celebrity crime journalist for Buzz.
While Bailey is glad for the new place to hang her hat, she finds the job at Buzz a bit overwhelming. How is a girl supposed to get any work done with the editor-in-chief, she-bitch Mona Hodges, throwing copy at the writers and belittling them with loud comments that can be heard throughout the office? While Bailey manages to stay on Mona's good side, the same cannot be said for the other Buzz employees.
Bailey barely has had time to organize her new desk when Mona fires Robby in a loud and demeaning scene. When Mona turns up dead that same evening, Robby catches the eye of the police as a prime suspect. While Bailey doesn't think her old friend did it, one can never be sure what someone will do when pushed far enough --- and God knows, Mona knew how to push the buttons of even a saint. One thing in Robbie's favor is Mona's ability to belittle and alienate almost everyone she came in contact with. The list of people whose lives would be made better by Mona's absence is a long one.
When interim editor Nash Nolan assigns Bailey to cover Mona's murder for the magazine, Bailey grabs the opportunity to delve into the mystery and see what she can come up with. An attack in Little Odessa, a predominantly Russian neighborhood, and an attempt on her life at a ritzy picnic in the Hamptons, are not enough to deter Bailey from digging for more info.
As she digs, however, she crosses paths with Beau Regan, a gorgeous and charming filmmaker. Is he the meaningless summer fling she's been hoping for, or is he something a lot more serious? Only time will tell.
As always, Kate White brings us a charming and down-to-earth heroine, and one adventure after another. This is an easy and pleasurable summer read with plenty of well-paced suspense to keep you turning those pages!
