Author Interview -- July 27, 2007

The promise, as I remember it, happened this way.

And so begins Cork O’Connor’s tale of a hopeless love affair between a young Ojibwe guide and a white woman, an affair that ended in treachery, betrayal, and murder. Although it’s a story that reaches more than seventy years into the past, Cork will discover that its grip is as deadly as ever.

Called to the sickbed of Henry Meloux, an Ojibwe medicine man and Cork’s spiritual guide, Cork receives a desperate request from his gravely ill friend: find the son Meloux fathered long ago but has never seen. With little to go on --- the maiden name of the boy’s mother and her picture in an ancient pocket watch --- Cork soon locates the man he believes may be Meloux’s long-lost son: wealthy Canadian industrialist Henry Wellington. Cork’s attempt to set up a meeting between Meloux and Wellington, a notorious recluse, ends in disaster. Shortly afterward, someone tries to murder Meloux. All signs point north across the border to Henry Wellington. But why would the mysterious businessman want his father dead?

Cork’s investigation is a journey through time as Meloux reveals the story of his youth, when, as a guide in the 1920s, he led two white men and a young white woman into the Canadian wilderness. While the white men searched for gold, Meloux found another treasure: love. But it was a love as doomed as the expedition itself.

As Cork struggles to find the answers that may save Meloux’s life, the past and present race toward a deadly collision on the rocky shore of Thunder Bay.

Critical Praise

"…deftly plotted…the action builds to a violent and satisfying denouement."
--- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"THUNDER BAY is William Kent Krueger’s finest work. A strong story with a fast-beating heart, this is the kind of novel that will bring many new readers knocking on Cork O’Connor’s door. Count me as one of them."
--- Michael Connelly, New York Times bestselling author of THE OVERLOOK

"THUNDER BAY has everything that William Kent Krueger's longtime fans have come to expect in this lovely series -- and everything it needs to entice new readers into the fold. Steeped in place, sweetly melancholic in tone, it braids together multiple stories about love, loss and family. The result is a wholly satisfying novel that is over almost too soon."
--- Laura Lippman, bestselling author of WHAT THE DEAD KNOW

"William Kent Krueger is one of the best mystery writers out there, and THUNDER BAY is his most powerful novel to date. Any reader who has yet to pick up one of his Cork O’Connor suspense novels is in for a rare treat."
--- Vince Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of ACT OF TREASON

"William Kent Krueger has one of the most fresh and authentic voices in crime fiction. In THUNDER BAY he uses it to tell a resonant, gripping story. Don't miss this book."
--- SJ Rozan, Edgar, Anthony, and Shamus Award winning author of IN THIS RAIN

"Cork is a good man, and this is a good book."
--- Minneapolis Star Tribune

"As usual, it's Krueger's insightful portrayal of small-town life and his deepening exploration of Cork 's character that propel the story."
--- Booklist
