Summer Entertaining

Summer entertaining can be casual or ambitious. There are warm nights when flipping burgers on the grill is all I want to do, but there are also nights when I do things like try to get the blue curacao in the margaritas to match the color of the water in the pool!

Here are some of my favorite books for Summer Entertaining --- they are the ones I reach for first when I am planning summer meals. If you have a special book that you think means Summer Entertaining, please drop me at note at Carol@bookreporter.com.

Designed for people who want to entertain, this book comes out of Ina Garten's extensive experience catering and running her East Hampton specialty food store, The Barefoot Contessa. Though the many pictures highlight her beautiful presentation, the recipes aim for simplicity, supporting her philosophy that neither cooking nor entertaining should be a chore. This is not a book of fussy techniques and fancy recipes, THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA is just for entertaining your guests with comfort food raised to a gourmet level.

COYOTE CAFE
by Mark Miller
Summer means light meals, but often we want to punch up the flavors a bit to match the hot weather. This book is a favorite when I want to turn up the heat. It brings a bit of Santa Fe, where Mark Miller's restaurant of the same name has attracted a loyal clientele. My favorite recipe: grilled tuna with black beans and goat cheese. The combination of flavors is balanced, and an incredibly rewarding culinary treat.

THE SILVER PALATE COOKBOOK
by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins
This book was first published in 1979, but its star does not dim. Whenever a friend says, "I want to learn to cook," this is a title I recommend. I love the way it teaches readers how to blend tastes and flavors, allowing them to learn what herbs and spices work together. One of my favorite summer recipes --- Spicy Shrimp.
