David Morrell

- At age 17, David Morrell decided to become a writer after watching "Route 66."
- A native Canadian, Morrell moved to the United States to attend Penn State, where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in American literature.
- Morrell credits writer William Tenn with teaching him the basics of writing fiction. Morrell met Tenn at Penn State.
- In 1972 Morrell's debut novel, FIRST BLOOD, was published. The novel introduced Morrell's famous character, Rambo. FIRST BLOOD was filmed as Rambo and spawned two film sequels.
- From 1970 to 1986, David Morrell wrote fiction and taught at the University of Iowa simultaneously. He eventually retired from teaching to write full time.
- Morrell has researched and trained for many of the feats highlighted in his novels, including firearms and hostage negotiation.
- Morrell's work has sold 18 million copies and has been translated into 26 languages.
- David Morrell is currently the co-president of the International Thriller Writers organization.
- In addition to his novels, Morrell has written nonfiction. Among Morrell's nonfiction credits is FIREFLIES, a memoir about his son Matthew who died from bone cancer in 1987, age 15.
- The Special Operations Association and the Association of Former Intelligence Officers named David Morrell an honorary lifetime member.
