Allison from Houston, TX: What will your specialty be? Will you go to a practice in the burbs or continue to make a difference by stirring the pot with your books?

Joshua Spanogle: It's a very timely question, since I'm in the throes of deciding which residency to pursue. Whatever specialty I chose, ideally I would balance a medical and writing career. They complement each other nicely --- writing allows me to process things that go on in medicine; medicine exposes me to a broad (and wonderful) world.
