Here are comments from our group of Advance Readers about Nevada Barr's 13 ½.

George from Waltham, MA

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
Nelson DeMille and John Grisham are my favorites.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
This is a beautifully written, powerful psychological thriller. Her characters are three-dimensional and very real, and their interactions intense and credible. The plot was nothing short of brilliant, suspenseful and downright creepy.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
As a matter of fact, about halfway thru 13 1/2 I did a little research about Nevada Barr, and found that her first book in the Anna Pigeon series was TRACK OF THE CAT. I bought it and read it before finishing 13 1/2. That was unlike me, but I really enjoyed that and anticipate reading others in the series. Good reading, good plots, good characters and great suspense.

Jeannie from Milroy, PA

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
John Sanford, Harlan Coben, Iris Johansen, John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, James Patterson, and dozens more.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
It took me a while to get into the book. So many times I put it down, not wanting to read it, but picked it right back up. It was hard for me to put myself "in" the book as a bystander in the background. The mental trauma that was going on throughout the book was so dramatic, and at times my nerves and muscles ached from being tensed up. I started to understand it more and eventually it was easier, once I realized who the characters were and what I thought was going on. I knew I was right about the murderer. It was the most intense mind twister I have ever read.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
Yes, but the story line, characters, settings, and type of jobs the characters have need to draw me to it. There has to be something in the review that interests me to read a book.

Marilyn from Moonachie, NJ

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
This is my first read by Nevada Barr and I enjoyed it very much.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
Some of the suspense/thriller authors I usually read are James Patterson, Robin Cook, Andrew Taylor, John Sanford, Kathy Reichs, J. D. Robb, Patricia Cornwell, Cornelia Read, Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman and others.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
I enjoyed 13 1/2 very much. It was a tiny bit predictable but the characters were interesting and the plot was well played out.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
I would buy other Nevada Barr books.

Mark from Cleveland, TN

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
No.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
James Patterson, Jeffery Deaver, and Lee Child.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
I love the book. What caught my eye was its title. Then when I read it, it was a quick read. I love the characters. I wanted to know what the title meant, and I loved how she put it in the book.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
Yes, I'm looking at her past books.

Rita from Wichita Falls, TX

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
No, I haven't read a Nevada Barr book before.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
I read a lot of other authors: Nora Roberts, Dan Brown etc.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
I have to admit the story is a good, suspenseful one, but I have a hard time reading books about crimes against children. This one kept me going back and forth, wondering who the bad guy was. I think this would make a great movie, as it would keep people on the edge of their seats.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
I think I will go through her booklist and try another one in the future. I have a lot of authors whose whole backlists I've read, and I will have to add Nevada Barr to that list.

Susan from Olney, MD

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
This was my first Nevada Barr read and I was pleasantly surprised.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
I read thrillers, but they are really not on the top of my must-read list. As far as thrillers go, authors I have enjoyed in the past were Robert Ludlum, John Grisham, and Dan Brown to name just a few.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
I liked the writing style, the characters, and the development of the story. I found the character, Dylan, very interesting.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
I would most likely read another book by Nevada Barr and I was glad for the opportunity to read this one.

Jeanine from Hillside, NJ

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
No, I have not.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
I like James Patterson, John Sandford, Tami Hoag and Greg Iles.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
I thought 13 1/2 was ok. I figured out who the "real" killer was early on. I soon began to wonder just how it would be revealed. I felt the ending was rushed and I found some scenes to be unrealistic.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
Yes, I would. I have heard of Nevada Barr and do know that she's had a couple of reprints of some of her past novels.

Margaret from Signal Mountain, TN

Have you previously read a book by Nevada Barr?
Yes, all of them. I especially enjoy the descriptions of the places (“National Forests,” etc.) where the books are set.

What other suspense/thriller authors do you usually read?
Mary Higgins Clark, Stuart Woods, Stephen White, David Morrell, Michael Palmer, Robin Cook, Jeffery Deaver, etc.

What did you think of 13 1/2?
I didn't really care for it. I found it to be predictable from Chapter 3 on --- I knew who did it. It was so obvious. That kind of spoiled the reading of the book.

Would you ever read a future book by Nevada Barr?
Yes, I will read future books by her. I just hope she goes back to her Anna Pigeon character format.
