THE SWITCH
by Sandra Brown, 3 stars
I hadn't read a Sandra Brown book for a couple of years.
PURE BRAIN CANDY. Decent plot, glittery characters and
a good place to lose yourself for about five hours.
THE ROAD TO OMAHA by Robert Ludlum,
4 stars
This book has the most hilarious characters I have ever
encountered in print. I laughed from begining to end.
It was delightful to find the comic side of Robert Ludlum.

TENDER AT THE BONE by Ruth Reichl, 5
stars
A wonderful book. Mostly factual and replete with recipes,
it is a delightful story. Reading the tales of her mother
(the Queen of Mold) and her mother's entertaining was
hilarious.

THE ATTORNEY by Steve Martini, 5 stars
Truly a surprise ending, with a plot that has the reader
involved all the way.

WITHOUT RESERVATIONS by Alice Steinbach,
5 stars
This book was recommended as absolute first on the To
Read Summer List. It is! The travels are every woman's
wish list. I moved each step with Alice with my heart
yearning for the adventure I've never had.
FAMILY HAPPINESS: A Novel by Laurie
Colwin, 5 stars
I'm fascinated with the writing in this novel. Its subject
is so mundane but its presentation makes it a book I can't
put down.

TALK BEFORE SLEEP: A Novel by Elizabeth
Berg
Reading the list of Breast Cancer related books in the
newsletter brought to mind something I read recently.
TALK BEFORE SLEEP is a fictional work grounded in an autobiographical
experience. I found her writing to be compelling, creative
and extremely easy to read.

WHAT SHE SAW Lucinda Rosenfeld, 5 stars
This is a funny yet poignant book about growing up, being
female, and the males who populate the terrain along the
way. The first chapter really captured my interest and
made me laugh out loud. It was hard to put down!

BOUNDARIES by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr.
John Townsend, 3 stars
A non-fiction which helps you set boundaries for yourself.
RAINBOW SIX by Tom Clancy, 4 stars
A long book, but a good story line.

THE VOYAGE OF THE JERLE SHANNARA: Ilse Witch
by Terry Brooks, 4 stars
First in a new trilogy. Brooks' return to the Four Lands
of Shannara fame is welcome indeed. Walker Boh of the
"Heritage" series returns to lead an expedition to retrieve
a mysterious artifact of enormous magical power.
ON WRITING: A Memoir of the Craft by
Stephen King, 4 stars
A short (288 pages) book, half instructional, half autobiographical.
It's written in an easy-to-read, conversational style.
It felt like I was listening to an intimate discussion
of writing.

NEITHER HERE NOR THERE by Bill Bryson,
5 stars

THE QUIET GAME by Greg Iles, 4.99 stars
If they don't make a movie out of this one, they are missing
out on a sure thing.
TrishRux@aol.com
WHILE I WAS GONE by Sue Miller, 4 stars
FasCinating look at marriage, motherhood, infidelity,
and how much you should tell about your past.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME by Victor
Hugo, 5 stars
(There's a reason this one is considered a classic!).
I listened to this unabridged audio read by George Guidall,
and it is magnificent. It's the sad tale of the hunchback
Quasimodo, bell ringer of Notre Dame, and his ill-fated
love for Esmeralda, the dancing gypsy girl. Highly recommended!
ETHAN FROME by Edith Wharton, 5 stars
This grim story, set in New England around the turn of
the last century, will give you chills. Ethan and his
wife, a cold, forboding woman given to hypochondria of
the most astonishing degree, take in a young female relative
of hers to help out. Pretty quickly, all bets are off!
A great read. |
