SILENT HONOR by Danielle Steel

EPaton@aol.com
MERRICK by Anne Rice, 5 stars
I entered this last week but I had only started it. Now I'm 2/3 of the way into it. I'm totally mesmerized. David Talbot's description first of the young girl and later of the young girl as an adult holds your interest. It is completely fascinating.

Totalcountry2@aol.com
THE SWITCH by Sandra Brown, 5 stars
A book that I couldn't put down till I was done. It took me 2 days. It is about 2 identical twin sisters who switch places for the night and one of them is murdered and it leaves you guessing till the very end which one of them is still alive.

STELLA IN HEAVEN: Almost A Novel by Art Buchwald, 5 stars
You must read Humor Columnist , Art Buchwald's "Stella in Heaven". His fictional take on life after death is a delightful read, whimsical and funny with some emotional bits thrown in. It's about Roger Folger, recently widowed after almost 40 years of marriage to his Stella. His problem, besides his grief, is that Stella made all his decisions in life as well as told him what to do. He's lost now as what to do and how to do it since her death. Well, I didn't expect him to end up talking to Stella everynight about her death, what decisions he should make etc , and then having her answer him. A must read as Stella describes Heaven, plots to fix him up with a nice jewish lady and just about everything else. I read this in one night ! A refreshing and delightful change you are sure to enjoy ! Especially when he gets sick and tired of Stella's interferances.

DIAMOND BAY by Linda Howard, 5 stars
The story of Kell, a special agent , who ends up having his boat blown up and getting shot while on vacation. He washes up on shore where ex investigator Rachel finds him. With the help of Joe, her guard dog, she drags him back to her cottage, nurses him back to health with the help of her friends. All the time, falling in love with this mystery man. When he comes to and spends his days being taken care of by Rachel, the romance begins as he too falls for Rachel. But they have to worry about the would be murderers after Kell, and the fact that because of his job and danger involved, he won't commithimself. Only Linda Howard can write a Romance such as what you'll read in the pages of Diamod Bay. I couldn't put it down. Do they end up together, do the killers find them ? Read and you will see.

BRUCULINU, AMERICA by Vincent Schiavelli, 5 stars
Actor Vincent Schiavelli, who starred in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Tomorrow Never Dies and Ghost" has written this cookbook about Sicilian -American Brooklyn and his stories of growing up around some of the best food made by his relatives and friends. Your mouth will water as he describes each recipe and tells you family stories behind each recipe listed. I love cookbooks and this one is now a permanent part of my collection.

A WIDOW FOR ONE YEAR by John Irving
I loved this book. I feel it is one of his best. The story of a young girl growing up with photos and stories of her two dead brothers. I laughed and cried. A great read!

BLACK NOTICE by Patricia Cornwell
THE LAST PRECINCT by Patricia Cornwell
I have read all of Ms. Cornwell's novels. I confess to an addiction to the adventures of Scarpetta, Lucy, Marino, etc. Read Black Notice first; the story continues with Last Precinct. These are mysteries with psychological overtones.

WE WERE THE MULVANEYS by Joyce Carol Oates
I read many of Oprah's picks, and this one was outstanding. The story of this family will stay with you. It brings home the point that one event can change the course of your lifef (and your family's) forever.

WINTER SOLSTICE by Rosamunde Pilcher
Ever since I happened on "The Shell Seekers" years ago, I have returned to her books. I love sitting in a comfy chair (with an afghan and tea with honey) and immersing myself in her stories, usually set in Scotland. I can feel the damp, cold weather- and also the warmth of her characters, who become like old, dear friends by the end of the novel. This one is no exception.

nana@toast.net
HONEST ILLUSIONS by Nora Robert, 5 stars
Excellent.

MOMACALADA@aol.com
MYSTIC RIVER by Dennis Lehane
Right now, I'm 3/4 of the way thru it. Can't put it down and think it's just superb!!! But my favorite mystery character is Matthew Scudder from the Lawrence Block novels....can't wait until his next one!!!!

Led37@aol.com
THE RED TENT by Anita Diamant, 4 stars
Diamant made you feel as if you were really in the story at times. SIgn of a good author.

A YEAR DOWN YONDER by Richard Peck, 5 stars
2001 Newbery Award - Good characterizatrion and sarcasm as Peck can write it. Should readily engage young adult readers.

DISOBEDIENCE by Jane Hamilton, 4 stars
Characterization shifts a lot. Had a hard time sympathizing with any one character for any length of time.

MTK12345@aol.com
WINONA'S WEB by Priscilla Cogan, 4 1/2 stars

THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB by Sandra Dallas, 5 stars
Not quite finished but a definite 5 stars!

Honeybunn53@aol.com
SMART VS PRETTY by Valerie Frankel
It was a great book about two sisters who own a coffee shop. One's smart and one's pretty. It's outrageously funny.

MysteryNut19@aol.com
TELLING LIES by Wendy Hornsby, 3 stars
MIDNIGHT BABY by Wendy Hornsby, 4 stars
Filmmaker Maggie MacGowen teams up with L.A. Detective Mike Flint to solve murders in the heart of L.A. These mysteries are a bit dark at times as they are set in the poorer sections of the city. Compelling mysteries though - hard to put down.

Showhorse401@aol.com
OUT ON A LIMB by Shirley MacLaine, 4 stars.
Engaging true story of the actress' spiritual quest.

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PET LOVER'S SOUL by Jack Canfield, 5 stars
Inspiring stories, keep tissues ready, but don't go there if you just lost your own pet.

SOUL MATES by Jess Stern, 5 stars.
The classic source to learn about soul mates.

THE SECRETS OF LIFE by Stuart Wilde, 5 stars
Everything by Stuart has something good to offer on your spiritual journey.

ltrippy@avistar.com
THE SHIP AND THE STORM: Hurricane Mitch and the Loss of The Fantome by Jim Carrier, 5 stars
Carrier does a first-rate job of giving individuated life to the star-crossed crew of the Fantome...gripping but never exploitative.Jim Carrier has carefully researched and told the story of the Fantome and her history. He has recounted the last month of the ship and its aftermath without any of the sensationalism and second-guessing that was common in so much of the press and in magazine articles afterwards. And finally, he applied "Forensic Journalism" to draw some conclusions about those moments that we don't know what happened. This is a story that is a fine addition to anyone with an interest in stories of the sea and human drama. Of course, those who have been fortunate to sail on the tall ships will insist on owning this book.

CrZyGAgirl@aol.com
STONES FROM THE RIVER by Ursula Hegi, 4 stars
This book is informative as well as captivating. The book tells the story of life for the Germans and the Jews before and after World War II. When I read the book, a new found knowledge of the events happening in Germany implanted itself in my mind. I highly recommend this book. It is a very long book but well worth the time spent on it!

PATTYLD@aol.com
THE BOOK OF GOD by Walter Wangerin

A8h2o@aol.com
THE BONESETTER'S DAUGHTER by Amy Tan, 4 stars
A story of a daughter learning to see her mother as a person with a rich history to share. It was a great read.

KLASSLESS@aol.com
SLAVES IN THE FAMILY by Edward Ball
I've been on a history kick lately. I live in the community where many of the Ball slaves were held--in rural South Carolina. I couldn't keep from contrasting what I read about slavery with what exists in South Carolina today--a form of economic slavery perpetuated by our state legislature. Things have changed to some extent, but now instead of chains of metal the chains are made of inadequate resource sharing with all residents of South Carolina. I really enjoyed the book and feel it offers a glimpse of the conflicting emotions that reside in many Americans--black and white. It also offers some hope for the future because we learn of the author's personal experiences with all the members of his family--those acknowledged on the official family tree and those who belong on the family tree.

HARRY POTTER SERIES by J.K. Rowling
I loved them for their simplicity--it was the old good vs. evil battle in each book. I remained interested in them, and will remain a fan. To me, they are this generation's equivalent of the Star Wars movies--but I am envious because they are books instead of movies followed by books!

Gar the Kra@aol.com
DINOSAUR WARS by Thomas P. Hopp, 5 stars
A new work by a new author, this is a scary and fun tale of dinosaurs returning to earth from space! An intelligent species escaped extinction - now they are back and humans are the endangered species. Very well written, great characters. Jurassic Park, move over!

ChristiMiller@msn.com
IN FIDELITY by M.J. Rose, 2 1/2 stars
Interesting story. Very erotic. However, the characters did not stay with me the way that some have. When I put the book down, I put the book down. I wasn't constantly worrying about what was going to happen.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY by Laura Zigman, 3 stars
Hysterical read. Laughed out loud. Great for single women. Sometimes I thought she was writing about me. The movie version is due out soon called "Someone Like You" starring Ashlely Judd and Greg Kinnear.

PATRICIART@aol.com
MOONSTONE by Wilkie Collins, 5 stars
This book was reccomended by my librarian and I owe her a debt of gratitude. This classic mystery set in 19th century England will forever be one of my favorites. Turn off the TV. This is better than anything on it.

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA by Arthur Golden, 5 stars
An engrossing read about a life and time few Americans can even guess at. This book sent me on a quest to see Kimonos in books and on the internet.

THE GIVER by Lois Lowry, 4 stars
Another great read geared toward younger readers. If you ever wondered what a truely worry free society would be like, here's a glimse. Great for younger readers.

TIMELINE by Michael Crichton, 3 stars
I enjoyed the read for a while and found I was skipping over parts just to get finished with it. Reads like a movie treatment.

EBritton@shelbycounty-al.org
A PAINTED HOUSE by John Grisham, 4 stars
I recently finished this book although I was hesitant about reading it. I had heard that it was different from his other books. I was happy that I did. This is one of his best books. I could picture him growing up in surroundings such as these. The characters are believable and we all know bullies such as Hank and Cowboy. I wish that his next book would continue this story.

Corkytp@aol.com
MURDER UNDER BLUE SKIES by Willard Scott with Bill Crider, 3 stars
Yes, this is the Willard Scott of Today Show fame, and the leading character is much like Willard. This is a mystery that takes place in an imaginary town in Virginia after the lead character retires from a morning TV show. I bought the book on a sale rack to see if it would be entertaining, and it was, and if I were to find the sequel on a sale rack, I'd buy it too....but then I like to read almost everything.

Netteatym@aol.com
1ST TO DIE by James Patterson 5 stars
Patterson really has a feel for women's emotions, attitudes, feelings and emotions. In this latest creation he bonds 4 women as friends from various career backgrounds including a coroner, and together they help each other through personal struggles and professional trials to triumph with the help and support of each other. I love the way Patterson entwines the personal and professional lives of these 4 women to become supper sleuths second only to Alex Cross.
