A fascinating history of Las Vegas - particularily the last 10 years.

HIDDEN PASSIONS: Secrets From the Diaries of Tabitha Lenox by Tabitha Lenox, 4 stars
This book is a hoot. Following in the footsteps of the soap opera titled Passions, it goes more in depth about what is seen on the small screen. The book, as well as the soap needs to be taken lightly, with more than JUST a grain of salt ( the whole salt shaker is appropriate). It's tongue in check, playful and dramatic but with a humorous/horror twist. What fun. I refer to it as my guilty pleasure and the book is no different. In fact, it's better because it's description of the surroundings and people is very rich.

THE PLEASING HOUR by Lily King, no rating given.
Excellent coming of age novel, I could barely put it down.

AMY AND ISABELLE by Elizabeth Strout, no rating given.
This book was beautifully and vividly written. The story of a mother and daughter, it was heartbreaking, stunning, and wonderful all at once. I highly reccomend it.

WATCH ME by A. J. Holt, 4 stars
A suspenseful thriller filled with murder and mayhem paired with the Internet. A fast paced read with interesting characters. A definite recommend!!!

LOST AND FOUND by Jayne Ann Krentz, 4 stars
Caddy Briggs is an independant art consultant working in California. While online she meets Mack Easton who owns an online company called Lost and Found. They track down stolen art pieces. He hires Caddy to help him. Caddy starts imagining what Mack looks like based on his sexy voice. They do meet and neither wants to admit that they have more than a working relationship going on. You will enjoy this book. Especially when Caddy hires Mack to investigate her Aunt Vesta's drowning because Caddy feels her aunt was murdered as she was an excellent swimmer. That's when all the twists and turns start as well as some unexpected surprises in regards to the Art World and their relationship.

THE PROGRAM by Stephen White, 5 stars
When New Orleans District Attorney Kirsten Lord is threatened by one of the criminals she is sending to prison she is forced into the Witness Protection program called WitSec with her young daughter. The problem is that as District Attorney she has publically criticized the WitSec program in a very negative way, the very program she is now in . A great read.

THE PILOT'S WIFE by Anita Shreve, no rating given
An emotional journey about a wife who loses her husband, a pilot, by plane crash and then has to face new things she finds out about him, including the fact that he may have commited suicide taking all the passengers with him. Very touching and enjoyable to read.

A WALK TO REMEMBER by Nicholas Sparks, no rating given
A heart touching story about love and growing up. I had tears in my eyes a couple of times throughout the book, which doesn't happen often. When I completed the book I sighed and held it to my chest (seriously).

BRIDGET JONES: THE EDGE OF REASON by Helen Fielding, 4.5 stars
Fielding truly met my expectations with this sequel to BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY. The book was absolutely hysterical in the same fashion as the first novel about a woman obsessed with her weight who wAnders through the single scene looking for Mr. Right. Fielding helps us laugh at the body conscious, marriage-obsessed, alcohol-abusing world to which many young single women inhabit. This book is truly a guilty pleasure and is an easy and quick read.

THE HANDMAID'S TALE by Margaret Atwood, 5 stars
Told from the voice of a young woman whose rights, properties and family are taken away, Atwood shows us a fictional world based upon actual events in history. The main character of the novel is forced to choose between forced labor cleaning up nuclear waste or serving as a handmaid, a woman who must become pregnant and bare a child for a barren couple. Atwood's world where most women have little power is frightening, but shows us how easily we can slide into that world. An extremely well written and suspenseful satire.

1ST TO DIE by James Patterson, 5 stars
This book is quick reading, suspenseful, and very enjoyable. It takes place in San Francisco, and the author does a masterful job developing the main chartacters, and intertwining the lives of those he has created. A series of wedding day murders has the whole city up in arms, and solving the crimes is in true James Patterson form. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

SINS OF THE FATHERS by Susan Howatch, 5 stars
The only thing better than a really good book....is one you can read twice and enjoy more the second time. This book came to me in a bag of "passalong books". I read everything she wrote many years ago....Loved "The Rich are Different" and thought it was a wonderful title. However, SINS OF THE FATHERS is written in a fashion where the story of one family is told through the eyes of different members, of different generations. It has a strong theme running through to hold it together. I read it as if I had never seen one of her books, as a gem of discovery.

All "Maggody" books by Joan Hess, 5 stars
They follow the female sheriff of a small Arkansas town and the citizens. Each book has many chuckles. The sheriff's mother and her best friend drive Arly crazy. They are always up to something. This is a quirky town with many oddball characters. If you like light mystery these books are just right. I look forward to each new book that comes out. It is better if you can read them in order as there is some continuity to the plots.

RIGHT AS RAIN by George P. Pelecanos, 3 stars
The plot of this book is good but I had trouble connecting with any of the characters --- was a little too "muddy" at times.

LAST ENCHANTMENT by Mary Stewart, 5 stars
I loved this one, a well written story about the legend of King Arthur and Merlin.

Durenjpm@aol.com
THE COVENANT by James Michener, 5 stars
This is a wonderful book about the settlement of Africa by Dutch and English pioneers. There are very human stories of these early settlers' everyday lives, hardships and travels within the continent.

ICED by Jenny Siler, 2 stars
I did not like this book at all. I thought it was bleak, cold, depressing and hard. I disliked the main character Megan intensely and couldn't wait for the book to end.

PLAIN TRUTH by Jodi Picoult, 5 stars
This was a terrific book! It had a unique story and very interesting characters. The descriptions of life among the Amish were not only fascinating, but extremely well written.

EVANS ABOVE by Rhys Bowen, 4 stars
A sweet series, well written and engrossing. An easy, relaxing mystery to read.

ABANDON INDIANA by Amy Hensley, 5 stars
An excellent debut! The residents of Abandon, Indiana are truly characters. The author tells a twisted tale of how these people deal with life's circumstances in often bizarre ways. The reader cheers on the main character, Reece, on her quest to abandon Indiana.
