Linda
Secret Passion by Layle Giusto
Rating: 5 Stars
I must say that book was very good and the ending was a shock, but I won't no more. You's will just have to get a copy (LoL). But trust me, this was a very good book. I did not want to go to sleep; I just wanted to keep reading this book that is how good it was.

Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice
Rating: 4 Stars
This is the first Anne Rice book I have read. Although the writing is rather simplistic as it is written in the voice of seven-year-old Jesus, once you get past the first pages, you get used to it.

Although much has been written about Jesus' relationship with his mother, Rice focuses on Jesus' relationship with his extended family, particularly the men in the family.

Joseph and James (Joseph's son by his deceased wife) are fully realized characters and their interactions with Jesus are touching.

Familiar stories from the Bible about Jesus' early life are recounted, along with what life was like in the Middle East at that time.

I look forward to the sequels about Jesus that Rice will write.

Jemina J by Jane Green
Rating: 5 Stars
I really liked this book a lot. When I started to read it, I did not want to put it down. The characters in this book were good. Jane Green is the best I love her books.

Linda
Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is really good. For those who like to read romance, this is a good choice.

Rachael
Dirty Little Secrets by Julie Leto
Rating: 4 Stars
I really really liked this book. The story line got really good after about 50 or so pages. The beginning turned me off a little. There's some Spanish words in the book, and the author doesn't tell you what they mean. If she had put a little glossary in the back or a footnote on the bottom it would have helped. Most of the words were common ones that I could figure out, but it frustrated me a bit not to know what some of them were. The sex scenes were a little too explicit. BUT once the story got going, I really liked it a lot. Give it a chance. It's a promising new series.

A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve
Rating: 2 Stars
Anita Shreve is running on her past good books, three or four books ago. This one has no interesting plot, and no characters you care about or even really get to know. She should have stuck with the plot within the plot. It was a little more interesting than the rest of the book. Someday I really hope we get another good one from Anita Shreve.

Barb R.
The Christmas Jars by Jason Wright
Rating: 3 Stars
CHRISTMAS JARS, while it contains a variety of characters, becomes the story of two people. Hope is a dedicated reporter looking for her first big story. She believes she has found it when she experiences a jar of money left at her home in a time of crisis. In her search for the story behind this act of giving, she meets the Maxwell family and their charismatic, caring father Adam. Hope must balance her personal desire for success as a published reporter and Adam's personal desire for privacy. THE CHRISTMAS JARS explores the deepest meanings of family, caring, and traditions. The book examines the affect of past actions on the present as it comes to its unexpected ending.

As a light book that reads as a short story, through character development and story length, it will be the stocking stuffer, Secret Santa giving, feel good book book for the year.

The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
Rating: 3 Stars
THE SPACE BETWEEN US is the story of divisions written in beautiful, slow moving prose. Set in the modern day Bombay, it explores the still existent separation of classes, the servants and the masters. By using the character of the servant woman, Bhima, and the mistress she serves for many years, the novel explores the relationship between them. Although together every day for many years, through marriages, births and deaths, the women cannot overcome the distinctions between them. As Bhima struggles to survive her life in the slums of Bombay she encounters the signs of her place in the society at every turn.

But, the novel also examines the divisions that can occur between man and woman, husband and wife, between family members and between generations. By telling the stories of the present and the past of these two women and their families, the author shows how culture affects all pieces of their lives.

In an ending that tears apart the hearts and souls of both women, it still leads the way for redemption and future satisfaction for one of them. This novel is a glimpse into a world of which few of us are aware, while introducing us to two strong women trying to survive and transcend their expected roles.

Retribution by Jilliane P. Hoffman
Rating: 5 Stars
This is an excellent mystery with fabulous characters.

Mo (maestraw@msn.com)
Mary, Mary by James Patterson
Rating: 4 Stars
This is one of Patterson's best. I really liked the quick tempo. The killer using e-mail was a great twist. I'm looking forward to more with Alex Cross. (Leave Christine out of the plot line, she is tiresome!)

Linda Molitor
Good Grief by Lolly Winston
Rating: 4 Stars
GOOD GRIEF is a humorous approach to a serious topic. Lighthearted reading.

Rachael
Eleven On Top by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 3 Stars
I didn't like this book as much as her previous books. This one felt like a recycled idea from a previous book. It wasnt that original and it didn't blow me away. I hope TWELVE SHARP is better then ELEVEN ON TOP.

Bernie
All Souls by Michael Patrick McDonald
Rating: 4 Stars
ALL SOULS is a very good memoir of growing up poor on Boston's South Side. McDonald doesn't spare the truth about the gangs, drugs, the busing debacle of the early 1970s, and the devastating affect all this had on the people who lived it.

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
Full House by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 5 Stars
Awesome! A fast-paced read. This is the first of five in this series, and I'm totally hooked already. I'm definitely going to be reading the next 4, and will then start in on the other series of books this author has available.

Janice Kind (KINDLEELF@AOL.COM)
Into Temptation by Penny Vincenzi
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the third volume of the Lyton family trilogy..the first being NO ANGEL and the second, SOMETHING DANGEROUS. I love this author's writting style, her characters are believable and endearing.

Janice Kind (KINDLEELF@AOL.COM)
Half-Broken Things by Morag Joss
Rating: 5 Stars
HALF-BROKEN THINGS takes a look into the lives of three broken people --- Jean, a housesitter at the end of a dull career; Steph, 9 months pregnant by an irresponsible jerk; and Michael, who is a thief. Fate brings these three together and one surprise after another ensues.

Virginia Ewbank (vewbanks@gallatin.k12.ky.us)
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Rating: 5 Stars
As a high school reading teacher, I love books, and this particular one is about loving books and their power to create new worlds for us. A student loaned me this to read, and I thank her for it!

Jan Kind (KINDLEELF@AOL.C0M)
The Zahir by Paul Coelho
Rating: 4 Stars
This is not quite as good as THE ALCHEMIST, but it puts deep feelings that sometimes have a way of eluding us until we have lost something.

Nicole Henisse
Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes
Rating: 3 Stars
This was a very entertaining light read. I enjoyed it. It was not the best book I'd ever read but it definitely served as a good escape from reality. The ending was pretty predictable, however.

Mary
The "Red Gloves" Series by Karen Kingsbury
Rating: 5 Stars
In my opinion, all three books were very good. They all have a connection to Christmas and red gloves. MAGGIE'S MIRACLE was one of the sweetest and most touching stories I've read in awhile. It really puts your life into perspective. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Debbie Maskus (delphimo@yahoo.com)
A Redbird Christmas by Fannie Flagg
Rating: 4 Stars
I read the book last year, but listened to audio book read by Fannie Flagg. It was excellent. Her voice brought that Lost River community to life. I adore her characters and the humor of life that can shine through the darkest hour.

K. Gold
The Singing of the Dead by Dana Stabenow
Rating: 5 Stars
All the Kate Shugak books are great page-turners. This one has a parallel plot about a "working girl" during the Alaska gold rush to add even more interest. I'm reading this for the second time and I'm just as into it as the first time.

Judy (joswood@msn.com)
Isabel's Daughter by Judith Hendricks
Rating: 5 Stars
James Avery was abandoned as an infant in a children's foundling home in Colorado. She is mostly raised there, until she runs away when she is 13. Her search for her roots makes a wonderful story. I first heard of this book on Word Of Mouth, and I knew I wanted to read it because most of it takes place in Santa Fe --- a city I love. There is a distinct flavor of the city in the book, and also a very heart-warming story.

Louise Keene (lekeene52@msn.com)
True Women by Janice Woods Windle
Rating: 5 Stars
Beginning in the days of the Alamo, TRUE WOMEN is a wonderful story of the courage and strength of the pioneering women of the great state of Texas!

Nancy in Atlanta
Dispatch by Bentley Little
Rating: 2 Stars
DISPATCH is alright, but it doesn't compare to his earlier books.

Laurie Blum (laurieblum@hotmail.com)
What the Stones Remember by Patrick Lane
Rating: 4 Stars
This is an extraordinary work that is profoundly moving in its immediacy and courage!

Connie Rutter (consurutte@aol.com)
Lie By Moonlight by Amanda Quick
Rating: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this historical romance very much. I loved the characters and I happened to listen to this on CD and the narrator did a great job with the English accent and made true distinctions between the characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical romances. It even brought a tear to my eye in the end.

Shelly Itkin
Lifeguard by James Patterson
Rating: 4 Stars
As ususal, James Patterson comes through and leaves you guessing till the end who did it? It's a fast read and is very enjoyable.

Pamela White
Predator by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 4 Stars
I needed to read earlier books, or the charactors will seem disjointed in the beginning.

Dani
Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong
Rating: 4 Stars
I've read all of the books in this series so far, and this one did not disappoint. Although I prefer the narratives of Alena, the witch and sorcerer perspective is interesting too. Paige is fun to follow and this adventure was exciting and interesting.

Barbara S.
At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks
Rating: 5 Stars
AT FIRST SIGHT is a must read! Nicholas Sparks has a unique way of personalizing a story into something believeable and thought-provoking at the same time. In this story, the newly weds encounter heartbreak, tension and romance. It's truly a delightful read!

Laurie Blum (laurieblum@hotmail.com)
The Summer of Ordinary Ways by Nicole Lea Helget
Rating: 4 Stars
Helget's is a wonderful memoir, a record that is both brave and revelatory; it's one that will linger in the minds of its readers!

Cheryl
Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the first book I've read in the Stephanie Plum series and I am really enjoying this one! Stephanie is a bounty hunter who continually finds herself in the wrong places at the wrong times. There are a lot of hilarious situations in the book, and I find myself laughing out loud at some of the antics. I can't wait to read some of the other books in the series.

Nancy in Atlanta
Comfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a sweet story about forgiveness and love.

Sandra Furlotte
Ice Hunt by James Rollins
Rating: 4 Stars
James Rollins has scored again with ICE HUNT. As an adventure story, it has it all --- prehistoric monsters frozen in a forgotton Russian ice station, a race between Russia and the United States for possession of a mysterious science project, and lots and lots of action. It's a good read for a cold snowy weekend.

Bonnie Margay Burke
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Rating: 5 Stars
This proves that love is more powerful than time; it's as wonderfully romantic as SOMEWHERE IN TIME.

Sandra Furlotte
Wycliffe and the Cycle of Death by W.J. Burley
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a worthy entry in the series by the late W.J. Burley, featuring Chief Superintendent Wycliffe. I have read a number of books in the series and have never been disappointed. The Cornish countryside is as much a character in Burley's books as his human elements. The death of bookseller Matthew Glynn in CYCLE OF DEATH begins a series of events, leading Wycliffe to examine the past history of a bizarre Cornish family. I can only regret that with the death of Mr. Burley in 2002, we can no longer look forward to the next Wycliffe mystery.

Dennis
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Rating: 3 Stars
The book has an Interesting concept, but there is too much detail.

Barb
Ambler Warning by Robert Ludlum
Rating: 2 Stars
This is just not Ludlum. It doesn't read like his books, and I don't know how much of this one he wrote before he died. It isn't very exciting and it's not as fast paced as his usual novels. I've read most of his books and he is one of my favorite "spy" authors.

Janice Mac
The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly
Rating: 3 Stars
In my opinion, this is definitely not his best work --- at least not for the first 160 pages. I put it away three times before I finally got that far. Once you hit that hump, it's great from there to the end.

Madeline
The Colorado Kid by Stephen King
Rating: 5 Stars
An excellent read from one of the greats. It made me miss his older works --- I might just have to go back and reread some favorites!

Madeline
Little Beauties by Kim Addonizio
Rating: 4 Stars
I was blown away by these fully developed, flawed characters. I enjoyed the writing style, the story --- the whole package!

Adele (avivasara@aol.com)
A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon
Rating: 5 Stars
This is newest (6 of 7) in the highly recommended Outlander series. It follows the story of Claire and Jamie Fraser. Claire is a 20th century English woman who gets thrown back in time to 18th century Scotland, where she meets Jamie. Each of the books (OUTLANDER, DRAGONFLY IN AMBER, VOYAGER, DRUMS OF AUTUMN, THE FIERY CROSS, and A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES) --- and don't let the length of the books deter you --- is most excellent and historically accurate (I looked up the events and people). In A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES, Jamie and Claire strive to change history. Does it work? Now I can't wait for the 7th book.

Zena Schulman (LewSch@aol.com)
Jupiter's Bones by Faye Kellerman
Rating: 3 Stars
I thought I was not going to be able to put it down, but I could, except near the end of the book. This is the first Faye Kellerman book that I read.

Lynne Seay (labassist@aol.com)
Chill Factor by Sandra Brown
Rating: 5 Stars
CHILL FACTOR is a romantic mystery set during a blizzard. It's hard to figure out with so many twists and turns --- did he do it? Did she do it?? You have to read to the very end to find out! This is Sandra Brown at her best!

Jacki (j20sanders@yahoo.com)
Standoff by Sandra Brown
Rating: 3 Stars
I went to a garage sale and bought about 12 Sandra Brown books for $1 each and have begun my reading... Written in 2000 and about 200+ pages long, it's a great page-turner that I finished quickly!! I love her books!!!

BJ Deese (zandercage2003@yahoo.com)
Shadow Valley by Gwen Hunter
Rating: 5 Stars
SHADOW VALLEY is a stand-alone mystery/thriller. This is the first book I've read by Gwen Hunter, but it definitely won't be the last. This book is fast-paced, exciting, and beautifully written. I love it, and I highly recommend this book for fans of this genre.

Lynne Seay (Labassist@aol.com)
Marley and Me by John Grogan
Rating: 5 Stars
If you have ever loved a dog, this is the book for you! I laughed and I cried --- John Grogan covers the life of his pet yellow lab, Marley, from the time he meets him as a puppy until the golden years of dog life. Marley misbehaves most of the time and the stories about the misadventures had me in stitches! A wonderful book to give or receive!

Liza
Incendiary by Chris Cleave
Rating: 3 Stars
This is the fictional story of a woman whose husband and son were killed during a terrorist bombing in London. It begins, "Dear Osama," and is a lengthy letter to bin Laden. It is the story of grief and a woman's attempt to carry on (however unsuccessfully).

CJ
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Rating: 4 Stars
This very long book was actually a page-turner all the way through. It was very enjoyable, but the end seemed a bit anticlimatic.

L. Hann

Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice
Rating: 5 Stars
It is an unbelievable pleasure to have such a talented writer switch gears. It gives me (and anyone else who isn't completely enthralled by vampires) a chance to experience the true magic of Rice's writing. She is a storyteller with such a gift of words. I've only read the first three chapters, but already I feel the family's woven connections and the foreboding history that will follow.

Thomas (tomjac0850@charter.net)
Blood is the Sky by Steve Hamilton
Rating: 4 Stars
BLOOD IS THE SKY is a fine novel of mystery by a gifted author. Alex McKnight has been asked by his Ojibwa friend, Vinnie, to find Vinnie's brother Tom in the wilds of Ontario; Tom is overdue from a job as a hunting guide. The search leads to several grisly murders and a desperate fight for survival for Alex and Vinnie.

L. Hann
A Faint Cold Fear by Karin Slaughter
Rating: 4 Stars
An excellent book --- this answered a lot of questions from the last book, but also opened more doors for the next one. You have to read the book before it in order to really enjoy this one.

Patricia Boyle (pboylecharley@hotmail.com)
Ice Hunt by James Rollins

Olivia Joules and The Overactive Imagination by Helen Fielding
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a really quick read about a journalist whose imagination runs amuck. Given the slightest inkling that something odd could be going on, she turns into a super sleuth and still manages to get in other people's way. Two thumbs up for a light fuzzy read.

Tiffany
Velocity by Dean Koontz
Rating: 5 Stars
Again, Dean Koontz puts forth another great effort and labor of love with VELOCITY. I wanted this book as soon as it hit the shelf but wasn't able to get it until recently, and I couldn't put it down! It's well written and definitely a page-turner!

PS Tabor
Predator by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 4 Stars
Carrying on the traditions of Kay Scarpetta; however, the story line sort of falls flat and nothing is ever really accomplished....

PS Tabor (taborp@etsu.edu)
Christ The Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice
Rating: 5 Stars
It was refreshing and surprising to delve into this novel that follows Jesus Christ --- in 1st person narrative --- as he searches for meaning in his existence and why people are so secretive around him. It's a GREAT novel. I hope to see more from Rice along this same subject line.

ry
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
Rating: 4 Stars
A wonderful fantasy....

P. Cavender (tamirenner0131@aol.com)
Ice Hunt by James Rollins
Rating: 5 Stars
This is my second book by James Rollins; the first was EXCAVATIONS, and he doesn't let me down. I love a book that is action packed with characters you care about and a plot that keeps you guessing. Once again, Mr. Rollins succeeds in my opinion. The book takes place on "top of the world," a station established long ago by Russians. But as the book opens up, no one knows about it and the secret that is terrifying and addictive to read about. I've got 3 other books by Mr Rollins ordered and on the way from ebay, and I'm not going to be a happy camper until I've read all of them. If you want a book that scares you silly and keeps you on the edge and reading LONG past midnight, this is the book for you. Try ICE HUNT if you like thrillers --- you won't be disappointed!

Jackie Young (myrtleme@sbcglobal.net)
Night Laws by Jim Michael Hansen

Heather Gill
Superstition by Karen Robards
Rating: 4 Stars
A gripping thriller all the way through the book.

P. Cavender (tamirenner0131@aol.com)
Night Game by Christine Feehan
Rating: 3 Stars
This is the third installment of Feehan's "Ghostwalker" series. It's an action packed book which is unfortunately the best part: the chase, duels between the good guys and the bad, and the details on how the group is, as always, dynamic. What I didn't like is a plot she introduced and basically left hanging for the next book. I don't mind that, but she simply threw out insinuations and never confirmed what she alluded to throughout the book. Another disappointment was the sex scenes between the main couple. Oh, they are hot enough to singe the pages; only I didn't feel the scenes were "love" scenes, they were simply sex scenes that left me cold. In all, it's an OK book, but far beneath her abilities. I hope the fourth book is better or I'm crossing her Ghostwalker series off my list like I did the Dark series.

Heather Gill
Fatal Flaw by William Lashner

A gripping ride all the way through the book with so many twists and turns to shock you.

Heather Gill
Ghost Walk by Heather Graham

I enjoyed this book, and it was a little different from some of her others. Put it on your X-mas Wish List.

JayFr
Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
Rating: 5 Stars
Wow, THE DA VINCI CODE had me going, but this seems better to me --- it's more action packed, and the ending reverses, etc. To the better, no riddles that the reader answers way before the protaganist. To the worse, parts are quite hard to believe.

Dot Lechmanick
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult
Rating: 4 Stars
A very interesting and timely topic.

Talk to the Hand by Lynne Truss
Rating: 5 Stars
In this fantastic and funny book, Lynne Truss writes about how this society no longer says "please" and "thank you," how visitors have no regard, and the lack of customer service in favor of the the request to press buttons.

TALK TO THE HAND is an amazingly true book on how we forget to be civil to each other and treat each other with respect. This is a definite must read!

Green River, Running Red by Ann Rule
Rating: 5 Stars
Another great true crime series book by Ann Rule. This time, the serial killer, Gary Ridgeway, lived within one mile of the author. He attended her book signings and it took Seattle police two decades to catch a man who killed 48 women. Gary Ridgeway was a charming and alluring man who loved to kill women because they made him angry. You won't want to miss reading this book.

The Hunted by L.A. Banks
Rating: 4 Stars
THE HUNTED is the third book in the L. A. Banks Vampire Huntress series. If you enjoy fantasy/horror/sci-fi reads about vampires, then I highly recommend these books. The first one (MINION) was slow, the second book (THE AWAKENING) was more engrossing, and the third book (THE HUNTED) has some awesome and compelling sex scenes! I still need to read THE BITTEN and THE FORBIDDEN before the next book is released in Feb. 2006. Each book gets better and better and I'm looking forward to reading each book in the series.

Also, I'm a big Alex Cross fan so I hope I'm one of the winners of this latest contest, as I would love to win a copy of MARY, MARY by James Patterson!

Blow Fly by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 4 Stars
I had been so disappointed in a few of her latest books (after her infamous moment) that I had not read any of her recent releases until this month. But, I like this book and will read the others. It is interesting, though perhaps a little too fragmented, as she has you follow 4 different points of view within the book. However, BLOW FLY is a good read.

This book is wonderful. It tells of the trials and tribulations, the love and joy of owning a dog --- especially one that never conforms. I laughed and I cried. I think it is the perfect gift for dog lovers but even non dog owners should enjoy.

The Greek's Christmas Baby by Lucy Monroe
Rating: 5 Stars
THE GREEK'S CHRISTMAS BABY is exciting, tragic at times, and a real tear jerker. It's one of Lucy Monroe’s most powerful love stories.

When Eden --- raised by a father who was too busy with work to pay much attention to her --- bumps into the handsome, sexy Aristide Kouros, he not only takes her breath away, he overpowers her with the attention he bestows. Months into their relationship, Eden discovers she is pregnant and they marry. However, Eden sees that Aristide’s personal assistant, Kassandra, also has designs on him.

After their son is born, Eden tries to convince her husband that their marriage is on the brink of separation and tells him she is pregnant again. During this discussion, they have an accident and Astride suffers memory loss and doesn’t remember their marriage or problems. As the story unfolds, Eden is hurt and heartbroken, but decides she must make her marriage work because she loves her husband.

This is such a heart-wrenching and moving story, I suggest you sit down and read it when you can devote your time to finishing the entire story. THE GREEK'S CHRISTMAS BABY is another example of Lucy’s powerful delivery to her reader’s.

Tulia: Race, Cocaine, and Corruption in a Small T by Nate Blakeslee
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a nonfiction account of the roundup and arrest of about 40 people in Tulia, Texas on trumped-up drug charges. Tom Coleman, a one-man task force, was hired to stop the drug traffic in Tulia in the late 1990s. Coleman identified these people, mostly blacks, as the drug traffickers in this small community. He was the only witness to these alleged deals and he had no corroboration at all from any other source. Most of these blacks were given extremely harsh prison sentences. I remember reading about it when it was happening, and this book is a fascinating account. The last 2/3 of it is a cracking good court room drama.

The Lighthouse by P.D. James
Rating: 5 Stars
Mystery… Serious Literature… by an 85- years-young author… THE LIGHTHOUSE is a must read for mystery fans and followers of P.D. James, whose many stories have been filmed for television. This is James's nineteenth book in the series of Commander Adam Dalgliesh and his police investigative staff, including Detective Inspector Kate Miskin, and Sergeant Francis Benton-Smith.

The center stage for a murder is a lighthouse on Combe Island (a fictitious place) off the Cornish coast of England. Owned of late by the Holcombe dynasty, who have established a charitable trust to maintain Combe Island, to be lent out for the purpose of 'a place of rest and seclusion for men in positions of responsibility'. Under consideration by the PM as a prime location for a top-secret international meeting, the killing on the premises halts that meeting. Authorities immediately call on Commander Adam Dalgliesh and his team to investigate.

The victim is a well-known, publicized author Nathan Oliver. Supposedly he was disliked by everyone on the island, allowing for probable, justifiable reasons to kill him. Dalgliesh and his team barely have begun piecing together the author's murder, when another killing occurs. With varied suspects to lead the page-turning onward, James surprises the reader with the identity of the killer, and reeling in a satisfactory ending.

This is my first read of P.D. James's work. It was totally tantalizing and tasty to whet the appetite for more. 'The Lighthouse' will not be my last read of this exceptional author. James's descriptions of the countryside and surroundings in England is superb, the intelligence in writing is obvious in the lucrative plotting, strong characters, and settings only achieved by a skilled writer, and that is signature P.D. James.

P.D. James was in the British Civil Service, including the Police and Criminal Law Departments of Great Britain's Home Office, and a magistrate and governor of the BBC. In 2000 at the time of celebration of her 80th birthday, James published her autobiography -- 'Time to Be in Earnest'. Bestowed with many prizes and honors, she was created Baroness James of Holland Park in 1991.

I love Bourdain's show on the Travel Channel. I enjoy his wry, dry sense of humor. I am not a foodie or a chef, I cannot pronounce most of the dishes he talks about, and have little desire to try any them. I did, however, find this to be a wonderful listen (audiobook). Chef Bourdain has a passion for his art, which comes through loud and clear. I have to say, there is nothing better than an articulate man who can cook!

Liz Shaw
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Rating: 3 Stars
THE JUNGLE is a painfully detailed story of working conditions in the Chicago stockyards at the beginning of the 20th century. This book is credited for changing food safety laws in the US, but to me, the major thrust of the book was working conditions. I docked this 2 stars for the extended two-chapter sermon on socialism at the end of the book.

Rating: 5 Stars
Vince Flynn has done it again. I absolutely loved it. I was really thrown by Anna getting killed and I'm not sure how I feel about what that bodes for Mitch's future. The Bishop in the West Wing by Andrew Greeley
Rating: 1 Stars
One star might be a generous rating for this totally trite and boring book. I have tried this author’s work before and had the same reaction. His cutesy Irish and weak predictable story line makes it difficult to get through even the first chapter. I persevered this time to see if it improved; it did not. I wonder if his “success” in the literary field is simply due to the novelty of a priest writing fiction. The title is the only thing engaging about this very poor offering.

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire
Rating: 5 Stars
This book does not have the beautiful literary descriptions that I so enjoyed in WICKED; however, the story is told in plainer language perhaps more fitting to the Dutch setting. With the ugly stepsister as the heroine of this retelling of the Cinderella story, one gains totally different sympathies. And what a surprise it was to have the final chapter in a completely different voice! This is a book to be treasured.

MISSING MOM takes place over a one-year period in the lives of two sisters after the sudden death of their mother, as they come to terms with their grief and with the conflict in their relationship with one another. Very compelling.

Gerry (GerryD8784@aol.com)
At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks
Rating: 2 Stars
This continuation of the story from TRUE BELIEVER has Jeremy and Lexie preparing to get married, awaiting the birth of their baby daughter, and dealing with issues of where they will live and who makes what sacrifices. It's too slow-moving in the early chapters, and overall, is less enjoyable than its predecessor.

The Color of the Law by Mark Gimenez
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a riveting novel detailing the unique and troubling aspects of Texas justice --- Dallas style. THE COLOR OF THE LAW is a delightful debut novel by Mr. Gimenez.

Bonnie Gluhanich
Maybe a Miracle by Brian Strause
Rating: 3 Stars
MAYBE A MIRACLE is an intriguing novel that falters a little at the end. The writing was a little too Salingeresque.

Rita
The English Teacher by Lily King
Rating: 4 Stars
I think the strength of this book is the transformation it makes in your feeling for the main character. Yes, the analogy is a bit obvious but also, a very unique way of thinking about the resolution of a serious, emotional problem.

Pamela White
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
Rating: 5 Stars
Great suspense historical fiction.

Sherri Reimold
The Answer Man by Roy Johansen
Rating: 4 Stars
The book has had many interesting twists. Ken Parker, the main character, is trying to make enough money to help out his dying brother and keep afloat by giving lie detector tests. His life becomes exciting when a very attractive attorney makes him a very attractive offer. It's the first book by this author that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last.

Carol (BREEZYWRITER@AOL.COM)
Vanishing Acts by Jodi Piccoult
Rating: 5 Stars
Picoult is one of my favorite authors --- this latest novel is a little more unusual than her others, but just as enjoyable. It was a great story and was well-written, as usual.

Doris From Beautiful British Columbia (dglg@telus.net)
Stealing With Style by Emyl Jenkins

This is a nice, easy read that will keep you entertained, while teaching you about the "antique world."

Dolora Schlesinger (Dolora647@aol.com)
Stone of Light: Nefer the Silent by Christian Jacq
Rating: 4 Stars
I loved it so much I purchased the rest of the set as well as the Ramses set. They give you a sense of history while weaving a story.

Heather L Grunstra
Creepers by David Morrell
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this suspense book. The plot, the description, and the characters were well-developed and intriguing. I couldn't put it down!

Nancy B.
The Simon Shaw series by Sarah R. Shaber
Rating: 4 Stars
Shaber is a new author recommended by the Annual "Cape Fear Crime Festa." The series is based in North Carolina with interesting historically based information. This new genre, the forensic historian, is great!

Teri
Final Payments by Mary Gordon
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this 1978 novel. FINAL PAYMENTS is an insightful look at love, the death of a parent, friendships, and religion. The characters are realistic, and the story line is believable.

All I Did Was Ask by Terry Gross
Rating: 5 Stars
ALL I DID WAS ASK was filled with wonderful interviews by Terry Gross of NPR Radio's "Fresh Air" --- they reveal interesting insight to interesting people in Terry's direct and to-the-point fashion. A tremendous read!

Gerald's Game by Stephen King
Rating: 5 Stars
I loved this book! It was a really good read, but then the end was so shocking.... I loved it!

Bobbie Neal (bneal2k@bellsouth.net)
Soldier Poet by Valderia D. Norris
Rating: 4 Stars
I recently read this book of spoken word... it was awesome!!! The writer is new but I think she's going places. I bought the book from amazon.com, where you can read some of the poetry and the reviews.

Donna
Teacher Man by Frank Mc Court
Rating: 5 Stars
Highly recommended reading --- McCourt's work is both entertaining and insightful. I'd rate this right up with ANGELA'S ASHES. It would be an especially great Christmas gift for any teacher, current or retired, as many of the challenges related in the book have happened to those of us who have spent time in the classroom.

Harriet (hstay@direcway.com)
Lost by Michael Robotham
Rating: 5 Stars
Credible characters, clever plot, absorbing read, gripping finale all sound like I've taken these from the cover of the book. Nope. I put these in my notebook so I'll be sure and pick up Robotham's next title.

This was his second mystery and I can't recommend enough that you read his debut first: The Suspect. Not only equally accomplished, but the author has cleverly paired them by using some of the same characters, then reversing roles of who becomes the protagonist. The author does this better than I am doing explaining it.

In The Suspect clinical psychologist Joe O' Loughlin tells his story. He is accused of the very murder Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz asked for Joe's assistance in solving.

In LOST it is Inspector Ruiz who narrates and who, from the beginning, has lost his memory. Not completely, just the near past events. But memory isn't the only thing lost or has vanished. A little girl, Mickey, disappeared some years ago. Ruiz helped convict the murderer and send him to prison. Why is it then that Ruiz seems convinced that his memory loss is tied in with the finding of Mickey. Alive.

The setting for both books is England. The author, however, lives in Australia. Robotham is a former journalist and Lost was voted the Crime Book of the Year 2005 by the Crime Writers' Association of Australia. The BBC has already bought the rights to The Suspect for a feature-length drama series to begin in 2006. I bought first editions from England, but The Suspect should be out in the US and Canada by now. Let's hope!

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
Rating: 4 Stars
This book, about the sudden death of Didion's husband John, is beautifully written and personally intense. Didion, in language that is deeply personal and honest, tells how John's death caused her to think "magically." I highly recommend it.

Pat Miller (pudgypb@aol.com)
At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks
Rating: 4 Stars
This book was a sequel to his last one. It was kind of slow in the beginning, but it picked up. This wasn't one of his best books, but it was okay.

Gerry (GerryD8784@aol.com)
Goodnight Nobody by Jennifer Weiner
Rating: 3 Stars
A too-ironic tone and an ending that came from out of nowhere put me off and detracted from this story of a Connecticut mother and housewife who discovers that an acquaintance was murdered. I loved GOOD IN BED, and enjoyed her next two books too, but this one was disappointing in comparison.

Gerry (GerryD8784@aol.com)
Wickett's Remedy by Myla Goldberg
Rating: 5 Stars
Goldberg’s latest is written in an unusual style that took time to get used to, but was well worth the effort. Her heroine, Lydia Wickett, is a young woman from the poor Irish community of “Southie” in turn-of-the century Boston. The novel tells parallel stories of her involvement in the development of a patent medicine and of the 1918 influenza epidemic, both fascinating tales full of interesting and sympathetic characters.

RY
The Lost City by Clive Cussler
Rating: 2 Stars
This was not his best effort.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
Rating: 5 Stars
I lost my husband much the same way 18 months ago. I can completely relate to all of her emotions. It's as though she wrote the book for me.

Amanda Stepro (Mandy41283@yahoo.com)
Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the best book yet in Reichs' ongoing Temperance Brennan series. This book is filled with forensic investigations, personal relationships, and lots of gritty body recovery. This is a great series to read if you are a fan of the CSI shows.

Amanda Stepro (Mandy41283@yahoo.com)
The Divide by Nicholas Evans
Rating: 4 Stars
Though the book started off slowly, THE DIVIDE quickly sped up and left a lasting impression. This is a story of a perfect daughter who is changed drastically in a short period of time. The subplot of her parents' struggles in life adds perfect substance. This is a very good book.

Amanda Stepro (Mandy41283@yahoo.com)
A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Penultimate Pe by Lemony Snicket
Rating: 3 Stars
I was very disappointed in the 12th installment of the Beaudelaire orphan series. This book takes place over the course of 24 hours and at only one location. Unlike any of the other books, this one was quite boring. Longer than any other and with almost no action. Very disappointing.

Gerry (GerryD8784@aol.com)
Pomegranate Soup by Marsha Mehran
Rating: 4 Stars
This heart-warming story of three sisters who flee from Iran at the dawn of the revolution, and find a new home in a small town in Ireland. They open a small café, which offers the added delight of introducing the reader to a several delicious-sounding examples of Persian cuisine. Very realistic descriptions and well-defined characters make this book especially engaging.

China (BlondeFairy1975@aol.com)
A Feast of Crows by George R.R. Martin
Rating: 5 Stars
Excellent fantasy series. He saved the best for last.

Amanda Stepro (Mandy41283@yahoo.com)
Bee Season by Myla Goldberg
Rating: 4 Stars
I was skeptical of this book at first, being that it is about spelling bees, but wanted to read it before seeing the movie. This book is EXCELLENT! Besides spelling, family relationships are a key role in telling the story of a little girl who comes of age in a very short amount of time. There are all sorts of subplots that add to the intrigue this novel provokes. I would definitely recommend this book!

Lisa writes this novel very well and I could hardly wait to turn the pages. Sometimes, I really wished that I had taken a speed reading course!

Dot
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult
Rating: 4 Stars
The book contains unusual but timely subject matter. The dialogue is very natural, the characters seem like friends and family members.

Rhoda MacMaster (Tiggi47@aol.com)
The Divide by Nicholas Evans
Rating: 4 Stars
THE DIVIDE is an interesting book. I loved Evans's other books, but this one was not up to his usual writing. I did like the last half better than the first.

Pat from Sugar Land
Lipstick Jungle by Candace Bushnell
Rating: 2 Stars
In some ways this Chick Lit has it all...Money, Power, Beauty, Sex and some Love. Unfortunately, in spite of the glamor, it still dragged. I dont know who I despised the most...the self-absorbed women or the self-serving males!

Sandy Sherwood (jasscs@aol.com)
Mary, Mary by James Paterson
Rating: 5 Stars
I could not put the book down! It is a great read and is so interesting. I can't wait for the next book to see where Alex goes from here. A Great Book!

Rachael
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Rating: 2 Stars
I read this book with my book club recently. The writing style flows well, but the story left me disapointed. Some people may like this book, but it left me with TOO many questions unanswered. If the author had elaborated on the topic more, I may have liked it better.

Jeanne Sheats (catslady5@aol.com)
Guardian Angel by Julie Garwood
Rating: 4 Stars
The second of a 4 book series; the first --- THE LION'S LADY --- was a definite 5. This historical romance with suspense so far has a 4 but I'm only halfway through.

Reva Wamsley (prwamsley@adelphia.net)
L is for Lawless by Sue Grafton
Rating: 4 Stars
I always enjoy the books from this series. They are about a female private eye. In this one, what starts out as a favor for a friend ends up taking her across the country.

Karen in South Fl.
Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner
Rating: 4 Stars
Even though I am a grandmother, this story of four young mothers is one close to my heart. Their combined story of life, motherhood, and marriage is real. But even more admirable is their friendship and support, despite their differences in background and lifestyle. For me, this is a feel-good book!

Sharon Halliday
Flying Through Midnight by John T. Halladay
Rating: 5 Stars
This is a true and exciting story of flying over Laos during the Viet Nam conflict when the Nixon White House was denying we were there. The pilots and crew had to fly unmarked darkened planes over treacherous mountains. This is a harrowing story of a forced landing in enemy territory. It relates closely to the release today, of previously classifed Nixon documents showing the same coverup surrounding the US involvement in Cambodia as well.

Light on Snow by Anita Shreve
Rating: 5 Stars
while flying from Pennsylvania back home to Southern Utah this week, I accomplished not only knitting a complete scarf but also reading the last half of a wonderful book by Anita Shreve called LIGHT ON SNOW. Even though I've never been inspired to read anything written by Anita Shreve, this being the first of her novels that i've read, I was completly at awe with each quickly read page. I was, however, a little bit disappointed at the end of the book. I thought it would be much better than it was. Over all, however, I give her all five stars and, in fact, I started reading a second Anita Shreve book today: THE PILOT'S WIFE.

Grievous Sin by Faye Kellerman
Rating: 5 Stars
I was rereading this one --- I had to because Faye Kellerman hasn't published any new Peter and Rina books in a while. Her new novel is good, though, just not Pete Decker and Rina Lazarus.

Sandy Sherwood (jasscs@aol.com)
Fifty Degrees Below by Kim Stanley Robinson

I lost interest by the end. It's not all I expected, but it's still a good book. I will look forward to the next one.

Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
