David (chippermoon@aol.com)
Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris
Rating: 5 Stars
The small town intricacies, the village squabbles and petty rivalries all so well portrayed in her earlier novels, have taken on a new intensity. GENTLEMAN & PLAYERS is a darker, often disturbing novel, that justifying its length --- 509 pages --- leads to some surprises and one or two big shocks towards the end.

It tells the story of a private English school, St Oswalds. `Speccy` Snyde is bullied at the Sunny Bank comprehensive school and desperately yearns to become a member of the proud St. Oswalds. The realisation of this ambition plunges St. Oswalds into a nightmare of occuring events, each leading up to an exciting and suspensful conclusion.

Kingston by Starlight by Christopher John Farley

Fiction based on the lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Female pirates of the West Indies, circa 1700.

Kellie Smith (acountkel@bellsouth.net)
Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan
Rating: 2 Stars
This was a tough book to get through. I did not like it at all. It's told from the perspective of a dead woman. That should have been my first clue. I never could bond with the characters and I thought the book was long winded and hard to get into. I couldn't wait to finish it.

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
Rating: 4 Stars
I was like the only person who hadn't read this book yet! I am only about 150 pages into it, but I am liking it.

Christy Hawkes (hawkes@citlink.net)
Nervous by Zane
Rating: 4 Stars
An engrossing and fascinating story about a woman with multiple personality disorder. This was my first read by this author but I will definitely be reading more.

Sherri Reimold
The Chimney Sweeper's Son by Barbara Vine
Rating: 2 Stars
I just finished this book. I guess I enjoy the suspense more, because this story seemed long in many areas. I didn't come away from it feeling good because one person caused so much loss in another person's life willingly. The main character knew his situation, but his wife wanted a nice life and thought this was what she was going to have. Given the time period, it was hard for her to do much about it. He was self-righteous about his intelligence and didn't deserve to be ---- he didn't have any higher education than his suffering wife, whom he constantly demeaned. He was also selfish with his children. I guess THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER'S SON was a literary (author not cowboy) 'Brokeback Mountain' but I felt sorry for the people he hurt. It was all about his sexuality and the hell with hers. He even deprived his daughters of their mother with his own needs and they ended up having a hard time relating to others as a result of his wanting to be everything to them. The slowness of the story made me lose the mystery of it in the constancy of his selfishness.

Susan Jensen
New Mercies by Sandra Dallas
Rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this story about Nora Bondurant, a newly divorced woman, who discovers that an aunt Nora never knew has left her a crumbling mansion in Natchez, Mississippi. Nora travels to the Southern town to set her affairs in order, never intending to become so absorbed in the townspeople and her own family history. She discovers that everyone, including herself, has something to hide. NEW MERCIES is an interesting, engrossing novel.

Connie Rutter (consurutte@aol.com)
The Stranger House by Reginald Hill
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a very interesting book about Sam Flood, an Australian girl who went to England to find out about her grandmother who had been sent to an orphanage in Australia. She was pregnant when she arrived, but her son was adopted and didn't know that and thought a priest had made her pregnant. In England, Sam tries to discover why anyone would send her grandmother to Australia to an orphanage. Sam is a mathematics student and only thinks in logical turns, so when she meets up with a fellow who's going to be a priest and sees ghosts, it is more than her logical mind can accept. However, they do become friends and Sam does find out about her grandmother, even though no one in the little village wants her to know anything. There were a lot of big words in this book and I wish that the author would have spared us those, but other than that, I thought it was a very good novel. I don't think I would really classify as a true mystery though.

Jackie is at her sexiest best! I could not put it down and I read it in 2 days.

State of Fear by Michael Crichton
Rating: 1 Stars
I used to wait with anticipation for this author's next book. However, STATE OF FEAR was nothing more than the author's vitriolic rant against the people trying to protect our earth, while making heroes of the greedy, self-serving corporations bent on taking what they want, no matter the cost to others. He portrays people concerned with the environment as ignorant, dishonest dissemblers --- funny, those are the very traits they are trying to fight in the political/corporate elite who are destroying our planet. I was angry that I had paid $8 to read his personal radical right diatribe. There was little story, it was mostly long monologues of Crichton pushing his agenda, trying to seed the idea that global warming isn't real - shades of our ignoramus president. I had always thought him intelligent --- but obviously he is missing some important component, or is in some way in bed with someone in the destructive, radical political right. He has evidently decided to use his books to ram his agendas down people's throats by disguising them as 'stories." Fool me once... I won't shell out $8 for another of his books.

Katherine Stephens Raleigh, NC
For Laci by Sharon Rocha
Rating: 4 Stars
We have heard so much about her death, so it was nice to read about her life. My heart goes out to Sharon for what she went through once more to write this book.

Ann Fennell
Blow Fly by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 1 Stars
I used to avidly wait for Patricia Cornwell's next Scarpetta book, but BLOW FLY was grimly pessimistic with horrid depressing characters in a seedy world. I read less than half of it, it made me feel so bad. From the reviews I've read, PREDATOR and TRACE are more of the same. I wonder what happened to this author I used to love to read?

Sharron
The Coal Tattoo by Silas House
Rating: 5 Stars
Silas House just gets better and better. This is the middle story of the three books he has written, however, they don't need to be read in any order. Two sisters, as different as night and day, and their struggle to have healthy relationships, despite being orphaned and living on the side of a coal mountain in KY. House knows his surroundings, writes from a woman's point of view, and does it well.

The Grace That Keeps This World by Tom Bailey

It was a little slow in the beginning but all of us in our book group agreed that it was worth the wait. This was Bailey's first novel and we look forward to seeing more from him in the future.

Priscilla Escajeda
Light on Snow by Anita Shreve
Rating: 4 Stars
Great reading --- the story keeps your interest.

Sandra Furlotte
The Red Power Murders by Thomas King
Rating: 5 Stars
At the end of THE RED POWER MURDERS, the main character, Thumps DreadfulWater, says “...maybe in the end, a good story was the best anyone could do.” Thomas King has certainly accomplished that in his new novel. THE RED POWER MURDERS is a delightful book from start to finish. The plot is well crafted with revelations popping up at regular intervals that advance the story of Lucy Kettle --- a Native activist who disappeared in the 1970s. Perhaps the best thing about this book is the language; it is spare and uncluttered with fulsome descriptions that do nothing to advance the story.

The main character, Thumps DreadfulWater, is a Cherokee living in the small town of Chinook where very little happens. So, when the head of the Red Power Movement --- Noah Ridge --- comes to town to promote his new book, Chinook sits up and takes notice. A couple of murders in the town drags an unwilling Thumps into service as a Deputy Sheriff. The supporting cast of characters are skillfully drawn, but we only get to know them in the context of their part in the plot, another example of the sparing use of details in the novel.

This is an excellent novel and I would highly recommend it.

Sandra Furlotte
Resistance by Anita Shreve
Rating: 2 Stars
RESISTANCE is not one of Anita Shreve's best efforts. The story is rather mundane and has nothing unique to distinguish it from many, many others. The only feature that stands out is the setting. It is set in Belguim in 1943-44 against the background of World War II and the resistance movement in occupied Europe.

However, I believe that Ms. Shreve's books that are set in contemporary times are better. Don't waste your time on this one, but do read some of her other novels. She is worth the time.

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Rating: 5 Stars
Wonderful! This book touched on so many emotional levels --- happiness, sadness, anger, etc. It's a beautifully written story that helps remind us all that it's not the color of the skin that matters, but what's inside that truly counts.

Mary Schreiner
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan
Rating: 5 Stars
This was a wonderful book. Anyone born in the 1950s will appreciate it even more. Terry Ryan's story of growing up in a very large family, with a mother who always managed to see the good in everything, is a wonderful read. Once I started I had a hard time putting it down. If you ever catch yourself taking for granted the things you have or wishing for more, read this book to get a new appreciation of the things in your life.

Mary Schreiner
Invitation to Provence by Elizabeth Adler
Rating: 5 Stars
This was the first book I had read by Elizabeth Adler, but I look forward to others. She gave beautiful descriptions in her book of Provence. It made me want to visit. She also mixed just the right amount of romance and suspense that made this book hard to put down.

Thomas (tomjac0850@charter.net)
Forever Odd by Dean Koontz
Rating: 4 Stars
I have been a Dean Koontz fan for many years and have read just about everything he has written. FOREVER ODD is a sequel to ODD THOMAS, which came out a couple years ago. For some reason, I don't recall much about it, except for the character, Odd Thomas (his real name), who can see ghosts and speak to them. In this sequel, Odd finds Dr. Wilbur Jessup murdered and his son, Danny, who is one of Odd's best friends, disappeared and presumed kidnapped by the killers. Odd's search for Danny takes the reader through a harrowing search of an abandoned and haunted Indian Casino in the desert, where Danny is being held by three very evil psycopaths. One problem I had with this book was that it took about 100 pages to get into the real meat of the story. Once it got going, it was a real page-turner.

Susan De Feo
Light on Snow by Anita Shreve
Rating: 3 Stars
Light reading... It's the story of family loss and another's mistake.

Susan De Feo
Night Fall by Nelson DeMille
Rating: 3 Stars
Easy reading from an author who doesn't take himeslf too seriously.

Sally B., San Antonio TX
Goodnight Nobody by Jennifer Weiner
Rating: 2 Stars
2.5 stars. Abridged audiobook read by Emily Skinner. Even though it was abridged, it did consist of 5 CDs.

A city girl tries to adjust to suburban life with her husband and 3 kids. She gets involved in trying to solve the murder of one of her neighbors. This was a pretty good read, but the story was strictly chick lit with a mystery thrown in.

Sandra Furlotte
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling
Rating: 4 Stars
I am sure that many adults use their children as an excuse to buy the Harry Potter books. They are truly delightful works and exhibit so much imagination.

THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE was well worth the wait. It is the best book of the series as far a I am concerned because it deals with Harry Potter's coming of age. I look forward to where J.K. Rowling takes the young adult Harry in her next book.

Mario
Slow Man by J. M. Coetzee
Rating: 3 Stars
How high one rates this novel may well rest on how enjoyable and relevant one rates the introduction and maintenance of Elizabeth Costello as a character within. A sixty-something one time French immigrant to Australia, now Australian fellow experiences a traumatic accident. Such experiences are always challenging on a number of levels. We expect that. If you are --- no matter your age --- young and vibrant, this novel may be irrevalent to you. If you are a sixty something who is looking forward to some measure of aloneness or loneliness you may find the challenges explored in this novel not only immediately interesting, but thought provoking. SLOW MAN is worthy of consideration for a senior's reading group. I'll rate it 3 1/2 stars.

Christy Hawkes (hawkes@citlink.net)
Twenty-Seven Bones by Jonathan Nasaw
Rating: 5 Stars
A shocking and engrossing thriller from the same author as THE GIRLS HE ADORED. Agent Pender is out of retirement and back on the case in this tale of a husband-and-wife serial killer team. You won't be able to put this book down until the very last page.

Karla Hodde
Blessed is the Busybody by Emilie Richards
Rating: 4 Stars
A sweet mystery cozy with funny and likable characters. I enjoyed the story throughout, even though I didn't expect to.

Dena
Kiss Me Annabel by Eloisa James
Rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed Annabel's story a lot. It was fun and sweet, with a touch of romance. All in all, a good combination. It's the second book in her series of 4 sisters, but it stands on its own very well.

Barb
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
Rating: 4 Stars
Although this is a story of how and why someone changed his sex, I felt it was as much a story of how an immigrant family from Greece adjusted to their life in America and the impact that had on their children.

Barb
First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung
Rating: 5 Stars
This was the remarkable story of a young girl's survival in war time Vietnam. I also learned more about how that war affected and impacted the people of that nation.

Karen Barash (kkbarash@aol.com)
Love and Other Impossible Pursuits by Ayelet Waldman
Rating: 4 Stars
I was reading this interesting novel which focuses on the relationship between a woman and her five-year-old stepson. The novel also deals with her relationship with her relatively new husband and her parents, as well as her coping with the loss of her newborn. I didn't realize how much the book had touched me until the tears were running down my face.

Tish
Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz
Rating: 4 Stars
Dean Koontz does it again! He combines humor with a thriller --- one moment I am laughing out loud, the next I am holding my breath! This time, he writes about a bad clown and a baker's family. The son of the baker is told about 5 days in his life that are going to be very bad and they are!!!

Gary Murray (gshadow@adelphia.net)
Lifeguard by James Patterson
Rating: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed this fast-moving story.

Connie Rutter (consurutte@aol.com)
Protect And Defend by Richard North Patterson
Rating: 5 Stars
This was a long book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a lot of courtroom drama about the case of a 15-year-old girl facing her father in court in order to get an abortion for her baby that has no brain. This case ends up in the Supreme Court. PROTECT AND DEFEND is also about a Judge who is nominated to the Supreme Court by a new President. It explains how that process works and the extent to which they investigate you. I loved the dynamics of this story, and even though it was quite lengthy, it didn't appear that way to me. I could hardly wait to listen to the next CD. You learned all about the individuals --- what it took to get where they ended up, and the secrets they had or didn't have because of the public's right to know, and what is considered privacy or not.

Annette B.
Sunstroke by Jesse Kellerman
Rating: 3 Stars
I've read all of Jonathan and Fay Kellerman's books, so when I saw that their son had written one I couldn't wait to go out and buy it. While it is a mystery, it was nice to see that Jesse has a style all his own. SUNSTROKE was very enjoyable and I'm interested to see what he comes up with next time.

Ordinary Heroes by Scott Turow
Rating: 5 Stars
ORDINARY HEROES is about a slacker who never had much respect for his parents. Then, when his father dies, he discovers letters from WWII. He decides to find out about what his father did during the war. This is a great story told from the vet's journals of the battles and what the slacker discovers from the lawyer who represented his father during a court martial. Put it at the top of your list!

Annette B.

Cell by Stephen King
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the kind of book that keeps me reading Stephen King. It was far different from the "Dark Tower" series. This brings in the modern world, and the book made me want to keep on reading until the very end so I could find out what happened --- if Clay would ever find his son, Johnny.

Judy (joswood@msn.com)
Killer Instinct by Joseph Finder
Rating: 5 Stars
I was recently privileged to receive an Advance Reader Copy of this new book by Joseph Finder, author of COMPANY MAN, PARANOIA, and others. This book is not due out until May 16, but you should definitely watch out for it. Jason Steadman is a sales manager of a big electronics firm in the Boston area. He meets a tow truck driver named Kurt Semko when he has an accident with his car. The two of them bond quickly, and Jason gets Kurt a job as a security officer at Entronics, his electronics firm. Soon Kurt is paving the way, behind the scenes, for Jason to rise higher in the corporate ladder. But, the methods he uses to help Jason are often dangerous and criminal. However, when Jason tries to have Kurt fired, Kurt turns on him and now the young executive's life is in danger from his former friend. The book is compelling and a page-turner. There is a nice plot twist at the end that cannot be predicted. Again, watch for this book out in May. You'll love it.

The Jasmine Trade by Denise Hamilton
Rating: 4 Stars
This debut novel featuring Eve Diamond, an investigative reporter, focuses on the phenomenon of "parachute kids" (the rich Asian teens who are left to their own devices in California while their parents live and work in Hong Kong). She contrasts this world with the destitute young Asian immigrants who are forced to live in virtual sexual slavery --- hence the term "jasmine trade". This is a real eye-opener.

Cell by Stephen King
Rating: 1 Stars
I was very disappointed with this book. It seemed to go on and on and on. I lost interest about half way through. I did finish it by skimming instead of reading. It was very predictable --- I knew the ending before I was a third of the way finished. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Karen Gold
Most Wanted by Michele Martinez
Rating: 5 Stars
I got this book by answering fast when Book Reporter offered copies to the first people to respond. It came on Thursday, it's now Saturday and I just finished. Of course, Friday, I had to go to work.

MOST WANTED has a young federal prosecutor searching for a psychopath and is surrounded by corruption. It also has some romance, though I could have done with less of the love triangle. I suspected the wrong person almost till the end. It's a winner.

The River of Doubt by Candice Millard
Rating: 4 Stars
I just finished this book about Pres. Teddy Roosevelt's journey down a river in the Amazon after his presidental defeat as the Progressive Party's candidate. I'm not a huge nonfiction reader, but was fascinated by the whole story and the living conditions of the time: the journey and expedition (who would want to do it), Roosevelt with his my accomplishments and challenges, and the natives who would help with the expedition.

Teresa Steinert (steinertt@aol.com)
The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 4 Stars
I'm loving it. It's a bit different since it is interspersed with a graphic novel that the father character in the book is writing. The drama all centers on a date rape of a 14 year old and how her father handles his own dark demons when his little girl is violated.

Dolly Knickerbocker (dollyk@mad.scientist.com)

Rating: 4 Stars
HITLER YOUTH is a Newbery Honor book for this year. The author gives fascinating details of some of the youth who followed Hitler --- and even more fascinating details of some of the youth who resisted and ultimately paid with their lives. Many of the stories are from first-hand accounts that the author obtained by interviewing survivors.

Second Glance by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 4 Stars
As always, Jodi's characters pull you in to their lives and you feel like you are right there with them. However, I am finding this book just a bit dragging --- not like her usual "page-turners" that you never want to end. I'ts a bit far out for my liking, but it's still a great story. One can never go wrong with Jodi Picoult.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

A griping story of two sisters: the elder, Kate, has leukemia. Amy, two years younger, was conceived specifically to be a body part donar for Kate. How mother, father, brother and the two sisters cope as the sisters grow into their teens and Amy sues for the right to refuse to give up a kidney to save her sister's life. Chapters are written from various family members' points of view so the reader travels with each one as they struggle with the issues. A terrific book.

A wonderful memoir written by Habitat for Humanity's Africa/Middle East correspondent. From 1997-2002, the author spent six months a year living in Africa and covering the work of the low-cost housing organization. She takes into the hills of Burundi to meet a pair of 'orphan head of households,' builds with leprosy survivors in Uganda, spends the night with homeowners inside former black townships in South Africa, and gives a hilarious account of the Great Sychronized Swimming Challenge. For anyone contemplating working or volunteering overseas or anyone wanting an unusual travel book, this is the one for you.

Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice
Rating: 3 Stars
This is the first-person narrative of the young boy, Jesus, as his family returns to Nazareth from their seven-year exile to Alexandria, Egypt. OUT OF EGYPT incorporates the New Testament writings on the birth of Jesus, the annunciation, the three magi, the slaughter of the innocents, and Jesus with the teachers of the temple. The book also has a lot of Jewish/Roman history. The narrative is a bit choppy --- almost childlike --- hence, the thoughts are choppy; there is no fluidity. Otherwise, this is a good story.

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
Rating: 3 Stars
This book started out very interesting, but I put it down and lost interest after page 200. I already knew the ending thanks to Oprah spoiling it for me on her show. Also, because of all the media hype about this book being false, it was hard for me to enjoy it as much. I will go back and finish it eventually. It is interesting, but I suggest borrowing it from a friend or the libary rather then buying it.

Rating: 4 Stars
THE MOURNING SEXTON has an unusual hero --- a disgraced lawyer who is out of prison and has found Judaism. The dour title and dark cover art are obstacles this book must overcome.

The Grifter's Game by Lawrence Block
Rating: 4 Stars
This was my first Hard Case Crime book and the ending really haunted me for a couple of days. I enjoyed the book and it reminded me of the old-time PI books that I have read in the past. It was originally titled MONA, who is a key character in the book. At first you think she is a dumb blonde, but as time goes on, you see how she was a manipulator. This book isn't about the good guys; so you better like getting inside the head of a bad guy. I did enjoy this 200-page book and plan to read some more of these Hard Case Crime books.

Rating: 4 Stars

Mary, Mary by James Patterson
Rating: 5 Stars
I had become disenchanted with the last few "Alex Cross" novels and almost bypassed this one; however, I decided to give it one last try. I didn't have a clue not only to "Who Done It,"but to what was going to happen next --- every time I thought I did, I was entirely wrong. A real page turner the closer I got to the end. In addition, Patterson closes several issues he had left hanging in previous books. Patterson is back on my must-read list.

Crescent Moon by Alden R. Carter
Rating: 4 Stars
I wanted a short book to read and found this little gem buried away. It was even signed by the author (which wasn't too surprising, since it is set in the town where I live). The story takes place in 1912, in the waning days of the lumber industry. There is no real plot; it is a tale of young Jeremy Callahan who is growing up and watching the old days pass on, along with the people and their ways. Entwined in the tale are the final pack of timber flowing down the Chippewa River (one log which will be used by Jeremy's Uncle Mac to carve a beautiful statue of an Indian Maiden, Crescent Moon), the hard and dangerous work at the logging mill, and the greed and danger involved with any attempt to unionize the workers.

Susan Jensen
Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons
Rating: 4 Stars
This short novel is the heartbreaking but powerful story of Ellen, a young girl with a difficult life. She struggles through the death of her mother, abuse from her father, and neglect from nearly everyone. Despite it all, Ellen shows incredible spunk and determination. A depressing, but eloquent little novel.

A Host of Dragons by Alan F. Troop
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the 4th book in Troop's ongoing "Dragon DelaSangre" series, and what a good book it was. Normally I don't do "fantasy," but this series has had me hooked from book one. Two thumbs up for another well-written, fast-paced adventure. A definite must read.

The Perfect Pitch, The Biography of Roger Owens by Daniel S. Green
Rating: 5 Stars
I normally read fantasy, like the "Harry Potter" series, but I have to give credit to new author Daniel S. Green for making my transition from fantasy to biography non-fiction a magical one.

I enjoyed this moving biography so much, because it has a lot more than sports. It has history and emotion and miracles of survival and how a real family had to deal with one thing after another, including mental breakdown, poverty, foster home abuse, a holdup and murder attempted on Roger's father, a Baptist minister and also Roger's accident while in the National Guard. I had heard of the "Hukilau Song" but I had no idea Roger's uncle wrote it and was a TV/radio singer many years ago. Overall, an unforgettable biography.

The Eight by Katherine Neville
Rating: 4 Stars
Well, maybe 4.5 stars. This is a 20-year-old bestseller, billed as perfect for people who liked THE DA VINCI CODE. I'm wrapped up in the story, that's for sure. There are three or four major plots and any number of pesky little clues. One thread of the story winds through the French Revolution, and here my ignorance of history really shows. I've heard of Tallyrand, Richelieu, and Mme. de Stael, but have less than a clue why they were important. Still, it isn't stopping me from following the story.

Kathy Kasten (kkasten911@yahoo.com)
The Stewards of South Beach by James Quarto
Rating: 1 Stars
The premise sounded very promising: the second coming of Jesus who chooses twelve men with the same names as the original apostles to be his stewards and save mankind. At this point the book becomes tiresome and repetitious. There is no depth to the characters and the dialogue feels forced. Near the end when God's wrath is delivered, the story picks up considerably, but that doesn't last more than a few pages.

Conspiracy of Fools: A True Story by Kurt Eichenwald
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the best of several books I've read concerning the misadventures at Enron. It's based on interviews with over 100 participants, reviews of thousands of authentic documents, and extensive investigation by the New York Times staff. While quite factual, it reads like a novel. Kurt Eichenwald has crafted a very informative and interesting book, that is most timely to read now while the trial of Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling is in progress.

This is the sequel to WHEN THE WIND BLOWS and I didn't enjoy it quite as much. The kids who are half human and half bird, but I had a bit of a problem with some parts that were not fully explained until later in the book. That was a bit too much for me. I do wonder if there will be a third in the series, considering the ending of this one. I would definitely read it if there was. It is certainly a lot different then his other books.

Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
Rating: 2 Stars
This was a sort of strange book written by a British author. It was kind of hard getting through some of those British words and phrases. It was also clearly directed toward a mainly female audience. It was fairly entertaining, though it got somewhat tiresome to read of Bridget's dismal love life, her roller coaster gains and losses in weight, cigarette consumption, alcohol intake, etc. Most women, I assume, would give it 3 or 4 stars, since they would be more able to empathize with Bridget's dilemmas than would most men.

I had previously given up on Koontz, but this book could bring me back to avid fan status. Jimmy Tock and his family are delightfully funny and unique characters! Polar Star by Martin Cruz Smith
Rating: 5 Stars
First published in 1989, I've only just caught up with POLAR STAR. I'm glad now that I have. POLAR STAR features Chief Inspector Renko, doggedly investigating a murder upon the Russian fish factory ship, Polar Star, in the freezing waters off Siberia and Alaska. Martin Cruz Smith has combined just the right amount of detail concerning the tough life aboard this ship, the Russian with American politcs of that era, as well as creating an absorbing mystery. It's also a thriller, with Renko finding himself targeted by the notorius ex-criminal, Arkady, a man hardened by the work camps of Siberia. Not a man to tangle with! Just surviving in the harsh conditions of the ice flows is difficult enough, but Renko vows to follow his investigation, right until the bitter end.

This is much more than a man searching for relics, and Kay finds herself on the trail of a militant conspiracy.

This 2004 novel is a mystery page turner. AMAGANSETT is a Post WWII love story between a commercial fisherman and a debutant. The Alienist by Caleb Carr
Rating: 5 Stars
A thoroughly engrossing murder mystery. Fast paced and gripping, infused with the history of the time period (1896). A time when Theodore Roosevelt was the police commisioner of New York City. And the dicipline of "psychiatry" was just being used to create a psychological profile of murderers. It keeps you on the the edge of your seat, and makes you see New York as it really must have been during the Gilded Age.

Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos
Rating: 4 Stars
First time novelist Marisa de los Santos has written a love story, which tells of love on many levels. Not only is this about the love between a man and a woman, but also between a woman and a child, a mother and her daughter, a grown child and her family, as well as the love of close friends. The story, told in alternating voices, works. It is perfect for a Valentine's Weekend read.

Turning Angel by Greg Iles
Rating: 3 Stars
This follow up to THE QUIET GAME is another taut and suspensful thriller. Iles has many possible suspects in the murder of a popular teen. However, a savvy reader knows early on who the real killer is. Nonetheless, this is worth reading. (After you read THE QUIET GAME, which is better!)

Mad River Road: A Novel by Joy Fielding
Rating: 4 Stars
Fielding does this in many of her books --- she has you going, hook, line and sinker, then in the end, she pulls out all the stops and totally blows you out of the water. In other words, I did not see the ending coming, at all! This is a good one about a mom and her youngster, who leave home and start fresh with new identities. Parallel to that is the con man who is released from prison, on his way to find his ex and their child, and the naive young woman who falls for him and accompanies him on the journey. Hang on!

Linda Troftgruben
Turning Angel: A Novel by Greg Iles
Rating: 4 Stars
Iles will keep you swiftly reading this fast-paced and suspenseful story about a horrific murder of a young woman. Iles brings the South alive again, as in his earlier novel, THE QUIET GAME. In this novel, an attorney must try to determine the truth about his friend's involvement in shocking relationships and even murder.

The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty
Rating: 3 Stars
I got this as an ARC to read and review. It was sort of hard to follow, but it was a good read all the same. "Spinster" Sophie inherits a house from the aunt of her former boyfriend. There is a mystery involved, as the aunt finds an abandoned baby, when she herself is just a child. This reminds me of Rosamund Pilcher and her books.

The Fudge Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke
Rating: 3 Stars
This was a cozy, chatty mystery about Hannah Swensen, a bakery owner who finds the local sheriff dead in a dumpster. Her brother-in-law, who was running against him in an upcoming election, is the prime suspect in the sheriff's murder, and it's up to Hannah to clear his name. I enjoyed the book although it has some major flaws: the editing is poor; the writing tells much more than it shows; and the bakery owner/super sleuth sounds like a woman in her 60s, when she is supposed to be 30! On the plus side, it's got lots of recipes that sound yummy.

The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank
Rating: 3 Stars
Although some parts of this novel were laugh-out-loud funny, I found that I didn't really enjoy this book. It's the story of Jane, a young woman who is making her way to and through the adult world. She's searching for love instead of a boyfriend, a passion instead of a career, and, most of all, she's trying to figure out who she is. The book is hard to describe and hard to rate. Some parts are hilarious, but mostly it's just depressing.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Rating: 4 Stars
A friend loaned this to me, and I am glad I read it. It puts you in mind of SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN, and all the other wonderful books written about eastern culture. I was not really sure what a geisha was (and maybe I am still not certain). Golden's writing is impeccable, and the reader believes he/she is reading actual memoirs. This is worth all the attention it has been getting. I can't wait to see the movie!

Size 12 Is Not Fat: A Heather Wells Mystery by Meg Cabot
Rating: 3 Stars
This is the first book in the "Heather Wells" Series and it was just okay for me. I wouldn't think it was a real mystery, more like a true romance with a possible threat in it. I didn't figure out who did it, but I didn't really care either. Heather keeps telling you over and over how much she loves Cooper. The story probably could have been told in about half the number of pages. I do like her other books, though, so I will probably try PHAT CHICK, which will be out next year.

If I Die in a Combat Zone by Tim O'Brien
Rating: 3 Stars
This was a fairly good book about the Vietnam War --- the terrors, the danger, the frustration and anger of the average grunt. However, it only covers one soldier's perspective, and that from a fairly limited field of operations and a few of his fellow warriors. O'Brien's view is fairly well stated from the beginning. He was on the verge of dodging the draft by fleeing overseas, but didn't have either the courage of conviction to run (and appear cowardly) or to go to war (which he opposed). I thought O'Brien's later book, THE THINGS THEY CARRIED, was much better.

Feeling Awake by Jayne Ann Krentz
Rating: 4 Stars
A romantic suspense about how people used dreaming to solve crime and how one of the extreme dreamers is thought to be a bad person killing people and sometimes what things seem to be is not always correct. I felt she wove a very good tale and I enjoyed the narrator and definitely want to listen or read more by this pen name. The characters had depth and you had a good idea of all the characters. I even was a little surprised by who was doing it.

This book is one more in the series featuring the Swedish detective Kurt Wallender. I have read most of the series and this is one of the better books. The plot is great, but sometimes Mr. Mankell spends too much time on the physical health of his hero. A good read, but a little on the dark side. One gets the impression that Sweden is always cold and dismal, even in the summer.

Son of the Rough South by Karl Fleming
Rating: 5 Stars
SON OF THE ROUGH SOUTH: AN UNCIVIL MEMOIR by Karl Fleming is a remarkable nonfiction book everyone owes it to him/herself to read. I give it an unequivocal five stars. It is about a man raised in a Methodist orphanage in North Carolina, and grew up to be a reporter who covered most of the major events of the Civil Rights movement. Though brought up in an atmosphere of intolerance and racism --- and in the bonds of poverty --- Karl Fleming overcame his past to report on the news of his day with great force and vigor. Included here are the Watts riots and how becomes involved in reporting there in L.A.; he also discusses an incident in which he gets his head bashed over with two-by-fours by rioting blacks, but in spite of this, feels no personal ill will towards them. He covers the assasinations of Robert and John F. Kennedy, Medgar Evers, and Martin Luther King Jr., and the calling out of the National Guards in Mississippi to quell riots by whites when James Meredith sought admission to Ole Miss. The lives and struggles of blacks in the South are vividly portrayed by Mr. Fleming. SON OF THE ROUGH SOUTH is a fascinating read about both the life of a person growing up in our not too distant past, when Jim Crow laws were still very much in practice, and how America was forever changed by the many people who sacrificed their very lives to gain rights that were supposedly promised to all. I had learned about facts and names of people in this extremely important struggle in school, as well as through watching the various stories unfold on the T.V. screens on the nightly newscasts as they occurred in history, but Karl Fleming has a knack for breathing life back into these American heroes and making them live again for a new generation to read about. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Rating: 4 Stars
See the world from inside the head of an autistic teenager. Author Mark Haddon rigorously maintains the character's unique and (for us) bizarre point of view. Fascinating.

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a difficult book to describe. Most of it is about Vietnam and the horrors that O'Brien and his fellow soldiers experienced. It is called a work of fiction, but it seems to be part fiction, part fact, and part fantasy that borders both. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn some of the things experienced by the average grunt who served a tour of duty there.

I started this book while on a plane trip and finished it later at home. It held my attention in both places and I felt it was worth my time. It was well written, as are all her books..

Another great fairy tale retold by a great author. I've always liked Cinderella, and this novel puts a new spin on the old story. I can't wait to read another novel from this author.

This book is very religious, and isn't really my cup of tea. There are no chapters, so it just goes on and on and on and on. I don't recommend reading this.

Fade to Blonde by Max Phillips
Rating: 5 Stars
A hard-boiled detective mystery, and a great satire, redolent of classic pulp fiction. Damsel in distress hires a sometimes private detective to protect her from threatened harm by a sometmes film producer, sometimes mobster. In so doing, the detective uncovers plots and subplots. He uncovers and solves the true mystery in the end. Written in classic noir style --- satiric, exciting, very well plotted..

Indemnity Only by Sara Paretsky
Rating: 5 Stars
The first book in the V. I. Warshawski private eye series. V.I. is hired to find a missing person. She steps into a mystery with plots and subplots that get deeper and more dangerous in this well-plotted story. V. I. is tough, earthy, human, can take and give punches, but has a soft side. Some of the supporting characters and some conversation come across a bit cliche (originally written in 1980 or so), but I still couldn't put it down until V. I. solved the mystery. I highly recommmend this great read.

The Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini

This is the first in a series of books with quilting as the theme. I decided to read it since I just started to quilt. The story was very good and I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Just Rewards by Barbara Taylor Bradford
Rating: 3 Stars
I enjoyed this latest book in the "Emma Harte" series. Ms. Bradford's characters are engaging, the story is lively and keeps your attention, and isn't predictable. I found one aspect of the ending --- a character receiving his "just rewards" --- a bit blunt and sudden, but it was overall more subtle and intriguing. In the Bookreporter email it said something about this being the "conclusion" of the story, but the ending of the book says otherwise. I look forward to the next installment.

The Ambler Warning by Robert Ludlum
Rating: 4 Stars
I'm not usually a Robert Ludlum fan. I find the whole espionage thing a bit out of my interest and often too complicated, but this book really grabbed me. The story was great, the characters interesting, and the story moved at a good pace. The ending was not predictable, which I appreciate. If you haven't liked Ludlum previously, you might still want to take a peek at this book.

Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
Rating: 5 Stars
What a wonderful book. It's amazing how a young boy can have so much determination to get what he so desires. I know something is going to happen to one of the dogs near the end of the book. I guess I should wait to rate this by the number of tissues I use, not stars. I' m just a sucker for animal stories.

Ring by Koji Suzuki
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the English translation of RINGU by the above author. It is the novel that the motion picture "The Ring" was based on. This book is really good. It is a lot different than the movie, but while you're reading it, you feel like you can't put it down. I wasn't sure if I would like it because I didn't like the Japanese film version of "Ringu" as well as the American version. However, this book seems much better than the Japanese movie. No surprise there! The book is always better than the movie!

The President's Assassin by Brian Haig
Rating: 4 Stars
The book was an action-packed thriller! I loved the lead character, Sean Drummond --- cheeky, smart and sexy...what more could you want in a leading man? The only thing that keeps it from 5 stars is that there were some loose ends that you had to make a leap with that I didn't like... other than that, perfecto!

Officer Down by Theresa Schwegel
Rating: 3 Stars
Samantha "Smack" Mack, a chain-smoking, hard-drinking Chicago police officer, and her partner and ex-lover Fred, storm a pitch-dark tenement house. Smack wakes up later with a nasty concussion, but Fred, shot during the attempted arrest, never does. Police officials decree that Smack's "friendly fire" killed Fred, but she's sure there were others in the room with them that night. Smack realizes that the only way to clear her name is to capture the child molester they had gone into the house to arrest, and she will have to do it alone, since all the bureaucracy is against her. Schwegel's sympathetic protagonist and fast-paced action turns out an impressive, gripping first novel.
