Temptress by Lisa Jackson
Rating: 4 Stars
I don't normally read Medieval books, but this one is quite good. It's keeping me up late at night wanting to know who the "Redeemer" is. Very good suspense.

Puppet by Joy Fielding
Rating: 5 Stars
This was read by Laura Hicks and I don't think she did as good a job as other narrators, but that didn't take away from the book. I was worried whether I would like the main character, Amanda, but ended up understanding some of the things she did and why she did them, even if she didn't herself. In my opinion, this was one of Joy Fielding's best books that I have read so far. It had a lot of twists and turns and I certainly didn't expect the outcome at all. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romantic suspense.

A Crack in the Edge of the World by Simon Winchester
Rating: 5 Stars
Simon Winchester is a geologist who can make even the study of the earth's mantle into a mystery that keeps you spellbound. In this book, he visits the mysterious rock formations of Iceland; the site of the earthquake in Savannah, GA; New Madrid in MO to finally reach the Golden Gate in San Francisco for the earthquake of 1906. He has the knack of explaining the world around him in a fashion that draws you into the mysterious places and events that took place millions of years ago, as well as those that occurred during the last century. You may not know much about plate tectonics before you read this book, but he teaches without being tedious, and explains tragedy without pathos. I find him a truly remarkable writer who can write just as well about the formation of the Oxford Dictionary as about the formation of fault lines and lava.

Mercy by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 3 Stars
I guess I've read too many books by Jodi Picoult, because I see a formula here. There is a trial and a love story. However, I must admit that they hold my interest even though I have to get away from them.
Christy
The Thieves of Heaven by Richard Doetsch
Rating: 5 Stars
THIEVES OF HEAVEN is one of the most intense and suspenseful books that I've ever read, but it is so much more than just an action-packed International thriller --- it is about faith, hope, love and forgiveness. Once I began this chilling read, I could not put it down (I read all 448 pages in 2 days). Michael's and Mary's undying love and devotion to one another will be in my mind for a long time to come. (Have a box of tissues handy). Richard Doetsch is definitely at the top of my favorite author list, and in my opinion, this book deserves way more than 5 stars.
This review is from an advance reading copy --- the book will be released on April 25th.

A great coming-of-age story that touched me from beginning to end. This book is a must read for all.
Terry Moody (MoodyTer@aol.com)
Chasing Daylight by Gene O'Kelly
Rating: 5 Stars
At 53, O'Kelly was diagnosed with late stage brain cancer and given three to six months to live. This book tells how O'Kelly put his corporate experience as a successful CEO into planning how his last few months would be lived --- what was important to him at that point in his life and what was not; how and when he wanted to say goodbye to his business cquaintances, friends and family. It makes you wonder how you would handle a "gift" as he had been given to be able to actually plan his last days on earth. This book was well written and very insightful. It really made me think.
Marilyn Shoemaker
The Desert Virgin by Sandra Marton
Rating: 5 Stars
What a marvelous book this was to read. This first book in the "Knight Brothers Trilogy is about Cam Knight, the oldest of the Knight Brothers. I loved his “tough” character role and how his “Salome” blind-sided him with her strength and beauty.
This story is truly a fantasy set in the desert and one you won’t want to miss, especially since it’s a Sandra Marton trilogy.
Marilyn Shoemaker
Stolen by the Sheikh by Trish Morey
Rating: 5 Stars
Pride and anger are such worthless emotions when so much is at stake." - Trish Morey.
I loved this book's excellent storyline. Who I really liked was Sappy (Sapphire), not just her spunk and energy, but her character. Usually the women in "sheikh" books are from the UK or US. Sappy is Australian-born and raised, which made this story very interesting; she's also a fashion designer working in Milan.
Sheikh Khaled is just a wonderful alpha. He's tender, even though revenge is his first priority. He really meets his match in Sappy. The attraction and sexual pull between these two characters was amazing and made for a great romance.
Thanks for the great read, Trish Morey. I can't wait to read Paolo's story, THE MANCINI MARRIAGE BARGAIN.

Wicked Women On Top by Tina Donahue, Jen Nicholas and Jordan Summers
Rating: 4 Stars
"WICKED" WOMEN ON TOP is an anthology of contemporary romances with Tina Donahue's "Let the Games Begin." Jen Nicholas' "Not Another Fairytale" and Jordan Summer's "Private Investigations." All three are fun and lighthearted stories with plenty of action and lots of passion.
Janelle
Predator by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 3 Stars
I always enjoy Patricia Cornwell's "Scarpetta" books. This was a good read. However, I did find the book rather dark. The main characters seem to be hurtling towards a sort of conclusion; a disastrous one if they do not address and resolve the issues that each have been avoiding for some time. I have read the entire series and would like to see some resolving with the characters before the series closes.
Janelle
Cover Her Face by P.D. James
Rating: 4 Stars
P.D. James is a master storyteller. I really enjoyed this book. This is one of the earlier ones, published in 1962. The story and characters are interesting, and I like that the story is told from the point of view of all the characters. It is an Adam Dalgliesh mystery, but you actually don't read alot about him and the majority of the action takes place without him. This is a strong story; well done.

Consent To Kill by Vince Flynn
Rating: 5 Stars
I love the "Mitch Rapp" books by Flynn and this one was every bit as exciting as one could hope.
As with Elizabeth George's last book about Inspector Lynley --- I wonder (and hope) if there will be another book, and if so, what the authors will do with main character.

The Legend of Bagger Vance by Steven Pressfield
Rating: 4 Stars
This book was an enjoyable read but difficult to categorize. It is about a legendary (and ficticious) game of golf in 1931. The main character, Junah, a local war hero and a golfer of renown, is given the task of playing the great Bob Jones and Walter Hagen. His caddy, Bagger Vance, is much more than a caddy. The wisdom and power of Vance reveal that he is eternal and godlike. For anyone who enjoys golf, this book would be a very enjoyable read.

Everybody should read this book, as it describes a time in history that should never be repeated. It's a powerful chronicle of Wiesel's time in a German concentration camp. It is just gripping and quite disturbing.

Any Bitter Thing by Monica Wood
Rating: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this book about a woman who has a near death experience and decides to look back into her past to rediscover herself. A traumatic event from childhood has shaped her and now she must go back and find the truth in order to move forward with her life. The author writes beautifully and portrays real people. I love the way she depicts a marriage in trouble. Great book.

Almost There by Nuala O'Faolain
Rating: 1 Stars
I highly recommend you never read this book unless you want to wallow in the author's self pity. My bookclub read it and out of ten, 2 people kind of liked it. There are too many good books to waste time on a book not worth reading.
Colleen Holt
The Song Reader by Lisa Tucker
Rating: 3 Stars
This novel has a great premise --- a woman who helps people by encouraging them to listen to the songs they're singing (or are running through their heads) to find clues as to what's really bothering them, or what they really want to do about a particular life situation. The characters were well drawn and engaging, and the plot kept me interested. My only problem with it was that some of the plot developments stretched the limits of believability for me. Overall, though, it really was very good.

The Messiah of Morris Avenue by Tony Hendra
Rating: 4 Stars
This novel made me laugh (ruefully, at times), and also made me think about my own spirituality and what I believe. I loved the main character (Jesus, back once again as Jose, to tell us all how we'd mucked up Christianity and had everything pretty much backwards). The radical Christian right will probably not get many laughs out of this, because they're at the receiving end of the barbs and pointed jokes, but that made it all the more enjoyable for me. The book became more serious as it went on, and the big change in tone was a little jarring, but I agreed with and enjoyed reading about the non-judgmental brand of spirituality that Jose and his band of followers espoused.

Man On Fire by A. J. Quinnell
Rating: 3 Stars
I almost threw this book away because of something that happened part of the way through. But if it hadn't happened, there would be no story, or at least a very different one. So, I am continuing on and beginning to like the book again.
Sandra Furlotte
River of Darkness by Rennie Airth
Rating: 3 Stars
This is a throughly enjoyable book, but there are other writers who have done a better job dealing with the aftermath of World War I. Charles Tood comes to mind. I was also unsure if forensics was that far advanced in 1921.

Love and Other Impossible Pursuits by Ayelet Waldman
Rating: 5 Stars
I picked up this book after reading an article in Pages Magazine and I am so glad I did. Excellent book! I can not say enough good about it. I honestly could not put it down. I loved the way she portrayed the characters and the intertwining of relationships. I am not a step mom but felt such sympathy for Emilia, even though I abhor women who destroy marriages. This book opened my eyes to circumstances and how they change lives. I highly recommend this book.

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
Rating: 3 Stars
Even with the controversy surrounding this book, it is still worth taking a look at. How many books have you read that were entirely made up by the author's imagination? Duh...
To base the book solely on other people's feelings of being 'duped' is not doing justice to the fact that it still has what it takes to be considered a 'good read.'

Dead Run by P.J. Tracy
Rating: 4 Stars
This is the third in a series of books by the mother-daughter team who call themselves P.J. Tracy. Monkeewrench founders, Gracie and Annie, along with Deputy Sharon Mueller, stumble upon a deserted town in northern Wisconsin. Not only are all the people dead or missing, but the trio finds that it is now being hunted by the mysterious forces, and they are trapped inside the town. This is a really outlandish plot, but it works as a good, exciting read.

Rating: 4 Stars
A heart-wrenching story of a woman suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. The story goes back and forth between her youth during the Siege of Leningrad and her current life. Scoundrel by Bernard Cornwell
Rating: 4 Stars
Bernard Cornwell never disappoints. SCOUNDREL is one of his thrillers, rather than a part of a series. The book is full of twists and turns and keeps the reader engaged to the very end. Mr. Cornwell's knowledge of boats and the sea is a recurring theme in his books.

Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral by Kris Radish
Rating: 3 Stars
Radish's first book, THE ELEGANT GATHERING OF WHITE SNOWS, is her absolute best. However, readers can always count on being entertained by her well-drawn characters.
This time, several of Annie G. Freeman's friends get together to spread Annie's ashes in some of the places she loved best. They learn a lot about Annie, and even more about themselves. Some of the coincidences are implausible, but hey, this is fiction.
The best part about any book by Radish is how empowered the women are. She writes with a great deal of emotion.

Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah
Rating: 3 Stars
This is not Hannah's best, but it is worth reading. Young "Alice" appears in town, seemingly out of nowhere. She is unable to speak, and is a "wild child."
With the help of two sisters --- one a doctor, one the police chief --- not only do we learn the truth about Alice, but we also come to care very deeply for her.

Sorrow's Anthem by Michael Koryta
Rating: 3 Stars
Koryta's second Lincoln Perry novel is very well-written. This time, Perry and his partner get involved investigating the "accidental" death of one of Perry's childhood friends. There is a maze of lies and intrigue, which almost kills Lincoln and Joe. Of course, reporter Amy "Ace" is involved the entire way. (I hope Koryta gets them together in his future endeavors!)
It is hard to believe how young this Hoosier author is. (His first, TONIGHT I SAID GOODBYE, was written when he was only 21.) He writes with maturity, and has complex characters. I look forward to reading more!

Blue Water by A. Manette Ansay
Rating: 3 Stars
BLUE WATER is a moving novel about life and death, and everything in-between.
Meg and Rex VanDorn's son Evan died in a drunk driving accident. The driver was one of Meg's childhood friends, and the sister of Meg's brother's fiancee.
Meg and Rex quit their jobs, lease their home, and set sail for blue waters. Along the way, they try to make peace with themselves, and each other.
The characters were well-drawn and highly believeable. I cared about all the major players in this work.

In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant
Rating: 5 Stars
Sarah Dunant, author of THE BIRTH OF VENUS, has once again written an outstanding novel. This book is an epic historical novel full of passion, intrigue, and colorful, original characters. The story begins in the year 1527 and takes place in Venice. Dunant does a marvelous job of briniging the history of Venice to life while telling a page-turner of a story. As always, Dunant leaves you hungry for more.

Go Ask Alice by Anonymous
Rating: 4 Stars
I originally picked this book up as it has been listed as a banned book for years, which intrigues me. This is the diary of a 16-year-old girl who is addicted to drugs in the 60's. It makes you wonder if the diary is in fact true, or a writer's take on how drug addiction starts in young adults. It was both harrowing and enlightening, while insuring to make the drug trips awful enough to convince kids to not go that route in life.

Cat's Eyewitness by Rita Mae Brown & Sneaky Pie Brown
Rating: 4 Stars
A fun and uplifting little book, this is a quick read with a lot of mystery and a little romance. The animals in this book understand humans, and talk to each other --- which is really done in a very enjoyable way. It is a PURR-fect little mystery!

Vanish by Tess Gerritsen
Rating: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this mystery. It was not quite as graphic as the others I have read by Gerritson. The book, together with an article in today's newspaper about the different foreign nationalities who are illegally entering from Mexico, does leave one wondering about whether it is all fiction or whether there are women around my community who have been imported as sex slaves.

Rating: 4 Stars

Love and Other Impossible Pursuits by Ayelet Waldman
Rating: 5 Stars
I'm amazed by this novel. A whiny, self-pitying narrator with a self-indulgent lifestyle somehow is a fascinating, witty person to read about. The novel also has a true plot arc that makes the reader root for her, including when she learns a lesson she needs to know --- how to apologize for a change and get on with her life.

Worst Fears Realized by Stuart Woods
Rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this installment of the "Stone Barrington" series. However, Woods could write less of Stone jumping into bed with every female he sees. I sometimes wonder about Dino too, as he never seems to go home for dinner; he's always eating or drinking with Stone. That makes me wonder just a bit. You did meet his wife's father in this one, though, and I don't remember meeting him before. He is certainly interesting, as well as his daughter, who Stone is seeing now. WORST FEARS REALIZED is about a string of murders that is happening to people close to both Dino and Stone. It seems to be tied to a murder they busted someone for when they were partners. Stuart Woods always writes with things that just seem to good to be true. But stil,l I did enjoy this, and the narrator, Richard Ferrone, is great.

SON OF THE ROUGH SOUTH is an excellent book by Karl Fleming. Despite a humble beginning growing up in a North Carolina Methodist orphanage, he became a reporter who covered the major events of the Civil Rights movement, including the assasinations of Megdar Evers, Martin Luther King, Jr., and both John and Robert Kennedy. I've recommended and loaned this book to a few people now, and they all have enjoyed it immensely.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
Rating: 5 Stars
An excellent book! It's nonfiction that reads like fiction. This book documents the legendary Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and truly brings it to life. Learning the new things discovered in that era was fascinating, hearing the problems encountered building a World's Fair was also interesting... but who would have guessed there was also a serial murderer on the rampage?

A Crossword To Die For by Nero Blanc
Rating: 3 Stars
Crossword Queen Belle Graham's father dies on his way to a very rare visit. Was it a heart attack as is first suspected? Or is there more to the death than meets the eye? When her father's personal assistant is killed too, that opens a whole new nest of surprises. Was her father a spy? Was he a Federal agent on the trail of cocaine shipments or is there more coincidence than foul play at work here?
If you are a serious crossword fan, you'll undoubtedly have better luck solving the crosswords that provide clues to the trail that someone wants Belle to follow.
In my opinion, the crossword puzzles in the storyline didn't really interest me all that much, though I like the idea of it. The husband & wife writing team known as Nero Blanc did not develop the characters enough for me to really care about any of them. Belle's almost total detachment of feeling towards her father made me wonder, why is she trying to figure this out? It seems the puzzle was more important than her father.
This was a very nice read, but it won't be staying on my bookshelf. The authors manage to weave together a great number of possible solutions to the mystery and finding out which one the choose to finish the story with with keep you reading.

I picked up this book thinking it was historical fiction, but it was more like erotic trash. I don't know what I expected. But I wanted to read something that was more than a fantasy. It was erotic trash --- the characters had nothing to think about. If you are looking for a no brainer, than this is for you. I liked the idea of Queen Esther, but the whole concept was more fantasy. However, I do have to say that our book club spoke to the author and she had all her biblical facts and interesting research she had done. If she had made the book more realistic and not fantasy, I may have enjoyed it more..

The Stand by Stephen King

The Sisters Mortland by Sally Beauman
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a very complex story of three sisters and three of their male friends. The sisters live in an old English Abbey in the late 60's. The story goes from past to present and slowly reveals all the secrets, lies, and relationships involving these people. A good read.

House of Sleep by Jonathan Coe
Rating: 4 Stars
HOUSE OF SLEEP is a fascinating exploration of relationships among a group of students. They are reunited some twelve years after graduation by their various connections to a private institute for sleep studies, which is housed --- ironically --- in a building formerly owned by the university they attended, and in which several of them had lived. 4-1/2 stars.

Peace Like A River by Leif Enger
Rating: 2 Stars
I recommended this book to my bookclub based on reviews here. I was very disappointed. The actions of older brother Davy, and the Father who worked miracles, were not realistic. And, the poetry writing of the younger sister could not be attributed to a 9 year old.
The writing lacked sufficient clues to actions in the narrative. For instance, I didn't realize that a couple of "miracles" had taken place until they were recalled further into the story.
My bookclub group hasn't met yet, but I hear some really did like it, and others not.

Two Truths and a Lie by Katrina Kittle
Rating: 3 Stars
I am 3/4 the way through this book and expected it to be a lot better. The main character, Dair Canard, is an alcoholic and a habitual liar. As an adult, she finds herself lying at the slightest provocation, with greater and greater finesse. Her biggest lie is one she told her husband when they first met --- a fictitious twin sister who died at the age of ten. I hope to finish this book in the next day or two so I can start a better one!!

I loved this book. It's from the author who wrote FIGHT CLUB, so if you liked that book or movie, you should read this. It's about a guy who goes to restaurants and chokes on his food and gets people to save him. He makes them heroes, so they pay him back by sending him monthly checks to make sure he's doing ok. There's more to it, but that's the premise.

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
Rating: 4 Stars

Ghost Walk by Heather Graham
Rating: 3 Stars
The descriptions of New Orleans and the ghostly legends are very entertaining, but the storyline concerning Nikki DuMonde (a tour guide), two murdered people, a ghost-whisperer part Native American ex-native of New Orleans, and a sundry list of characters is a bit lacking. Still, if you love New Orleans, you'll love the descriptions of the cemetaries and Garden District. Remembering New Orleans as it once was.

Rating: 4 Stars
This is another in the Jesse Stone series. For those of you who like an easy, feel-good mystery with not a lot of thinking involved, this book is for you. Horrific Sufferings of the Mind-Reading Monster by Carl-Johan Vallgren
Rating: 5 Stars
THE HORRIFIC SUFFERINGS OF THE MIND-READING MONSTER HERCULES BAREFOOT is an off-beat gem of literature. It is the sort of book that might come about if Victor Hugo, Mary W. Shelley, and Stephen King were able to collaborate with each other, a book that both is about tragic love and a terrible revenge. Hercules Barefoot, a.k.a., Hercule Barfuss, is born on a stormy cold night to a prostitute in a house of ill repute, and is a victim from birth of massive congenital birth defects. The love of his life, coincidentally, was born the same night in the same place to a different prostitute.
The ability to read, enter into, and control the minds of others is a small consolation for being born a dwarf with a harelip, no ears, and stubby, practically useless arms. Hercules' love for Henriette knows no bounds, and it is the one thing that keeps the little fellow going, despite being persecuted by people in general for his odd appearance, and the Inquistion-driven Catholic Church in particular, for supposedly being a devil or under the control of the devil.
This strange and quirky book is, in a way, like a Romeo and Juliet tale of star-crossed lovers. But, towards the end of the novel, when Hercules can't take any more, his revenge is most terrible, involving getting into the heads of his persecutors and causing them to murder other people quite gruesomely.
People, have we not learned from Carrie that it's not wise to mess with psychics? Apparently not! The subsequent slicing and dicing reminded me of the most famous quote from the movie Saw II: 'Oh, yes -- there WILL be blood.' Yet, despite Hercules' enactment of revenge, his actions seem justified, if very extreme. The folks who are killed have done nasty things and have caused widespread suffering to many people, so it's hard to shed a tear for any of them.
It's a quirky story of tragic love, suffering, and revenge that I found very enjoyable. It is somewhat graphic and may not be suitable for all ages, but it is a very interesting read that sucks you into the characters' lives. The story will stay with its readers for the rest of their lives.

The Bookman's Wake by John Dunning
Rating: 4 Stars
This is the first Dunning mystery I've read. The main character, Cliff Janeway, is a strong ex-cop cum book dealer. The plot is intricate as in Byzantine --- miss one element and you've missed it all. It's Janeway who provides the glue to hold the plot together. I've learned much more about rare books and bookdealing than I could ever have imagined, but if you are to find meaning in this mystery, you have to know the particulars about the central focus of the plot --- book dealing.

Predator by Patricia Cornwell
Rating: 4 Stars
The reviews for this book have not been steller. However, I actually enjoyed it. This is the 14th book from the "Kay Scarpetta" series. Cornwell has taken the 4 familiar characters --- Lucy, Kay, Benton, and Marino --- down a different path. Marino has changed a bit. He is now a biker with tatoos, muscles, leather, and a Harley. Lucy has new difficulties in her life and Benton and Kay, still an item, continue to bicker. The setting for this book takes place in Florida with an occassional visit to Massachusetts where Benton is working on the "Pretator" project. For those die-hard Scarpetta fans, I think this book is worth the read!

Grave Secrets by Kathy Reichs
Rating: 4 Stars
This is the 5th book in the Tempe Brennan series; it has been a while since I read the last one, but I did enjoy it. This time, Tempe goes between Guatemala and Canada, and she is called in by the local police in Guatemala because of a body that was found in a septic tank. She has to identify the bones to let them know if it is one of 4 girls that are missing. I found this to be a very good book, but not one of her best. This time, she meets a new cop who strikes her fancy named Galiano and in the end you are not sure which fellow she leaves on vacation with. Ryan was his charming self, and it wouldn't be a good book without just a little Claudell. I am going to see if I can get the unabridged version of the next one because of all the words I can't pronounce in French, so it will be a smoother read for me. That is my only hang-up with her books.

The Art of Mending by Elizabeth Berg
Rating: 5 Stars
I liked this book a lot because it dealt with two sisters; one sister didn't know that the other sister was being abused by their mom. It is about the healing process that the women go through to be able to move on with life instead of just tread water. It all happens at a very bad time, too, because their father has just passed away. The sister who didn't know doesn't believe at first, but after hearing and remembering, she becomes frightened for her children being around their grandmother. This was a very touching story; I listened to this one and it was read by Joyce Berg, who did a very good job.

In the Company of Liars by David Ellis
Rating: 4 Stars
Admittedly, it took 50 or so pages for me to really get into this mystery/thriller. Once the plot, which parenthetically is written in backwards chronological order, hooked me I had a tough time putting it down. The reverse chronology is no mere gimmick, but rather a plot device that works in this story and adds to the twists and turns of plot. Highly recommended!

If you like the Sidney Sheldon novels of the 80s, then you will definitely enjoy this book. Archer is one of those rare writers who can artfully combine three key elements: amazing storytelling, interesting characters, and colorful descriptions of the cities where the novel takes place. Buy this book along with a cup of your favorite coffee and indulge yourself!

The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
Rating: 5 Stars
THE SPACE BETWEEN US gives an excellent view of the caste system still in effect in modern India. It also presents a view on the generational gap. This novel is very well written, moving, and sad at times, but it's ultimately uplifting about the human will of survival and of the spirit.

Kiss of Evil by Richard Montanari

This is the author's third suspnse novel, and he keeps getting better. KISS OF EVIL is a dark novel that keeps you guessing until the end. The characters are well thought out and very defined. Montanari has a knack to keep you glued to the book.

The Guilty Innocent: Knights of the Darkness by D.N. Simmons
Rating: 5 Stars
When I read DESIRES UNLEASHED, I was amazed by the story as well as the characters. And I found myself hooked on a new series.
As soon as THEGUILTY INNOCENT was released, I couldn't wait to get my own copy. I was extremely curious and anxious to see what this next story was going to offer.
I agree with all of the reviewers thus far. This book was amazing, AMAZING! It's a wild ride, no doubt about it. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!
I also thought it was cool that it was in first-person point of view, I thought that was very creative and it was extremely well done. Not only to you began to understand the main character telling the story, but you get a very in-depth look at all of the other characters and that was pretty awesome. It didn't read like a one-sided type of novel and I loved that!
The characters are completely realistic as they were in the first book and they interacted with each other wonderfully, making the reader fall in love with them even more than before.
If this is your first time reading a D.N. Simmons novel, you're in for a surprise, be prepared to go on the ride of your life! I also recommend that you start from the beginning, though you won't be lost when reading the Guilty Innocent, you'll just get a better undersanding for the characters if you read the first book. And please forgive the errors in the first book, because the story is excellent.

The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella
Rating: 5 Stars
Samantha Sweeting is a rising star in the best law firm in London. Becoming a partner seems inevitable until a huge error on her part turns her world upside down. In a panic to escape her fate she ends up, inadvertantly, taking a job in the country as a housekeeper. The only trouble is, she can't cook or clean; she's never even sewn a button.
I truly enjoyed this story and rarely say I can't put a book down, but it was actually true in this case. Some interesting life lessons are interspersed throughout the book and the characters are likeable enough that they are memorable.
If you want a quick, fun read, check out THE UNDOMESTIC GODDESS!

Desires Unleashed by D.N. Simmons
Rating: 5 Stars
I have a new favorite author! D.N. Simmons has created one of the most imaginative stories I have ever read! The characters were extremely realistic, which was shocking to read with this sort of genre. I'm so used to reading novels with over-the-top characters that appear to be nothing more than "Mary-Sues." Not in this series! These characters jump right at you from the pages as being real. You feel like you're reading a world that can actually exist! They are the farthest thing from one-dimensional.
The sex scenes take you completely by surprise. Not only are they very well written and enticing, they are bold, very bold! I have been looking forever for an author who can create sexy gay, straight, and bisexual supernatural creatures and by god, I've found one! I loved the sex scenes and emotional relationships between the characters. Very well done!
Bite scenes. If you're a vampire fan like me, then you're looking for a novel with juicy bite scenes. Look no further, you've found them in this novel, trust me.
And if you're a shape-shifter lover, this book really does them justice. I really liked reading about their universe --- a world within a world that is written so well that you can easily understand everything.
The action was very fast paced. You're thrust into the action at neck-breaking speed. In the very first chapter, you find out that there has been a gruesome murder and now two hot cops have to track down the murderer. Another thing that I thought was super cool was the police unit. S.U.I.T. short for the Supernatural Unit Investigation Team which specializes in capture criminals of the supernatural element, the two hot cops are a part of the S.U.I.T.s
There is a very good air of mistrust in this novel which is completely believable, so adds to the realism of the story.
The dialogue is witty and hard-hitting. There were a few sections when I had to stop and just pause. The opinions express by the characters are so in-your-face, so provocative, it was great to read such dynamic characterization.
The only problem with the novel happens to be a few grammar and spelling errors. I'm not one of those readers who puts that much emphases on grammar and spelling. This is simply a heads up to those who do.
The story is more than capable of holding your attention and keeping you on edge. I liked the writing style, but some polish is needed, but it doesn't stop this book from being a page-turner. The second novel, The Guilty Innocent was simply amazing!
Overall, A great novel, fun, exciting and sexy as all hell. Highly recommend it!!!

Rating: 5 Stars
See takes us to 19th-century China, where we meet Lily, who is paired up with Snow Flower as somewhat of a guide. They write back and forth to each other in a language that only women can read! This language was made up so that Chinese women could communicate without having men know their thoughts and deeds. Lily and Snow Flower have a deep friendship that includes motherhood and many other aspects of each other's lives....many hurtful. This story gives us pause to see how our lives are often the same as this 19th-century story.

This was a very excellent read. I really did enjoy this book a lot. It's fun, charming, and completely irresistible. I will be reading more of her books. If you don't own a copy of this amazing book, I highly recommend you get one --- you will not regret it.
Description about the book: If there's ever a socialite who needed her comeuppance, it's personal consultant Parris Hammond. Lucky for me, scruffy but sexy marine biologist Bradford Smith is just the man to give it to her. He's already learned the only way to tame this shrew is to kiss her speechless. And now that he's bought a makeover from her, the barbs and sparks are flying. Parris knows this frog is more man than she's ever met...but can he truly be her frog prince?

Rating: 5 Stars
Wow, I loved this book. It is about Bobby Dodge, a Massachusetts State Trooper who is on the SWAT team. His specialty is being a sniper and he is called to a domestic dispute. He sees a man holding a gun on his wife and son, and Bobby decides that the woman and child are at risk, so he kills the man. This has many interesting facets to the story. Did the woman set up this scene so someone would kill her husband, who seemed to be abusing her? Is the woman making her son sick to gain attention? There are just so many things going on in this story, it makes you want to just keep reading and not put it down. I would highly recommend this book. It is read by Anna Fields and she does a marvelous job, in my opinion. I listened to these 9 CD's in two days. I was also very sad to see the story end. It did end in a way I was not expecting too.

Philosophy Made Simple by Robert Hellenga
Rating: 5 Stars
Hellenga's character in this book, Rudy, is reinventing his life. His daughters have moved away and his wife has passed on. This is a situation we all can relate to. Hellenga wants his character to grow and develop. We see him do so with a sense of struggle. This character is warm, friendly, and real. All of us know someone like Rudy or are experiencing that aspect of life right now.
Hellenga is professor emeritus and I can only imagine how exciting his literature classes must have been! I have read all of Hellenga's work and I enjoyed them all. At present, this is my favorite!

This story takes place in 1865. It is historical fiction. An elite group of America's first Dante scholars, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell and J. T. Fields are the only ones that can solve a series of murders that are taking place. The murders coincide with the murders in Dante's INFERNO. This is a real page turner and a look at the country in an era when only the elite class shaped the course of learning and publishing.

Blue Smoke by Nora Roberts
Rating: 5 Stars
This book was read by Joyce Bean and she did a lovely job. I enjoyed this book about an Italian family that lived in Baltimore. The story centers around Katarina --- what happens to her at an early age, and how that shapes the rest of her life. It involves some pretty intense fire scenes, so perhaps I should've read this book instead of listened to, because it was a bit too much a couple of times. One involved a dog, so if you don't like cruelty to animals, there is a scene in this book that is pretty strong. It is in the beginning of the book and you really wouldn't have to read that part to get the rest of the story.
Katarina becomes an arson investigator and you do see some of her cases but the case that is the most prevalent is one that involves her, and it takes a while for her to realize. I don't think you are meant to not know who the arsonist is, but you only have small clues at first. You do see the arsonist's perspective, but not the why until later. I think this is one of Nora Roberts's best books so far. It had a lot of drama and I enjoyed it a great deal, except for the animal abuse. I would highly recommend it.

The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry
Rating: 5 Stars
I keep expecting to pick up a Berry book eventually and be disappointed. So far that hasn't happened. The latest entry is in the style of Dan Brown, but having said that, I think Mr. Berry spins a tale of the ancient Knights Templar in a way that no one else can.
There are twists and turns in this story and you may think you know where it is going, but there is always a surprise thrown in to make you stop and gasp. Books about the Templars and Christianity seem to abound right now, but like the rest of Mr. Berry's books, this one will stay with you for some time. There is a mystery here, some of it true and some of it made up, but the pace is always fast and the story is quite an adventure.

The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 3 Stars
A young girl accuses a boy of rape, but is she who everyone thinks she is? A dark comic writer and solid father wants justice, but is he who everyone thinks he is? A mother who teaches Dante (thus the tenth circle of hell reserved for the worst sinners) and has a secret of her own, is she who everyone believes her to be? Each character is flawed, and it all relates well to Dante, but it seems a bit much when all put together. Not a bad book, but lesser than her other books in comparison.

If I Told You Once by Judy Budnitz
Rating: 3 Stars
A first novel for this author, which begins in Eastern Europe and follows Ilana as she makes her way to America. Most of her experiences seem too fantastic to be true, as though she is in some sort of dream world. We watch as her sons go off to be killed in the 2nd World War and as her daughter struggles for independence from the mother. I am only halfway through the book and it is only persistence that keeps me still reading. This is not a book that I would recommend.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
Rating: 5 Stars
Looking for something with a bite? An edge? Something that titillates and entertains? Something that provokes and challenges?
Then look no further.
This book is stimulating from both an entertainment and a literary perspective. At times, the style is intense and in your face --- urging you to fight. At others, it is more hesitant and staccato --- conjuring indecision and fear. Which style presents depends on which of the main characters is in focus. Either way, you'll find yourself immersed in a tough, dirty world of counterculture values and perverse-utopian ambitions.
The story follows the mental collapse of a troubled young man, fed-up with the work-a-day life that most of us lead. While at his weakest, he meets the charismatic and controlling Tyler Durden, who literally and figuratively takes over his life. What ensues is a roller coaster ride of anarchism, irony, humor and terror that will keep you riveted to your seat. It is difficult to reveal more, as there is a secret that the reader must uncover, and to tell much more might ruin that surprise. Suffice it to say that this is not your run of the mill boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back story.
Going to have to kick something off my Recommend List to make room for this gem. 5 stars for me!

The Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn
Rating: 4 Stars
Remember the last time someone went out of their way for you without expecting any reward? It sure seems like that doesn't happen very often anymore. It seemed like that to the author too. So when one person performs his ordinary job in an extraordinary way, the author was moved and inspired. And if you take this book to heart, it should have the same impact on you.
Don't expect any revolutionary concepts or complex methodologies. The message and call to action are simple and conveyed in an easy and brief manner. The author leads you from inspiration to action. Along the way, the reading is peppered with examples of people acting in a "Fred" like way --- doing more than expected. And there are many tips --- reminders actually, as we should be doing this stuff already --- that will help the converted to adopt a Fred-like attitude/philosophy/lifestyle.
It's easy for me to dismiss most of these cutesy self-help books as short-lived propaganda intended more to sell books than to add value to our lives. But this book, well, it caught me by surprise. I enjoyed it, I related to it, and I was moved and inspired by it. And I recommend it.
