Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
Rainy Day Kisses by Debbie Macomber
Rating: 5 Stars
A well-written, sweet story with just enough romance to keep it fun.

Rebekah Crain (littleminx@cox.net)
The Storm and Other Erotica by Regine Deforges
Rating: 2 Stars
Maybe it lost something in the English translation from its original French, but as far as erotica goes, this was really bad. The collection of 5 short stories went from incredibly disturbing to mediocre to downright stupid. Not one I'd highly recommend, but will pass along to a new reader soon and they can form their own opinions.

Christy
Swept Off Her Feet by Camille Anthony
Rating: 4 Stars
This futuristic erotic/sensual read is full of fun and humor.

Kellie (acountkel@bellsouth.net)
Bahamarama by Bob Morris
Rating: 3 Stars
This month's Mint Hill, NC mystery book club book. It isn't a bad book. I would say it's a pretty good beach read, especially since it takes place in Florida and the Bahamas. This is just OK --- it's got some humor, some interesting info on the islands of the Bahamas, and some suspense. Eh.

Michelle
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig
Rating: 5 Stars
Lauren Willig's book is great and refreshing. She had me laughing by the 10th page. It's a great historical novel and anyone that enjoys historical fiction will enjoy this book!

Annette Procyson (Sesame705@aol.com)
A Darkness More Than Night by Michael Connelly
Rating: 5 Stars
I'm almost at the end of the book --- haven't finished it yet --- but so far, it's a real page turner. Connelly brings together two of his star detectives, Harry Bosch and Terry McCaleb, into an intriguing mystery and charged courtroom drama.

Marsha
Numbered Account by Christopher Reich
Rating: 3 Stars
A Swiss banking financial thriller that is overly involved; but, nevertheless, it holds your interest as a young man searches for the answers to his father's murder and becomes enmeshed in treachery, international smuggling and a horde of other intrigues.

Ruth
Snow Flower & the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Rating: 4 Stars
This was our book club selection for May, but I had been wanting to read it for quite a while. Except for the graphic descriptions of foot binding, I really enjoyed it.

Ruth
We Are All Welcome Here by Elizabeth Berg
Rating: 4 Stars
This is one of my favorite authors. I especially enjoy her books that feature a young girl as the main character as this one did.

Mia (CA)
Widow of the South by Robert Hicks
Rating: 5 Stars
I am enjoying this novel that has such vivid descriptions about the Civil War, the people that were involved, and all those who were affected by their actions.

Christy
Beach Road by James Patterson and Peter De Jonge
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a fast-paced, investigative suspense tale that is totally entertaining with lots of twists and turns. James Patterson, along with Peter De Jonge, has delivered another great read that will keep you turning the pages as quickly as possible.

Julie Hoffstadt (jkm57@yahoo.com)
The Art of Mending by Elizabeth Berg
Rating: 5 Stars
Berg details the pain siblings go through when they are forced to realize their mother is not who they thought she was, but rather was abusive to the younger sister. Berg explores the idea that we never truly know the people we love, and sometimes we willingly ignore what we cannot handle.

Carol
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
Rating: 4 Stars
So hard to put down! Am I the last person on earth to read this book?

Stacy Thompson Schuck
Nothing But the Truth (And a Few White Lies) by Justina Chen Headley
Rating: 5 Stars
This book deftly explores the coming of age of a young Asian-American woman without being trite or stereotypical. It was bright, surprising, and both moved me to tears and made me laugh out loud. I had borrowed it from the library but I'll be buying it so I can read it again and again. This is Chen Headley's first novel. I wait with bated breath for her second.

CC (BREEZYWRITER@AOL.COM)
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
Rating: 4 Stars
This pulitzer prize-winning novel is an unusual and enjoyable read.

Gail
Leonardo's Swans by Karen Essex
Rating: 3 Stars
An interesting historical novel about Italy in the late 1400's. The characters are tied together with Leonardo Da Vinci's persona and life's work. The cover is not appropriate for families of small children and it really didn't have too much to do with the book.

Ruby Davis
The End of Summer by Rosamunde Pilcher
Rating: 3 Stars
I like this book. It's a nice easy read that is good for winding down the day. After living with her father in the United States for many years, Jane returns to Scotland to visit her grandmother and her childhood home. Has she become too Americanized to live in Scotland again? And why did her father insist upon taking her away from Scotland when she was young?

Nunu In Niagara
A Blade of Grass by Lewis DeSoto
Rating: 5 Stars
This book is set on the border between South Africa and untamed land. It is a beautifully written story of a young white woman and a black woman struggling to survive during the Boer War. They endure struggles and heartaches and become friends, only to fight for their lives. This book is a must read.

Sandra F.
Ghosts in the Snow by Tamara Siler Jones

This book is Jones's first novel and is a combination of fantasy and CSI investigative techniques. It's a great story and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Christy

Kellie (acountkel@bellsouth.net)
Girl With the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
Rating: 4 Stars
What an interesting book. This is not a genre I normally read, but maybe I should read more, because I really liked this. It's the story of a young girl who becomes a maid for the painter Vermeer and his family after her father "loses his trade." Greit is a hard worker and a strong girl who is trying to make the best of her circumstances. Vermeer notices something about her --- she has an eye for art. He asks her to help him start mixing paints in his workshop, which is a very honorable task since not even his wife is allowed in his painting room. The turn of events is triggered by "the master" asking Greit to sit for him so he can paint her, and the kicker is when he asks her to wear his wife's earrings. The ending of this book is magnificent, one of the best I have ever read. For those of you who have never read this one, it is definitely worth the time.

Linda M., Three Oaks, MI
Eventide by Kent Haruf
Rating: 5 Stars
A wonderful story about love, loyalty, loneliness, and hope sent against the high Plains of Colorado. A beautifully-written story that was very hard to put down.

Thomas (tomjac0850@charter.net)
Back Roads by Tawni O'Dell
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a very readable story of 19-year-old Harley Altmyer, who has the been thrust into the difficult position of breadwinner and caregiver to his three younger sisters after his mother is sent to prison for killing their father. Harley must work two full-time jobs, keep his loose-moraled oldest sister in line, deal with confused feelings about his mother, and try to handle his lust toward the sexy mother of his youngest sister's best friend.

Rating: 5 Stars
A terrific mystery staged around a very controversial topic. As with all good mysteries, the author kept the reader in suspense till the end.

Kathy Kasten (kkasten911@yahoo.com)
S is for Silence by Sue Grafton
Rating: 4 Stars
This was a very good story, however, it sometimes was hard to remember who was whom with all the characters that were in it. But, I liked it a lot.

Samantha Campen
Sleeping with Schubert by Bonnie Marson
Rating: 5 Stars
A woman goes shopping at Nordstrom's and comes home with the spirit of Franz Schubert inside her. What a concept! This book grabbed me on the first page and kept me riveted to the end. Will they finish the Unfinished Symphony? What will become of the Franz??

I loved the blend of mystery and humor, and the characters jumped off the pages and into my heart. The book's in paperback now, so I'm recommending it to my book group.

Judy (joswood@msn.com)
Cage of Stars by Jacquelyn Mitchard
Rating: 4 Stars
Scott Early murdered Tessa's two little sisters, and he eventually gets out of incarceration after only a few short years. The murder has nearly destroyed her family and Tessa cannot forgive him as her parents have done. Four years later, Tessa goes looking for him. When she finds him, the real suspense begins. An enjoyable, but sad book.

Annette
The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 5 Stars
Another great novel by Jodi. I found it hard to put down. I recommend reading all of her books.

Howard Lichtig
Excavation by James Rollins
Rating: 4 Stars
Upon finishing this, I will have read all of his books except for MAP OF BONES (ordered, awaiting delivery); the books have similarities, but are great adventures: all involve some form of underground (or underwater) exploration, fearsome creatures, heroes seeming to reach the end of the road but somehow gaining triumphant freedom, love interest, and interesting (far flung) science. I have enjoyed them all so far.

Linda Smith
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Rating: 5 Stars
This book tells the story about a secret language Chinese women created to share the hardships and the joys of their lives, through two particular women and their families. This book will keep you up reading late into the night. You'll then want to pass it on to every woman you know so that you can discuss its elements.

Promise Me by Harlen Coben
Rating: 5 Stars
Myron is finally back, with all his charm and wit. I have really missed the cast of characters in this series. As always, a fun read and a great mystery. I highly recommend this series .....this book can stand alone but I gaurentee that you will be buying all that came before.

Jen
A Necessary Evil by Alex Kava
Rating: 5 Stars
A thriller page turner. I just love them.

Jodi
Chasing Destiny by Eric Jerome Dickey
Rating: 2 Stars
A disappointment for anyone who's read other EJD books. I couldn't even finish this one, it was almost as if he wrote it trying to impress the reader w/ smut, bad language, ghetto lingo and nasty characters. I hope this isn't where his writing is headed, all his other books were good.

T. Thomas
Echoes of Honor by David Weber
Rating: 3 Stars
A slow-moving, but necessary read if you are reading the entire series.

Rating: 5 Stars
This is a perfect book for pianists, music lovers, and those who can't read enough about France. An American living in Paris walks his two young students to school and is curious about a piano shop. After many visits to the shop, he finds out that in order to purchase a used piano, he must acquire a proper introduction. Annette
Full of Grace by Dorothea Benton Frank
Rating: 3 Stars
This is a story about family, faith, and love. I am sure everyone else will love it, but I found it hard to finish. My family has gone through the experience. The ending was unbelievable to me.

Marlie Warren (justme@xmission.com)
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
Rating: 5 Stars
I've never been a reader of mysteries and didn't plan on reading this one, but my reading group picked it and now i'm GLAD we did! I LOVE this book; Dan Brown is a master at telling the story! The only time I really get time to read is when I climb into bed and if I could stay awake while reading it, i'd have been finished long ago! I want to know what happens, but at the same time I am savoring every page... I don't want it to end --- it's TOO GOOD!

Philosophy Made Simple by Robert Hellenga
Rating: 5 Stars
The author is a college professor whom I have heard read one of his previous books. He understands the ages and stages of people so well. I really enjoy the character in this book, Rudy, who has three daughters and is a widower. He starts a new life in the most bizarre of situations and seems to make it work. It is a well-written book that has a great underlying sense of magic to it.

Marilyn Shoemaker
The Married Mistress by Kate Walker
Rating: 5 Stars
BRAVO, Kate Walker! THE MARRIED MISTRESS was a passionate and intense love story, one I shall remember for a longtime. This story of Damon and Sarah gripped my heart like no other. Each chapter is so compelling, I couldn't put it down. Again, BRAVO! Its amazing how one little statement from a father can ruin a marriage! Damon's father had one thing in mind, to get some land for his hotels and marry his son off to a friend's daughter. Little did he know that his son while bargaining for this land would fall in-love and marry the lovely Sarah in secret. However, when Damon's father plants in seed in Sarah's mind that Damon has always wanted to marry Eugenia, Sarah leaves Greece and heads for London.

Six months later, Damon is still tormented by his feelings for his wife and goes to London to convince her to return home with him. What he finds when he gets there is explosive. From that moment on, I was trapped and had to read it from beginning to end.

This is such a powerful and explosive love story. Just wonderful, one I'll read over and over again.

Manhunt: The 12-day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson
Rating: 5 Stars
A thrilling, fascinating, factual account of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth. I learned so much I never knew about Lincoln's killer, the people involved in his escape, and his pursuit. More exciting than fiction.

Helen
The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
Rating: 4 Stars
A compelling story. Joan Didion writes a memoir of grief, which chronciles the first year after her husband dies suddenly of a heart attack and her only child Quintana suffers a devastating illness...

M. L. Miller, Black Mountain, NC
The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
Rating: 4 Stars
This novel describes the relationship between two women: Sera, a middle-class woman, and her servant of over 20 years, Bhima. These two women know each other better than any of their relatives, yet their differences in social class keep them from being true best friends. One thing I liked about this book is that the reader is left speculating about what happens after the end of the book. My mind created two outcomes: one based on foreshadowing in the book, the other an ideal world outcome. It takes place in Bombay, India.

Dani
The Second Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares
Rating: 5 Stars
As an adult, I still love this series. I am listening to the audiobook in my car and it keeps me happy while I drive.

Kendra
House by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti
Rating: 1 Stars
This book had a great premise, but didn't follow through with the story. The suspense wasn't good and I kept getting tired of the characters stopping and realizing they had no idea what was going on or how to escape. I wasnt' that scared and I was pretty confused. The ending had a twist, but it wasn't a believable or understandable twist to me, just a "we have to end the book now" kind of twist. Basically I was very disappointed by this book and I will probably think twice before buying anything more by these authors.

Marilyn Shoemaker
The Antonides Marriage Deal by Anne McAllister
Rating: 5 Stars
I just finished reading THE ANTONIDES MARRIAGE DEAL and really liked it. It reminded me of a Kathryn Hepburn and Spencer Tracy movie --- the bantering, power struggle, and sexual tension. I'm hopeful Anne will continue on with the characters --- there are so many good stories between these two Greek families

Both of the author's characters are strong and come from a strong and large Greek family. Elias Antonides is the head of the family business and always taking care of his family and siblings. Tallie Savas is the only one in her family with the desire to become involved in the family business. Both Greek fathers' wager --- Elias's father loses and Tallie is installed as the President of Antonides Marine. Tension and sparks fly, and their romantic dance begins.

The 6th Lamentation by William Brodrick
Rating: 5 Stars
A claim of sanctuary is made on the Church in the 1990s, by a suspected Nazi war criminal. At the same time, an old woman is dying, but reveals to her granddaughter what had made her so remote with her family --- her years in occupied Paris and work helping Jewish children escape. All this weaves into a story that is fascinating, as it takes you from World War II to the 1990s. There are many turns, some very complex moral questions, and wonderful characterizations. It was a wonderful find; one that had me mesmerized!

Marilyn Shoemaker
His Royal Love-Child by Lucy Monroe
Rating: 5 Stars
If you read Lucy Monroe's WEDDING VOW OF REVENGE, you were first introduced to Danette Michaels (Tara's friend and co-worker). Danette falls under the spell of Ray, who uses their relationship to further his career. He betrays Danette and Tara by taking photos in hopes of furthering his career as a reporter.

Danette accepts an offer from Angelo, her former employer, to move to Italy and goes to work at Scorsolini Shipping. She falls in love with the owner; Prince Marcello Scorsolini has a secret affair and becomes pregnant. Danette is tired of their relationship being a secret and wants them to go public. Marcello, on the other hand, wants secrecy so that his lover won't be hurt by the press. He knows firsthand what the press can do... The press published his sterility during his first marriage all over the tabloids. When he finds out that Danette is pregnant with his child he is ecstatic and wants marry immediately. From that moment on, Danette is unsure of their relationship, everything is moving too fast and she wants LOVE from him and doesn't feel she can have it as Marcello still lives and mourns the loss of his first wife. Theirs is a turbulent love story and a sweet ending.

What I found so amazing about this particular book was how the author used two medical issues, sterility and a genetic spinal deformity and created such an incredibly sweet love story. This author uses these two factors plus their uncertainty of each other and what they both define as love and weaves wonderful tale.

I loved Danette's spunk and "zippy" personality. I also felt her pain when she thought Marcello only wanted to marry her because of the baby. This couple learns many lessons about love. They both learn "love shouldn't be selfish and it shouldn't hold back out of self-protection. Love shouldn't make a woman a doormat, but it should make her strong enough to take risks she wouldn't otherwise take."

Monroe's alpha male Marcello Scorsolini is proud and passionate and will take your breath away. She also incorporates the other family members into this storyline, the King, his ex-wife. Marcello's mother Flavia, plus his two brother's and their wives. This book only sparks the reader's interest to "crave" more. I can't wait for Claudio and Therese's story in the next book in the series.

Again, Lucy Monroe has written not just an incredible book and an incredible series for her readers and fans.

Kathleen Josephson
Angel Falls by Kristin Hannah
Rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this sweet story, set in western Washington. Michaela Campbell is injured and falls into a coma. The subsequent effect that it has on the family, husband Liam, and the two children made me get a lump in my throat and my eyes fill up with tears. The characters were for the most part, very real.

Heather Gill
Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark
Rating: 5 Stars
A very scary novel that reminds mothers not to let their guards down with their children; there is always some predator waiting to strike when they get a chance, and this one did! I really enjoyed this novel and it is up there as one of Mary Higgins Clark's best!

The Sinner by Tess Gerritsen
Rating: 5 Stars
WOW!!! I just love this author. Detective Rizzoli and Dr. Isles are called to a convent because a nun is missing. They end up finding her dead. What happened? After completing the autopsy, Dr. Isles discovers that this women has bore a child. Where is the child? Detective Rizzoli being the tough detective that she is, faints during an autopsy. Is the job getting to her or is something else going on? Read the book to find out why. I love all of Tess's books but I have to say THE SINNER and GRAVITY are, by far, my favorite.

Deadly Double by Adrianne Byrd
Rating: 5 Stars
Wow, this book kept me on my toes... I was running through the woods with Josephine as she tried to re-claim her life from her long-lost twin sister. If you like suspense and romance, then you'll love this book --- it's one of Byrd's best yet....

The Tender Bar: A Memoir by J.R. Moehringer
Rating: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this memoir because the author is funny and intelligent. The bar in the title is Publicans in Manhasset, NY. Publicans was like a home to the author as he grew up fatherless. The characters are interesting and believable.

The Natural History of Uncas Metcalfe by Betsey Osborne
Rating: 5 Stars
A wonderful first novel about an absent-minded professor living in a small town in upstate New York.

Uncas Metcalfe is man who keeps his feelings to himself. When a accident causes his wife to become bedridden for a time, Uncas finds his buffer to the world gone and he is lost. His daughter moves back home with her husband and three children, and he cannot comprehend her hostility toward him. He meets a young woman named Alex who encourages him to open up and he remembers a painful incident from the past. He also is being stalked by a man whom he unknowingly has wronged in some way.

Osborne really gets inside the head of this 65-year-old man and we learn how keeping feelings hidden can seriously harm a marriage.

This is a terrific novel and I hope to read more in the future by this author. I highly recommend it.

Naked In His Arms by Sandra Marton
Rating: 5 Stars
This is the final book in the "Knight Brothers" series and is so hot, sensual and steamy; you won't be able to put it down.

Alexander Knight is the youngest Knight brother and an ex-special forces agent who is hired to protect the beautiful and lovely Cara Prescott. The "Agency" wants to hire Alex to keep Cara safe so that she can testify against a former employer whom they want to put in prison, with Cara being the only witness. Cara has refused to testify or go into the witness protection program, so Alex makes plans to not only protect her but kidnap her and take her to his private island.

Upon their first encounter, which is "highly charged" they are attracted to each other, confused, mistrusting, and wary but let me tell you I couldn't even get to Chapter 5 without my heart racing. Both of these characters are extremely proud, stubborn, intelligent, and their sexual attraction is "sizzling" to say the least. Their love story is truly an adventure full of love, lies, secrets and suspense.

For me, this final book was my personal favorite but I can't begin to tell you what an incredible series Sandra Marton has written. All three books, THE DESSERT VIRGIN, CAPTIVE IN HIS BED, and this sensational book, NAKED IN HIS ARMS are just another example of Sandra's talents in telling a story --- one her readers will not forget.

The Kite Runner by Klaled Hosseini

This book reminded me of A FINE BALANCE, although this book was not as depressing. This is a vivid look at war and hostility, but with a glimmer of human intervention, as well as a reminder that we are only human and constantly err.

Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs

I only read this book because it was for my Book Club. I couldn't put it down. It was a memoir of the ultimate dysfunctional family. Young gay boy is givven up by his selfish, crazy mom to live with her even crazier, bizarre psychiatrist and his wierd family. It was an extremely sad story told in a humorous way.

Lilly Rose Cleary is a 30-ish single female lawyer in Sarasota, Florida who works with a law firm full of characters from Carl Hiassen, Tim Dorsey, S.V. Date, and Elmore Leonard; except that these characters are believable... you've probably met a few. This is a very quick read (you can't put it down). This is a murder mystery that includes a deformed baby trial, divorces and hookups, ecology nuts, animal lovers, paranoid vegetarians, and the best thing is the title is a great double pun that you won't get 'til you figure out who done it. I'm really looking forward to reading more from this author.

Anyone who has any issues with their dog should read this book, as well as anyone who loves dogs or has ever had a dog or knows someone who has a dog. Everyone should at least know the proper way to meet a dog.

The Firefly Cloak by Sheri Reynolds
Rating: 3 Stars
Tessa Lee and her brother, Travis, are abandoned by her mother and her mother's boyfriend when she is 7 years old. She and Travis are wrapped in her mother's cloak, which is decorated with fireflies. The two children go to live with their grandparents. One day, when she is a teen, Tessa Lee takes off to a town 2 hours away to try to find her mother. She succeeds, but the meeting is very unsatisfactory for both women. Throughout the book we learn more about Grandmother Lil and Mother Sheila. I liked THE FIREFLY CLOAK, but I just felt like something was missing when I finished it. It's worth the read though, and you can finish it in a day.

The Camel Club by David Baldacci

This is a pretty good book. Baldacci did a great job pulling current events into a fiction story. This is about a club in Washington DC that searches for the truth. They just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and witness a murder. Meanwhile, there is an articulate plan being developed that could change the US and the world forever. THE CAMEL CLUB was very entertaining and suspenseful, and it kept me at the edge of my seat till the end.

We Are All Welcome Here by Elizabeth Berg
Rating: 4 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved how strong the mother was, and the dynamic between her and her daughter. I met Elizabeth Berg and she told us about the letter sent to her by a fan asking her to write a non-fiction story about her mother. She said she didn't write that kind of non-fiction story but was given permission to base a story on the fan's mother. I enjoy Elizabeth Berg's writing and I believe she captured this character very well.

The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry
Rating: 4 Stars
Another DA VINCI CODE-like book that is well written and exciting. Once again, the church is trying to find and then hide some important information known as the "Great Devise." There is a good deal of historical fact mixed in with a good mystery and a dash of relationship intrigue added. If there were not so many books with themes about lost gospels, hidden secrets, etc...this may have gotten a full 5 stars.

Judy (AZ)
The Doctor's Daughter by Hilma Wolitzer
Rating: 5 Stars
A wonderful story about a "book doctor" who has a feeling that something is wrong. Is it the thickening she feels in her breast? Is it her brilliant father's (the doctor) losing his battle with Alzheimer's? Is it her flatlining marriage, or perhaps something with her shifty son? This is a story of discovering who she is while dealing with the past.

Samantha Campen
Derailed by James Siegel
Rating: 4 Stars
This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I actually got crabby at work simply because I was kept away from reading it. It's about a family man making one wrong decision and having it spiral out of control. It raises the question of "How far would you go to cover up a lie? Would it eat you alive or could you sleep at night knowing what you know?" Amazing. And FYI, the movie doesn't do the book justice, not by a mile.

Marley & Me by John Grogan
Rating: 5 Stars
There is a reason this has been on the bestseller list for weeks and weeks. Not only is it a book about the author's crazy dog who you just can't help but love, but it's about family and loving people for who they are and not who you want them to be. You will laugh and cry outloud. I had the priviledge of going to a book reading/signing when he was in Evanston, IL a few weeks ago, and it was amazing. His love and passion for Marley were obvious. He's also working on a children's book called BAD DOG MARLEY! I can't wait!

Printed in 2003, it still is an excellant read. I loved the way each girl was followed --- why she chose to become a nun, what appened during that time, why and what happened to her afterwards. A lot of research had to have gone into this novel. I highly recommend it for many reasons: women, choices, changes in the world vs. religion, and just good reading.

A very thought-provoking novel. It was a little slow at the onset, but then you won't want to put it down. Always an interesting topic especially with the events and diseases today. A must read for any adult.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is truly one of the best books ever written. It will remain a classic throughout time and will never lose its heart-hitting feeling that you get when you read it. This book was so great! I love this author, and I think this third book of the series was the best. It definitely beat the second one! In this book, Rex almost turns into a full darkling. Something very awkward happens to Jessica Day that was quite surprising. The book keeps you at the edge of your seat. There is a race against time to save Bixby and near cities or else all will be sucked up and never come back...

Gerry (GerryD8784@aol.com)
Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark
Rating: 1 Stars
Twin three-year-old girls are kidnapped from a babysitter's care in their home, and a multi-million dollar ransom is demanded for their return. Clark included too many flat, undefined characters thrown in as red herrings, and by the end, I really didn't care who was guilty or what motivated the kidnapper.

Gerry (GerryD87854@aol.com)
Abide with Me by Elizabeth Strout
Rating: 3 Stars
A lyrical novel about a young minister assigned to a rural parish in the late 1950's, and his struggles following his wife's death --- including having to care for two small daughters, as well as his congregation. The novel was slow in spots, but beautifully drawn together at the end.

Gerry (GerryD8784@aol.com)
The Last Friend by Tahar Ben Jelloun
Rating: 4 Stars
Translated from the original French, this short novel tells the tale of a lifelong friendship between two Moroccan men, a friendship that ended abruptly when one accused the other of betrayal. In its spare prose is also an interesting and informative depiction of a country and culture little-known to most Americans.

The Birdcage by Marcia Willett
Rating: 4 Stars
This is a lot like Rosamund Pilcher's books. It takes place in Great Britain, spans several generations, etc. It's good, but is not as enthralling as Rosamund Pilcher. I can put it down and walk away and come back later, unable to do that with Pilcher.

The Amalgamation Polka by Stephen Wright
Rating: 4 Stars
It doesn't have anything to do with the dance, but is instead a lively language of Civil War tale... Author Stephen Wright has been idle from the writing scene for ten years, and THE AMALGAMATION POLKA is his fourth novel, recently released. Many peers have accorded literary kudos to Wright, all of which is well-deserved attention. Wright's eerie style resembles TV's old 'Twilight Zone' serials. The author's style wends its way in a fashion that the leads the reader to anxiously forge ahead to find out the outcome, and then want more.

The setting is the Civil War era in the pre-consolidated America, and the abolitionist Fish family. Roxana Fish marries Thatcher of Saratoga Springs, NY, and having come from South Carolina slave owners, Roxana witnessed vicious beatings. She develops an intense outrage of injustice, pressing her family about the latter... she is told, 'a proper woman of the South doesn't act that way....'. Thatcher is committed to ending slavery, and recklessly leads Roxana to run away under secrecy, and marry. Their home is opened to the Underground Railroad. Parenting a child named Liberty, they are sure the child will grow to fight for the Union. War begins developing into battlefield losses and enmity.

As in his prior Wright's novels, and with his gift of language, he transposes defined characters and time period dialog, and the reader travels forward, following the powerful pen of the author. With an average plot, added humor at times overly injected, Wright's mastery of language holds on to the reading audience.

Recommendations: WIDOW OF THE SOUTH, also Jeff Shaara (Michael Shaara) Civil War Trilogy is superb.

Rating: 5 Stars
An incredibly HONEST diary. "Alice" is frank and one can see how she gets herself into something she can't get out of easily... this is only one true account of the many teenagers who have lost themselves in drugs for the past many, many years. Read it and be shocked.

She Drives Me Crazy by Leslie Kelly
Rating: 5 Stars
If there was a rating of 10 on here. I would rate this book a 10.

SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY is as hilarious as I've come to look forward to in Leslie's books and has a nice twist I didn't expect at the end. The scene in chapter one at the local convenience store involving a sprained ankle and laundry detergent had me laughing. Leslie Kelly simply rocks! And so does SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY.

You're in for a treat when you read this.

The Wild Girl by Jim Fergus
Rating: 4 Stars
After reading ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN, I found this book fascinating but not quite as good as the first one. However, my local library purchased this book, and not ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN. I would not have heard of this author if not for Word of Mouth. I admire the research he does for each book, and his character development is outstanding.

Disney War by James B. Stewart

Kathleen Josephson
Being Dead by Jim Crace
Rating: 2 Stars
I did not enjoy this book. It begins with the main characters getting murdered. We have a few flash backs of their life together, but for the most part, it was a description of their bodies decomposing out on the sand dunes. I thought that the picture of the beetles and crabs crawling over them and the birds pecking was a bit more information than I wanted.

L. Hann
Gravity by Tess Gerritsen
Rating: 5 Stars
Awesome! This book is excellent. I can't even begin to describe it. I love mystery and I love space missions/NASA, and this is about both. I dont' know how Gerritsen thought of this one, but it is great! A must read, very suspensiful.

Maureen
The Madonnas of Leningrad by Debra Dean

Bianchi
Library of the Soul by Simon Buck
Rating: 5 Stars
This is a surprisingly good debut novel. A 'crime/mystery' story, first in a planned series with the same hero, it is believable yet a sufficiently out-of-the-ordinary experience for most of us to also be exciting. I read this because a friend recommended it, who said it was un-put-downable (!). I agree. I read it in just two sittings, much to the irritation of my family --- but they have now read it too and agree. The fact that one of the characters shares a name with us was also appealling ;-) If you like mysteries with twists and turns, plenty of different interweaving plotlines, and a resolution that surprises yet still satisfies you, then you should try reading this. I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Loretta Sanford

The War of the Worlds Murder by Max Allan Collins
Rating: 4 Stars
Max Collins has a true gift of creating an interesting plot and intertwining it with a factual account of the War of the Worlds 1938 program. He puts into perspective the mindset of people in 1938, to make us understand how people truly believed Martians were invading earth. The story is so well crafted that it is difficult at times to determine what's true or not.

Rating: 4 Stars
An oldie but goodie from Picoult, whose popularity has risen since this work was released in 2003. This is the story of a prosecuting attorney who finds herself on the other side of a courtroom when she is charged with a crime prompted by revenge. Picoult is particularly clever at storytelling from many angles, adeptly working at the story from all sides.

The Good Wife by Stewart O'Nan
Rating: 5 Stars
Patty Dickinson's tale of how she manages to keep her life together after her husband goes to prison may sound like movie-of-the-week fodder, but it's much more rich and compelling than that. O'Nan's matter-of-fact tone keeps the story realistic and touching all at once.

Arthur and George by Julian Barnes
Rating: 5 Stars
Excellent, well-written fiction book centering on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This book really gives a great overall view of his life, yet it is written as a novel. Very little is mentioned about his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, and that is quite all right. The story is wonderfully told.

The Tomb of the Golden Bird by Elizabeth Peters
Rating: 4 Stars
The very well-written newest addition to the Amelia Peabody mystery series. Although there is not much mystery in this book, the family dynamics of the Emerson clan is very well presented. Rumors say that this will be the last book in the series. It's hard to say from the ending, but things do get wrapped up nicely. I hope Elizabeth has a couple more entries in this series.

Nightlife by Thomas Perry
Rating: 5 Stars
A tale of two women, although at times it seems there are dozens. Technically, Charlene Buckner is not a classic serial killer because she totally changes her persona after each murder. Yes, as a child she had a slutty mom, and yes, she was abandoned in her late teens, but her life story is hardly the horror show of most fictional serial killers. On the other side, Portland police detective Sgt. Catherine Hobbes has issues of her own to deal with as she follows Charlene et al from Portland to San Francisco, L.A., Las Vegas and other locales, where she pauses just long enough to commit another murder. By the end, the two women have grown close not only in proximity but in identity as well. One of Perry's best to date.

The Pact: A Love Story by Jodi Picoult
Rating: 5 Stars
I thought that the way the author lays the story out for the reader is genius. She pulls the past together with the present, and makes the story complete by telling the lives of these two lovers from the day they are born to present day. I thought that it was brilliantly written. I recommend it to all of my friends, it definitely fits the cliche of a "must read!"
